Welcome to the Next Project! T-Style mod project - Episode 5Lots, and lots of baby steps.
Hope you enjoy this #telecaster to #acoustisonic guitar project.
00:00 - lights, camera, action
00:04 - project intro
01:02 - getting covered
01:59 - where's the bridge?
02:53 - sanding and more sanding
04:00 - dewaxed shellac mix'n
05:00 - dewax on, dewax off
06:09 - oh crap!
07:55 - crap correction
08:30 - doh!
10:02 - are we there yet?
10:51 - neck pocket revival
11:48 - poke'n holes
13:02 - cover up
13:29 - last look, get the lights
As the project enters the later steps, progress seems to slow down. That's not really the case, but the "big" steps are now complete and most of the remaining tasks are small and numerous. You can work all day, look back and feel as if nothing was accomplished, but the small steps eventually add up.
Also at this point in the project, I find myself jumping around from task to task. This video kicks off with the making of the control and access covers. I used the original tele style control plate as a template to cut/rout the new rear cover plate. It was nice not having to make another such template from scratch. The main access cover was a different story, and I started with a simple paper template for sizing, then made an MDF template and on to the (final) cover material.I don't expect that this will be the "final" cover, as I may have to open the access hole up to allow room for some onboard electronics and a battery, still working on that.
Time, a lot of time, for sanding.
I spent up to 2.5 hours sanding the body to a point where I felt it was ready for sealer. Using my (least) favorite tool, an orbital sander.Yes, I complain about stupid things.
With the sanding complete the body was ready for a new sealer coat. I had been researching a number of different sealers and chose to go with Dewaxed Shellac for this project. Yes, other options would have been good as well.
The primary reason I chose shellac, was due to all the end-grain of the spruce top and the very soft and porous body wood. I didn't want a finish that would darken the end-grain dramatically, so I chose Dewaxed Shellac.
Mixed my own shellac, a simple process and actually less expensive than purchasing, which proved to be a difficult topic. Once the shellac was properly mixed, shaken, and fully dissolved, I strained the shellac to capture any contaminants, and started coating the body.After each full coat, I allowed the shellac to dry which was nearly instantly. I sanded between coats with 320 grit paper, cleaned and removed all sanding dust and repeated the process.It was after the 3rd coat that I realized I have made a blunder. I had forgotten to tape off where the new bridge will glue to the spruce top - oh crap! Not the end of the world, I just re-sanded the top with 320, measured for the bridge location, taped off the glue area and repeated my shellac steps.Not completely with the game, I now realized I wanted to change the size of the bridge a bit. So, I cut the bridge to its new dimension, cut the masking tape to match the new glue area, sanded and corrected the shellac application - again.
Finally all the sealer is on the body and neck (didn't show the neck work, rather boring).
Time to jump to the next task.Since this guitar will have a new bridge, has a new fingerboard and new frets, and since the factor neck pocket wasn't cut perfectly. I decided to make an oversized neck pocket shim and glue it in. Using a scrap piece of mahogany, I thicknesses to a fat 1/8" thickness. Then spent some time shaping it to fit neatly into the pocket. Once I was happy with the fit, I glued and clamped the new shim in place. Removed the clamps the next morning and shaped the overhanging shim to the body.
To wrap up the video, I installed the control and access plates on the back of the body. All fit well, and I was able to start "seeing" where the bridge pickup would mount to the access plate. Again, this plate may have to be enlarged when the wiring and electronics are figured out.Please be sure to Ring the Bell and Subscribe so you are notified when the Build Video drops, and leave a comment.I greatly appreciate feedback.

Hi, I am Rudi Beuzel, living in the Netherlands and watching a lot of your videos with lots of pleasure. I am building the Acoustasonic Telecaster from multiplex for the body and neck from AliExpress, as well as the other parts . For the inner parts of the body I have used 18 mm multiplex. For the front and back I used 3 mm multiplex. All went well, certainly if you know this is my first build. The body is ready now. Few mistakes made. One is that the cavity for the neck bridge became tot big because me router slipped out of control. Luckily it was easy to repair. The second mistake was the inlay of purfling for the countours, they are easy to brake and so it did. As a result it is a bit messy in one corner, but overall okay. The contours, sides and back are coloured with a water-based ink. The front-centre is neutral, so the colour of the multiplex. On top is 4 layers of oil-wax and over this one coat of-beeswax. Right now I am into the electronics: under saddle piezo and sticky piezo via a pre-amplifier ( fish man) into a 5way switch. The fishman is in the body and can blend the two piezo’s. But I can reach these because the back-plate is attached via magnets. On the front there is a neck-pickup and a bridge-pickup, leading into to 5 way switch. On the front there is the volume control, tone control and 5 way switch. Via the switch I can chose between: 1. Piezo’s alone 2. Piezo + neck up 3. Neck pu 4. Neck + bridge pu 5. Bridge pu The bridge is adjustable acoustic wooden bridge. Snares are grounded within the body. Hope to Isolate noises via alu-tape. Reaching final stage. I hope will be ready within two weeks.

