Both the writer Harlan Ellison and songwriter/entertainer Paul Anka are guests on a full episode of 'The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder' during this January, 14th, 1999 visit.
Harlan Ellison (1934 - 2018) was an American writer, known for his prolific and influential work in New Wave speculative fiction, and for his outspoken, combative personality. His published works include more than 1,700 short stories, novellas, screenplays, comic book scripts, teleplays, essays, and a wide range of criticism covering literature, film, television, and print media. Some of his best-known works include the Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" (he subsequently wrote a book about the experience that includes his original screenplay), his A Boy and His Dog cycle, and his short stories "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" and "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman". He was also editor and anthologist for Dangerous Visions (1967) and Again, Dangerous Visions (1972). Ellison won numerous awards, including multiple Hugos, Nebulas, and Edgars. (Wikipedia)
Paul Anka OC (b.1941) is a Canadian-American singer, songwriter, and actor. Anka became famous with hit songs like "Diana", "Lonely Boy", "Put Your Head on My Shoulder", and "(You're) Having My Baby". He wrote such well-known music as the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and one of Tom Jones' biggest hits "She's a Lady". He also wrote the English lyrics to Claude François and Jacques Revaux's music for Frank Sinatra's signature song, "My Way", which has been recorded by many, including Elvis Presley. Two songs he co-wrote with Michael Jackson, "This Is It" (originally titled "I Never Heard") and "Love Never Felt So Good", became posthumous hits for Jackson. In 1972, a street in Ottawa was named Paul Anka Drive. In 1981, the Ottawa City Council named August 26 as "Paul Anka Day" to celebrate his quarter-century in show business.
Anka won the Juno Award for Composer of the Year (an award given for songwriting) in 1975. He has been nominated for Juno Awards many other times. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1980. Anka was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in October 2004.
Anka was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2005. (Wikipedia)
Among his proudest accomplishments was writing the Academy Award-nominated theme for The Longest Day, the 1962 film in which he also starred.
Songwriting and performing "are what gave me the confidence to keep going," he says. Becoming a junior associate of Sinatra and the Rat Pack also had its privileges. By the '70s, the success of "My Way" and a string of hits like "(You're) Having My Baby" confirmed his status as an icon of popular music. His later achievements as a recording artist included "Hold Me 'Til the Morning Comes," a hit duet with Peter Cetera in 1983, the Spanish-language album Amigos in 1996, and Body of Work, a 1998 duets album that featured Frank Sinatra, Celine Dion, Patti LaBelle, Tom Jones and daughter Anthea Anka. If this wasn't enough, it was revealed upon its release in 2009, that Anka co-wrote Michael Jackson's posthumous #1 worldwide hit, "This Is It," which has further cemented his place upon the most prolific and versatile songwriters of any generation. Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought provoking late night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.

Not too surprisingly, the closed captioning on Harlan's segment actually showed the word "catapult" instead of the word he used, which was "catafalque." Sort of underscores his whole point doesn't it.

What a great writer!!! On the other hand I was cracking a smile in the beginning, when Tom talk about the hungry kids in Russia, and the government forget about US kids. Well , now the government sent billions to Ukraine and forget about inflation and serious problems in their own country. Nothing changes...
