In this episode I talk about why I love clipless pedals. I don't always ride clipless 100% of the time, but it really helps on certain types of trails. Want to support this channel and help it grow? Tell your friends about Hardtail Party and become a Patron: / hardtailparty

I’m not sure who needs to hear this. But after watching your video and always contemplating clip less. I decided to give them a try. They where hear when I got home today . WOW what a difference. Less fatigued , up hills easier and more confidence in my riding. Not even using the same gears as I was before. Just need to be careful off of jumps compared to flats!

Honestly, great content mate. There's pros and cons and you're open to both, just like all of us other riders should be. There's a time and place for each respectively for each rider, that's for each of us to determine and not have somebody else tell you. Stay safe all 👊🏼

Awesome video! I’ve been riding Time ATAC clipless pedals exclusively for about 20 years now. Your other video on flats actually made me consider trying that again.

watched your pedal series today. Great stuff! I learned on flats for 20 years, rode nothing but clipless since mid 90s, but have started using flats again to work on wheelies, manuals, etc...As you said, either is good for different uses. The only true issue I have with flats is technical climbing; I pull up with my leading foot and flats don't work that way...making for some fun stalls at the wrong time.

Nice video.👍 Started using spd back in the 90's. Loved it, especially on a hardtail. You can really throw the bike around. I only really stopped cause my RA made my ankles less flexible.

When I tried clipless the first time I thought I'd be less confident at first, but found myself more confident on my bike almost immediately. On rougher sections the bike stays under me at all times, giving me a little more faith on quick and gnarly descents, where I would have bounced off the bike had I been wearing flats. I did learn the hard way to click out in time when stopping at a traffic light... but that's just a rite of initiation. I do find it's important to get the cleat angle right in order to prevent knee pain. I use multi-release cleats because they appear to give me a bit more float, which makes them more comfortable to me.

Just started ridng clips after 6 years on flats thinking they would be so scary and hard to get out of. I'm finding them really good. Good to know about the different cleats, and seems I have different one on each shoe lol.

I've mainly been on flats and I tried clipless pretty early in the start of my cycling and picked probably the worst trail to use them on for a beginner and fell over clipped in 6 times before I finally wised up. Definitely recommend not going to clipless early-on because people are told the general consensus is "that's what you graduate to" as you related in your other video. Use them on a need-by basis and not as a graduating into basis. I ditched the clipless a while back mainly because I still haven't found a shoe wide enough to accommodate my foot; my feet would get cold and tingly from being squeezed too tightly.

that’s interesting... i started out with SPDs, can’t say i loved them, but i never had any real complaints. i switched to egg-beaters because everyone loves them... me not so much. i used them for about 5 years then switched back to SPDs. loved them for a bit, but now i mostly ride flats.

Another thing if the cleats stick below the shoes, they can tear up the floors you’re walking on

Awesome video Steve! I have been switching back and forth from flat to clips and I love having both padals skills down. I would say that I love clips for DH runs and bike parks. Would you ever to do a video comparing the 2 types (SPDs and CBs) styles? Keep the videos coming.

@@hardtailparty I love them and I always told myself I would never run clips haha. I'm on the Mallet DH. Like the bigger platform and the pins are great. I also like the 6 degree of float feels like a flat but your still locked in.

I've been using Wellgo wpd-800 or wpd-801 since 1998 for XC. There must be better pedals, but they won't quit. Good video for the beginner! I just read some stuff on mtbr.com and hit the trails. I remember unclipping mid air once, and the time I hit a square shaped root that stopped me cold. I fell right over. The indignity! What fun. I didn't give up, and they seem second nature these days. If you spin at higher revolutions clipless pedals will keep your feet pinned in place.

I tried going to platform pedals on several occasions, but could never get used to them. I use Chesters and 510 Freeriders. I was AMAZED how much traction was provided, and really liked a lot about the setup - especially on janky tech, skinnies, etc. Anything slow with consequence. I thought climbing was fine as long as I used the "scrape the dogcrap off the bottom of your shoe" pedal method. Two things eventually drove me back. One was knee-pain. Those pins allow ZERO float during the pedal stroke, and just the opposite of most people, my knees hurt. The other thing is that I ride a plus hardtail here in the PNW, and on the warp speed rooty rocky rowdy descents around here, I had NO IDEA where my foot was on the pedal! I was thinking about my feet, and not the next turn. I was always getting jacked off my bike whenever I hit something awkward and my feet weren't where they should be. This is a non-issue when I'm clipped in... But I always put the flats back on when I'm doing practice sessions. I think flats will make you a better rider because you don't rely on a "hard" connection to the bike.
@sgazzz
@sgazzz 3 жыл бұрын
100% agree with this. Was hard to put my foot in the perfect spot and adjust/slide since the pins held so right versus the clear being in the perfect spot...do want to stick with flats for a while to build better technique though, but once I get that up, going back to clip less
@andrewdwight934

@@sgazzz I always put them on when I ride with my kid. She rides flats, so I can show her how to "drop her heels" and where her foot should be, etc. And whenever I get back on my clips afterward, I feel like superman, because I go down hill so much faster. I stand by my statement: Flats make you a better rider.

When i ride clipless i love the multi release, the only issue i have is that when you pedal strike it will dislodge you from the pedal.

One important note for those who have not tried clipless but might be about to give them a try; practice on a flat grassy or dirt are first, and here’s the important bit: -Become competent with both feet. You will naturally come to rely on one foot or the other as safer, easier and more comfortable, more nearly automatic. But you must be as nearly equally competent with both feet in all situations as you can muster; from a dead stop on flat ground, headed up or down, on sloped ground, clipping and unclipping on the fly… I can’t overstress this. If you don’t make the effort, its going to bite you the first time you need to clip in or unclip with the foot you haven’t trained. If you’re lucky, you’ll have some nice soft grass or dirt to fall on, but you could just as easily be in heavy traffic or in the middle of a gnarly rock section with a six foot drop on your unpracticed side. Please take this seriously. The intactness of your limbs is at stake.

I use xc racing shoes which are like road bike shoes with lugs and a small mtn bike cleat. Since you'll be spending some ride time riding both on and off road, it'll give you all the benefits of a stiff road shoe plus walk ability of a mtn shoe ( in case you gotta hike a bike at some point) . I even switched my full on road bike pedals to TTIME ATAC pedals with my light weight xc shoes.... it's great. And another great benefit, with mtn bike shoes you don't look like a pregnant duck when you're walking ( like on road shoes...lol those cleats are HUGE )... cheers.