R Beuzel, thank you for watching all those videos! That is a very good project overview you gave - thanks! My project has been placed on a temporary hold, as I am waiting for a small onboard pre-amp to arrive. Sadly, it seems to be missing it transit, so I will probably complete the remainder of the guitar and when the parts arrive I will re-visit and update the project. I have a saddle ribbon piezo and a "sticky" piezo for somewhere under the soundboard (top). I wish my project would be ready in 2 weeks, not likely to happen. Thanks again for watching and sharing your project details. Be safe and take care - from Florida, US.

OK Nice series. Hope to see the final result when, presumably you have finished your GGBO2021 guitar. This has given me some ideas. The idea of a carved top inset into essentially a hollow, or semi hollow guitar. A bit like the construction of the Gibson 339, with a solid back, routed out, but with an arched/carved top. Was thinking of making contour templates for the top and using a router sled (to be made!) with a surfacing bit, to create a stepped contour, for final smoothing. I really like the binding around the top insert in your guitar, here. if i ever get round to making my guitar, might be nice with some checkerboard style binding strips around the carved insert top. if that makes any sense. That's why i like watching you guys in the GGBO... lots of ideas come from watching creative people... (Insert regulatory comment about great artists stealing!)
@theNextProject
@theNextProject 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, thanks for watching. This project was put in the back-burner til some parts arrive...still waiting. I like the idea of adding a carved top to a hollowed-out body. Great idea! The top binding was an interesting experiment. Making the templates was a challenge and using Bondo really helped get things to fit tight. A good learning project I need to make a new router sled, mine is less than perfect, scrap wood at best, ha. The GGBO is a wealth of ideas. Nice to see how people look at a given task from so many points-of-view. A good place to learn and steal, modify, improve... Take care!

Thank you very much for watching, and I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and project. I often wonder if others will "get" my quirky sense of humor, so I'm glad you get it. As for transparency, I can't show all the "lowlights", there just isn't enough time... I do feel it's important to show that things don't always go as planned/expected. Shit happens for sure, that's part of life. The good and the bad. I'm glad to hear you are excited to get new vid notifications. I wish I could release more often, just not enough hours in the day. Besides that Tele continuing to look amazing I just wanted to mention how much I love your pro-level editing and narration in these. Can't wait till the algorithm finally picks you up and you get the thousands of viewers pouring in you and your work deserves. Also that garage of yours looks super cozy to work in. I'm currently building a HSH Strat from a Harley Benton kit. On the last pass to expand the pickup cavities I eyeballed "a little more" and kinda forgot about that big ol' hole for the tremolo system on the back. Got some free practice in plugging annoying angles from that. So welcome to team blunder! Often annoyed - never defeated.

The Harlequin, thank you very much, very kind words! I'm not holding my breath on the YT algorithm noticing me. At this time I have NOT monetized the channel, so YT isn't as likely to promote me. However, I have seen some YT ads on my vids - that irritates me. The garage is VERY cozy, and I took the picture after I cleaned it out and the garbage was hauled away. Your project sounds cool and I feel your pain in finding that "big ol' hole" in the back. That kinda thing happens, makes your eye twitch a bit. Then it's time to figure out how to fix it. Yep, it happens - sorry! I like "team blunder", good moto! Good luck with your project, Be safe and take care!

Terje, WOW! Thanks for watching all the videos, and sorry I don't have more prepared for you - yet. I don't do videos full-time, so I can't deliver quickly as some other YT channels do. If I'm lucky, I have about 6 hours a week in the garage working on projects. As for the Tele project, I had hoped to be doing some sound samples by now. However, I ordered a small on-bard preamp, it should have been here by now, but it is still "lost" in transit. The good news, the delay on Tele-mod parts have given me time to work on another guitar project. I have a video about 80% done for that project, so it should be out about a week from this message. Glad you also enjoyed the drill transmission video interesting. It was kinda fun, and it's a good feeling to put broken things back together. I'll get more videos posted as quickly as I can. @@theNextProject I just ordered the Tele kit with the intention of carving the sh*t out of it. Mark, thanks for watching, and I'm glad the series is giving you some ideas. There will be another episode, or two. Currently progress is held hostage by missing shipment(s) of an onboard preamp. The preamp will boost the signal from the piezo waffer transducer and a piezo bridge ribbon transducer. I also just ordered (today) parts to attempt to wire my own preamp... I had hoped it wouldn't come to that. I'm no electronics guy, but that doesn't stop me. Another bad thing about the break in progress with this project, it give me time to "think". I typically change things when I think. So, that probably means more unnecessary work. Thanks for the comment, be safe and take care!

