Basketball great Meadowlark Lemon passed away aged 83 at his Arizona home on Sunday. He was one of the greatest and most popular to ever play the game despite never competing in the NBA and instead playing for the Harlem Globetrotters for all 24 years of his professional career. He was known for making unbelievable half-court shots during games, some from behind his back without ever looking at the hoop. His wife Cynthia confirmed the news of her husband's death to The New York Times .

I saw the Globetrotters in 74. During warm-ups, Meadowlark would go to half court and shoot from there. Every shot would go around the rim and then out. The crowd was watching him and he woukd be real animated at every miss. Right before the buzzer at the end of the game, he went to the same spot and shot it and it went whoosh right in. He was playing us. What a great talent he was.

As a kid I attended games several years when the Globetrotters played my local sheriff's office team for charity. Meadowlark Lemon grabbed my bucket of popcorn and dumped it on the head of an opponent. Every year after that he spotted me in the crowd as my Dad was a cop and I got front row seats. He'd point at me in recognition and come over to get my popcorn. He included me in his funny conspiracy. That little bit of recognition from one of my heros meant everything to me. Between him and Curly Niel I went after basketball excellence and made our county all star team as a forward. Those guys had a huge impact on my self esteem. I wish I could have thanked them personally. I will never forget them.

Outrageously talented basketball comedians. I remember watching them on T.V. as a kid and laughing at all the nonstop mischief-making pranks they pulled and at the same time marveling at the skill they possessed on the court. Cheers

The black Amateur team that in 1948 won ALL white NBA team that has most championships , LA Lakers , back then Minneapolis Lakers . 3 first black NBA players , Nat Clifton and Chuck Cooper , both from Harlem Globetrotters , Earl Lloyd from college team ... all drafted in 1950 .

@@alan30189 not that I know of. His son was an assistant coach on the football team, I'm not sure of his basketball past. He is about 6'1" though, so neither he nor his kids who I went to school with got the height meadowlark had. One grandson played on the basketball team for a year if I remember correctly.

One of the neatest thing I have ever seen was in 1975 in Dulles Airport in Washington DC. I was looking up the Airport concourse and I saw Curly Neal in a floor full-length fur coat with one way glasses in front leading several other taller men in floor full-length fur coats with glasses. I stood back and enjoyed the show. Rarely you get to see the Harlem Globetrotters in full regatta walking through an airport. I was fully impressed.

You do know "these guys" were once also "the new ones" since the original ones started in 1926 And before you say they were the best ever: Wilt "The Stilt" shortly played in the 58-59 season, most of you might know him not by his nickname, but his last name Chamberlain for scoring 100 points in a different league called the NBA, a record that still stands unbroken up to this day (yes even now when you read this ;) )

I saw the Globetrotters at the Cow Palace as a Cub Scout 1962-64. The one shot I’ll always remember when one player planted the ball in the center-circle on the run and the next player, maybe Meadowlark Lemon., kicked the ball straight into the hoop. The gag was used in all their performances, but actually making it was rare. The Entire arena erupted in cheers, including the team. It was a rare moment.
