@@ibslice Except the top of the charts were HDR 1000 true HDR monitors while this Samsung unit is only an HDR 600 rated unit. You also can't complain and pan a monitor for not being true HDR while being a flagship gaming monitor and then a few minutes later state that those true HDR monitors are in the $2k+ range. I got the feeling from this and the regular features review that he didn't like the curved Samsung and thus set out to try and tear it down wherever he could. There definitely appears to be a certain bias against this monitor for some reason that does appear to be bleeding through.
@ArnoldMejia
@ArnoldMejia 4 жыл бұрын
@@Talishar I've been shopping for a good HDR monitor for a year now that can fit my 27in dual monitor set up. I appreciated the thorough information and didn't feel a bias or the appearance of one. He's just letting you know where this monitor stands in the classic informative unbiased Unboxed way. It just sucks this market is where it's at, where I'll probably upgrade my LG C9 tv before I can upgrade my monitors. HDR really is more of a drastic change at 27in than going from 1440p to 2160p.
@Talishar
@Talishar 4 жыл бұрын
@@ArnoldMejia Except the monitor never billed itself as true HDR which is HDR 10+ cert like the monitors at the top of the rankings. He immediately jumped on the curve and you could tell from that point on, he was gunning for it so to speak. The problem is, true HDR at 27 inches is actually going to be a lot more expensive with the same response time and refresh rate. He says how this is billed as their premium monitor, but it's actually not. This is their penultimate gaming monitor. It's primary focus should be on response time, refresh rate and other things related to the important things a gaming monitor should be. He instead tried to focus extra hard on the lack of full HDR which it never was billed as and the curve. The thing is though, he already admitted he doesn't like curved monitors but continued to pan it anyways. The problem you're going to have with monitors is that their relatively compact frames and much higher pixel density over TVs means that any of the big tech from the TV world is going to be extremely expensive in the smaller monitor space. When I saw the ~$700 for this monitor, I knew it wasn't going to be a FALD, HDR 10+ monitor. Samsung doesn't even bill it as such. I wouldn't even fault this monitor for only having 8 zones as a FALD monitor with these other specs would probably be pushing $1.5 to $2k. You aren't going to see Samsung lose their asses in trying to push that high end tech down to such a low price point in such a big jump. Yet the entire review felt to me that he was just hammering the monitor for not reaching near the level of those $2k monitors.

But mind you thats in the US. Edit: They're now up to 599.99, but that's still 100$ less compared to the original price ($699) Note that this is for the 27 inch. The 32 inch version is 799.99. Definitely still worth it over hdr400. The difference is very noticeable even if it reverts to sdr levels in some instances, this monitor in sdr is still beautiful so it doesn't really mess with the experience, at least in my experience. Playing a game like RE2 or Read dead 2 is impossible in HDR mode on my cheaper Acer Nitro and and playing in hdr on this monitor is a significantly better experience especially with the speed this monitor runs at. Imo HDR on this is more than just a nice to have, I would say if you want a monitor that can make scenic games immersive and beautiful while also allowing top performance for competitive gaming, in HDR, this well worth the premium you spend over something like the LG27gl850-B especially when the standard mode alone offers a better experience.

@@gsegarra21 That's why I didn't even consider HDR when I bought this monitor. Haven't gotten it yet, but I think it's pressing enough compared to competition to satisfy me against all of its issues. My main requirement was that it has to be OLED and still perform in low response and high refresh rates with minimal artifacts. This excels at that, this is QLED (Quantum OLED), and that's even better.
@Alendo
@Alendo 4 жыл бұрын
@@tycorrell5390 I'm sorry to be the one to tell you. QLED is not OLED. QLED is just Samsungs name for it's quantom dot panel technology. It's still a backlit LED LCD. If you bought this because you had a requirement that it should be OLED, and someone told you it was, I'd ask for a refund.