TicTax, thanks for watching! Greetings from Florida US! One reason I build from a kit like this is the limited loss potential. To prototype/first build something "new" from scratch, only offers me a great chance to screw up, at a cost. This kit was about $70US, I can't purchase good raw lumber to do a scratch build for that amount, so why risk $$ on a learning project. I feel pretty confident now that I could build this guitar from scratch now, and not have many surprises along the way. If you are considering a build like this, consider starting with a kit, or cheap guitar. Just a thought. I have no courage, and no great skill, so I wade slowly into the unknown. It's all fun and educational. Being a bit scared isn't all bad either, keeps us on our toes. Good luck with your build, you can do it! Be safe and take care!

0:42 ... Who doesn't???!! 🤣 Looking nice!!! When you're adding a touch of super glue for strength it looks like you're applying it through the cloth? Or is the cloth just protect the surface at the point of application?

Right!! Let the chips fly! The cloth/rag is pushed up close for protection only. I'm known to spill and make a mess. YT is putting ads in/on my videos!!! Grr, I'm not monitized! Sorry if you have to wait for ads, I hate ads! I hope you're doing well. Be safe and take care!

JAH STIX, thanks for watching! There will be an EP6, I have a lot of little stuff recorded already, but have also been waiting on an on-board preamp to arrive. It's been over a month and no delivery. So... the plan will change a bit. I'll be doing a temporary completion of the guitar, then when (if) all the other bits 'n pieces arrive, I'll revisit the project and add the "acoustic" sound items. Sorry for the delay, just how my projects seem to go. Be safe and take care!

Fantastic project and great videos ! I feel less lonely because i want to do the same but from raw wood. What kind of microphone and wiring do you plan to use ?
@theNextProject
@theNextProject 3 жыл бұрын
Pierre, thank you for watching! I "hope" to build one of these from scratch in the future. I have all the templates needed now. Also most of the process is figured out too. I have an under saddle piezo and a waffler piezo planned, in addition to the standard tele bridge pup. I had ordered an onboard preamp for the piezo pups, it went missing in transit. Ordered another...it's lost too. So I just ordered the electronic parts to make my own ( not my area of knowledge ). So things are about to get interesting. Sorry for the delay in getting a next episode out. Hopefully soon-ish. Be safe and take care!

@@theNextProject Thanks for your answer. Very bad luck for the preamp ! :( For my part i would like to use a an under saddle piezo too but mixed with classical microphone (as we can see in the Fishman Matrix Infinity Mic Blend kit) and also a standard télébridge pup. But i don't know yet how to wire all that things :) While i'm searching how to do it, I'm Waiting for your next episod, maybe it will help me to find inspiration ;) keep up your inspiring and good work ! Be safe and take care too!

I'm not wishing ill on you but, I do enjoy the blunders As the saying goes, anyone who doesn't mess up doesn't do anything I did notice something in the background, will it be an acoustic or arch top?
@theNextProject
@theNextProject 3 жыл бұрын
Glenn, it's all good. I want everyone can see that "crap happens". It's not the end of the world - usually. I don't want to hide stuff like this, as it may be just the reminder someone else needs. And, it's funny to see happen. I really don't flip out much when things happen. I almost expect something to go wrong, and when things go smoothly, I just appreciate it that much more. Fortunately, the blunders in this episode were rather minor and easily corrected. My eye does still twitch on occasion - ha. The background, very good eye! That is the start of my GGBO 21 project. The idea started as a Gretsch 6120-ish/Electromatic-esq style guitar. But as I was making the body forms I started "modifying" the idea. Now, I hope to have 5 different models that I can build from those body forms. Hmm, I may be crazy. I have yet to make the top and back vacuum molds, but they should be on the bench in a week or so. I hope to have a start video in about a month on that project. A lot of up-front/non-guitar fabrication going on before any wood is cut for the guitar itself. Yep, I'm crazy. Thank you very much for watching, be safe and take care!

Fantastic as always, but did you have the goat's permission to be sacrificed. Just asking,
@theNextProject
@theNextProject 3 жыл бұрын
LOL, have you ever gotten a goat's permission? It's not an easy task, so I tend to distract them right before I push them into the volcano. I guess that's why most goats are a bit cranky, they may always expect something's up. That was a really good question. Take care!

My experiments with shellac have been frustrating... feels like it's dry before it even hits the wood :) ...or I'm too slow.
@theNextProject
@theNextProject 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, thanks for watching! This batch was drying pretty fast, but it all went well. I was the only real problem with the shellac application. I had watched a video by Paul Sellers about applying shellac to a bench. He keep saying "wet on wet" and "work from the middle out". I think I failed to follow his advice most of the time, but got rather lucky anyway. Good luck with your project, take care!

Andy, thanks for watching and sorry for the extended delay on this project. This took a backseat as I've now been waiting nearly 2-months for an onboard preamp order to arrive. Actually 2 separate orders, from 2 different vendors - both missing in shipping. So, I recently ordered "parts" and hope to wire my own little onboard preamp. Not what I was hoping to do. It will be WAY out of my knowledge bank. Something will be on the bench soon, and it will be a surprise to us both. Thanks again for watching, sorry for the delay. Be safe, take care!
