Melody from South India - ( Introduction of the Raga )
Scale: Ascending: S R G M P D N S
Descending: S N D P M G R S
The 3rth and 6th are flat. Mood is romantic.
This first raga of the concert was recorded and mixed live on the 30th of march 1991 at the Carl-Orf Hall, Gasteig in Munich.

Some Dhrupad singers have said that it is during the aalaap, jod, and jhaala sections that the real nature of the Raaga is revealed. That is when the rasa is fully expressed -- rasaabhivyakti takes place and the listener is filled with the raaga's main rasa. When rhythm comes in the rasa-vyan^jana is reduced. Definitely, taans are entertaining and contain the rasa of adbhuta and even haasya. But to feel and absorv the deep character of the raag, the first three sections are the best. To clarify, I am just repeating what I have read /heard from master musicians.

"Kerwani" is taken from Carnatic music to Hindustani. It is a complete scale with all seven notes in ascending and descending. Taking C as tonic Sa, the Carnatic scale is having C, D, D#, F, G, G#, B in ascending (descending it has same notes in descending order)

SO VERY BEAUTIFUL A RAAGA OF KARNATAKA ORIGIN - MEANING MAATAA SARASWATEE - ; PLAYED SO VERY BEAUTIFULLY TOO. (SA, SHUDDHA-RE, KOMAL-GA; SHUDDHA-MA; PA; KOMAL-DHA; SHUDDHA-NI; THE DESCENDING ALSO USES THE SAME NOTES. IT IS A HARMONIC MINOR SCALE).

Carnatic doesn't mean Karnataka....Karna.. as in ear in Sanskrit ...that which is sweet to the ears... is what it indicates.. Just pointing out that is all

Nilkanth Deshpande Hi The picture you see is the original cover of the CD called " Meditative Romance " wich starts with this Alap of Kerwani, followed by track nr. 2 -Raga Des and nr.3-a Folk Indian tune. So there´s no further development of Raga Kerwani on this recording, unfortunately !

In description of the raga you have written something wrong...it should be Ascending: S R g m P d N S and Descending S N d P m g R S...Correct me if I am wrong...

Hi its a Wonderful piece... I just wonder about the Title as Kerwani. Is it the same raga as Kirwani from Kirwani Thaat ? Can any one just leave a little comment on it.. Thanks Massimiliano

Here you can find a few comments from a Sarod player on the raag, which is similar, by the way, to the western scale Harmonic Minor: sarod.com.au/raga-kirwani/

This is Keera vani.. Keera is sanskkrit for parrot Vani is the sound Thaats are from hindustani music There is no Kirvani thaat.. Regards AP
