I needed a fun project, so I went to my local hardware store and bought some odds and ends. Then, I made them into a muzzle-loading, black powder pistol... Music: Shakey Graves - Buy his amazing music here shakeygraves.b... and check out his website www.shakeygraves.com One of the most amazing and versatile musicians out there :-) Used by permission of the publisher. Here is a simple drawing of my parts I started with: drive.google.c...

i recently met a few hipsters at a bar who loved shakey graves. It was quite interesting when i explained i learned about him from a video about a man building a gun in the garage. Excellent work btw.

I love this build. Reminds me of my youth spent building the things that 12 year olds were restricted in having. Guns, cannons and rockets! Oh my! The local hardware store was my constant source of imagination as well as materials. Now I have a prototype machine shop. I know what I'm doing in my retirement!

Not the first time I've heard this song but last time I heard it I was really into it at like 3am...turns out it was on THIS video and I'm still debating doing a build like this & ended up at your video I'm so happy I did because not only did you help me nail down the song/artist but you also helped me figure out exactly what action I want to use for me beautiful (almost free) gun to keep in the barn at the summer home...cheap enough that if it breaks/dies then I don't feel bad yet impractical enough that if it goes missing I also don't feel bad since it doesn't use center or rimfire bullets so if some idiot DOES try that, it'll go click without doing anything Truly your build is amazing to look at

Great work, I like how literally everything on the gun is from hardware parts. Just goes to show how simple firearms are.... And I like your idea of 2 pipes inside each other, which solves any questionable strength issues. Please make more gun videos like this!

This is something i can technically own here in the UK so long as it's modelled off of a pre 18th century firearm. I probably will never build one but i just thought I'd let other people know that as long as you don't threaten anyone with it the police can't legally take it from you.

Before you try making this lock from plan, build a mock up out of wood and try it. If you try to do a direct copy of of the lock parts from the drawing...Nothing fits and it will not work without a lot of extra filing. Building these parts is a, "Ball Buster" unless you have access to a metal cutting bandsaw.
@SugarcreekForge
@SugarcreekForge 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments CapnJackSB. If you made a lock, I would love to see it. I hope you post a video. I think making a mock-up so that you have a template to scribe around is a very good idea for making anything with small parts by hand. The parts are drawn to fit together perfectly, but like you said... a ball buster if you don't have a metal cutting bandsaw. Also, having a belt grinder makes it very easy to grind exactly to the lines of the drawing. Have a great weekend.

Seeing as this is common sense, but if an 18th Century firearm were to be wet, say from either rain or snow, it wouldn't fire 100% of the time. So it's safe to say that the pistol would be covered and or concealed to preserve the integrity of its firing upon action. Also since holsters were not as advanced back then, it's also noted that such a pistol would be cloaked under clothing. Further the load time is egregious and would also require it to be loaded at all times to be effective in a life threatening scenario. So that would make this a Pistol loaded and concealed on a person for self defense predating the 2nd Amendment. So why is it that people still don't believe and argue that carrying a pistol which is loaded and concealed wasn't commonplace before, during, and after the 2nd Amendment was written and ratified?

While you're at the store, don't forget to buy: Metalworking lathe with 6" chuck Band saw capable of cutting 3/8" metal stock. Industrial belt sander. Pillar drill Milling machine Grinding/polishing wheels. Why not go the whole hog and buy a rifling lathe, along with a CNC system for your milling machine so you don't need to get that horrible sticky spray adhesive all over your fingers?

Lol - Man, I would love to have a rifling lathe and a CNC mill. I will have to check the store the next time I am there. :-)

I don't think they'll have one, but, hey, you have all the kit you need to make one! Maybe another video?.......

That would be epic. I will really have to gain some mad skills before that could ever happen. If I ever do, I am going to name it the "tasmedic" in honor of your encouragement! Have a great week :-)

SugarcreekForge From what I see, you've already got all the skills! I'm so jealous of your set up. I guess it's my own fault; I have too many hobbies, so each one only gets a bit of my time and disposable income. So, I have lots of fun, but I don't really get to master anything I like doing. I do think it would be interesting to see you fabricate a rifle, though. Enjoy life; it's only available in limited quantities! Best wishes.

Thanks, my friend. It has taken me about 15 years to slowly build up my shop. Since I started making knives as a self-supporting hobby, I would sell them and just save the money to buy tools. Having lots of hobbies to dabble in can be very fun too, and it is amazing the varied knowledge you can gather. I will have to consider making a rifle! I like your quote about life - I will remember that one. Cheers!

This is a very late comment, and one that will almost certainly never get seen; but 1) amazing job. and 2) is it possible to adapt this design to make a muzzle loading musket? got to prepare for the zombie apocalypse somehow. Joking of course, but it making one promises to be great fun.

Hey anyone named "The Fixer" needs to be listened to in my book. 1) Thanks very much for taking the time to leave an encouraging comment. Cheers 2) Yes. The same lock would work equally well in a musket. I happen to know that zombies give a wide berth to a man carrying a musket he made with his own hands! They know he is self-sufficient and not to be messed with :-)

No mention of what caliber it is. Guessing 50-ish, since 1/2inch black nipples are common. ( I used to work in a hardware store similar to the one you showed. Pity it went out of business.)I was wondering on that first shot of the square tubing. Then I thought, "hmm...heat, twist, rifling? Eh, maybe not."

I shot a .357 bullet out of it and it was too small for the barrel. I am guessing that it is in 40-ish range. The inner barrel liner narrows the barrel. Have a great week!