@@Alendo Thanks for the info man, feel bad for mixing it up somehow and advocating it here. So it's "Quantum dot LED". I saw QLED back when it came out for their TVs and was impressed, so I'm not surprised I have still been naive about it after using it for a couple weeks. Explains why darks aren't all that dark in comparison. The picture quality and vibrancy is on par though and excellent. I'm happy with this monitor. I'm still waiting on my G7 which will go next to my PG27UQ. I've been through so many monitors over the last few years, but I always come back to a FALD display because it does more for image quality than any other single feature. I'd pay through the nose for either one of these VA's, or an LG nano-ips with a FALD backlight, but for some reason the PG27UQ and X27 are STILL the kings after all this time. I'm looking forward to playing with the G7, and suspect that for playing fast FPS games it might well become my new favourite, but I just can't get rid of my PG27UQ for playing everything else.

@@HMaximiano It's definitely my favourite non-HDR monitor. I have used a lot of VA's and usually consider them trash, but the g7 is a whole new league. However, HDR on it is terrible and it absolutely cannot replace a more expensive FALD monitor. In it's price range though, it's definitely become my main recommendation.

please someone answer me if you know it as i see this with my monitor you can only change the BFI value in SDR mode but i wonder how you say changing the BFI will affect the EOTF values! because when you are in HDR mode this BFI section is greyed out so i assume it means that it doesnt affect the way HDR behaves

@@mryellow6918 It was good until it wasn't. Mine had problems, the screen would tear and black out every 5 to 10 minutes. I probably got a bad QC batch, they stopped selling them for a month or two because of it. I returned mine and didn't get again though. I went with the Asus PG35VQ.

i noticed a HDR bug in windows. When i play C.O.D warzone you have to manually enable HDR through windows display setting. In turn that method the games metadata looks washed out.compared to a game that has the auto switch np. I found if you enable HDR and the restart PC with it enabled the metadata seems corrected and the desktop and game are no longer washed out... hummm ???

to be fair though, even the highest-end HDR1000 model also reverse back to SDR contrast in the complex scene and it shows in your own chart. 4000:1 is basically a decent VA contrast
@Scorpius165
@Scorpius165 4 жыл бұрын
4000:1 is one of the best static contrast ratios you can get on a PC monitor and only a handful of monitors go beyond that. Vs 1000-2000 : 1 it makes a huge difference, and to really go to a higher tier, your only option is basically an OLED TV. Personally I don't really care about HDR, as most games still don't support it. But I do care about uniformity, color accuracy (in SDR), good contrast ratios and general good picture quality and I am never going to get that with an edge-lit cheapo overclocked VA panel. I wonder if the monitor manufacturers will ever get that into their skulls. Plus that insane curve really puts a nail in its coffin for me.
@e21big
@e21big 4 жыл бұрын
@@Scorpius165 a good VA monitor - or even the cheapest VA TV can go up to 5000:1 easily, 4000:1 really isn't that exceptional as far as contrast goes and if a grand and a half HDR1000 panel can only archive that much with their fancy full array local dimming, reversing back to 2000:1 really isn't that much of a difference, I just don't think Hardware Unboxed is being objective. They didn't even test it out in real games like they did with the old Samsung CHG90 and Predator X27. This monitor should at least perform on par with CHG90 at the very least. But I do agree that with you on the curving, Samsung really drive me nut with that. They really should have at least included a flat model alternative to their curve high end display

I've had this for almost a month now and the more i use the more i dont like it, i sold my XB271HU for this and sure the contrast is a little better and the black levels are a little better but they are still nothing special and hdr is worthless with only 600 nits and edge lit. I feel like i could have just stayed with the XB271HU, crazy how monitors in this price range havent improved at all in this price range. Crazy how i didnt even pay that much more for my LG 55C9 which is better in every single way by absolute miles. But for most games i prefer playing on smaller screens which is why i still have a monitor. I just hope monitors improve soon, the new Acer Predator X32 sounds interesting but costs over 3k.... for a little less than 2k i would be willing to buy though.
