The amazing John 5 joined Hard Rock historian Jeff Nolan for a deep dive into guitar nerditry. In this video, he plays Jimi Hendrix’s SG Custom, Brian Jones’s iconic Vox Mk. III “Teardrop”, Paul Kossoff’s ’57 Les Paul Jr., Paul Stanley’s Ibanez Iceman, the ’58 Les Paul from the cover of the Stones’ live classic ‘Get You Ya Ya’s Out’, Jason Becker’s Peavey “Numbers” guitar, Duane Allman’s Telecaster (the one he used on Wilson Pickett’s “Hey Jude”) and John’s own 1967 Telecaster Custom. This one was a labor of love. Hope you enjoy it.
FOR GUITAR NERDS ONLY: The gear used was a Valvetrain 416 head and 1x12 cabinet (www.valvetrainamps.com/). When you hear a gain pedal, it’s an Analogman Beano Boost (www.analogman.com/beano.htm) . An Origin Effects Cali76 compressor was used at its most subtle setting to even things out for the recording. We used a Shure SM57 straight into the camera input.
All the instruments were professionally teched by master luthier Kip Elder of Starr Guitars (starrguitars.myshopify.com/)

@Peter Lustig Yeah, I'm sure Rob Halford had so few people wanting to play in his band he had to settle for a shitty pop punk guitarist. I used to not be real impressed because I'd only heard him in Manson's and Zombie's stuff, which isn't exactly known for its shredding guitar work. But watch his solo stuff. He can throw down like a monster when he wants to.

It's having a proclivity towards music, some people can just grab one and it's natural, given the fact that he has played at the grand 'ol oprey and done numerous tracks for so many different artists and is payed to play and practice it's not surprising that he can remember all of those riffs from memory, he's probably played them a thousand times and has favorites from his childhood. He is a true savant with music to be honest.

To a large degree- a guitar is a guitar man- you don't need to play them to get used to them or anything like that. They're standardized enough that unless it's an odd ball like a fretless or a 7 string or something like that- you can just pick it up and play really. And if you're playing quality instruments like these- you can bet they're going to be super easy to play- they play so effortlessly and with such beautiful tone it actually requires less skill and talent to make it sound good.

When he comes back to the Detroit area, he is just like everyone else, he hangs out with his old friends and goes to the mall. I was at a Rob Zombie show a few years ago, and a girl sitting next to me showed me her phone form earlier in the day. He played at DTE Music Theater, and there is a huge mall about 10 minutes away. The girl at the concert worked one of those kiosks, selling some sort or trinkets or something. Anyway, she recognized him and waved him over to her booth and chatted with him for a quite a while. He took a bunch of pictures with her and she said that he hung out with her, helping to sell her stuff from the kiosk to anyone who walked by. lol He is a very down to earth and humble guy, which I guess is why he has a rabid fan base, and is in such high demand as session player. Man the kiss guitar was so perfect sounding you could tell with the Seymour Duncan pickup and the action and straightness and flatness of the neck you could hear in its sound when he was doing those quiet passages on it. I was the Maintenance engineer at the NY Hard Rock back in the '90's when it was on 57th street. One of our jobs was to take care of the guitars; they were definitely not as well cared for or curated back then as they are now. The Brian Jones guitar just hung on a column next to the main staircase where it had been since 1984; it wasn't in a protective case or anything, just attached to the wall on a wooden mounting bracket that we made, exposed to the elements like food grease and cigarette smoke; no climate control, the cleaning crew would wipe it down with God knows what at night. It wasn't in good shape when I started working there, so one day I took down and brought it home in a case on the subway and the next morning I brought over to St. Marks guitars for a once over and a proper setup. I'll never forget the look on the tech's face when he opened the case and saw what was in it. When I got it back, we put it inside of a glass case for better protection. I'm glad to see the Hard Rock takes better care of its collection now.

He's not just solely a 'Rock', 'Metal', 'Industrial' musician. He knows the whole 'Sphere' The '50's stuff, the Jazzy riffs, on and on. Back in the 'Day'? Guitarists were expected to know How To Play Their Instruments. Vocalists were Expected to Know How To Sing, etc. He's not working with just 1 'Bag O' Tricks'.
