︾ Hey Riders,
Our thoughts were largely skeptical about Harley-Davidson entering the ADV scene so we tried to stay as unbiased as possible in this review of the Pan America. Especially, after the first impression we have lingering from when we first laid eyes on those cyclopic-looking pictures during Harley-Davidson initial press release ;) Okay, well here it is, our more in depth look into the Pan America. Hope this helps some of you guys and hopefully, our message at the end reaches the ears of Harley-Davidson.

I love my Pan America. It is such a fun bike to ride. I rode it to Alaska (Deadhorse) and back from Southern California (9000 Miles) and it performed flawlessly. I just got back from a ride down the Baja Peninsula last week (1000 miles) and I had a couple problems. The chain stretched to where I couldn't adjust it anymore, and about 60 miles south of the Border, my stator failed, which caused the battery to drain. However, these problems could happen to any brand. Probably my main upgrade to the Pan America would be to switch to a shaft drive. I know the chain is better for off road, but the Pan America is never going to be a hard core off roader. It's more dirt roads and forest roads. Anyway, thought I would share my experience and 2 cents.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your PA. You're putting in some good miles. I have a KTM 1290 SA now and was thinking about replacing it within the next year. I've done a few test rides on the PA and must say that HD has done a nice job. Out of the gate, they seemed to have done a lot of homework to make a competitive bike. This is totally outside the box for them. They stepped on the competitors home field. They didn't hit a home run, but I think they slid into 3rd base. Way to swing HD. I've never been a big HD fan for the most part. Having a touring BMW and a KTM ADV bike, I Am pulling for HD in this segment. Hopefully they will stick with it and continue to improve the platform. Safe travels and many miles / adventures in the future.

You mentioned the ride to Deadhorse, what did you think of that experience? Been to the mid-west and west coast out of Pennsylvania. Heading to AZ and UT, again summer of 24. I have Alaska on my must do ride bucket list. That's going to be approximately 13000 mile trip from Pa. I even have a also retired ex-coworker that now lives in Delta Junction. That's southeast of Fairbanks. He's looking for me to stop in when I get to AK. Lots of planning, but it would be a epic ride.

@@curtissmith8789 Thanks Curtis. I recently sold the Pan American. It just so happens I was at a BMW motorcycle dealer , looking at their bikes. When I was ready to leave, my PA wouldn't start. The BMW dealership was so nice. They had their mechanic look at it (he used to be a Harley mechanic) and he couldn't get it started. They offered to take it as a trade-in, and I accepted. I now ride a 2023 GS 1250 Adventure. I plan to do a video soon a post it on my site.

What are you thinking about your 1250 GSA. My riding partner has one, he loves it. I think it's a very nice bike. I really like it too. If you're looking at a ADV bike, it's hard to dismiss a BMW. I will say everyone that rode a PA liked it.

Probably one of the best unbiased reviews. I test rode one and it will be my next bike. I currently own a HD Street Glide touring model and will not get rid of it. Different bikes for different riding adventures. Main reason I would steer towards an HD PA is dealership network availability. For those who don't live near a huge city metro area, it makes a difference. I didn't get into the riding motorcycles to be a full time mechanic, I got into it to ride. I don't care if its an motorcycle, atv, boat, jet ski, whatever toy it is. Stuff does break.

The PANAMERICA 1250 special has arrived in the top class of adventure motorcycles. Since 26.06.2020 I own a PAN Special beside my BMW GS 1250 HPA. With my friends from K+M Harleyworld we got startet with the project 1-100.000 km. Our vision is to check the usability, the reliability and the sustainability of the new HD Motorcycle. Challenge 1 and 2 related to the usability and reliability was already completed end of October. We mounted a lot of useful stuff to make the Pan really usable for off-road adventures. Therefore a lot of innovations are mounted on my PAN „Elvis“ to make it fit for purpose. Then we crossed all high alp passes on gravel and asphalt in July. In August we went to the island of corse to cross also all high passes under high temperature conditions (40 degrees or hotter outside temp) At least my PAN has felt sand under its tyres for the first time. In September / October we got started with challenge 2. We moved to Morocco to the high Atlas region. We crossed all high Atlas passes including the Col de Ouano on gravel, we circled the big duna of Erg Chebbi on old rally Dakar tracks and we checked out heavy city traffic under high temperature conditions. Result: The PAN collected during 4 month almost 30577 km on its meter. Almost 15% of this driven kilometers where been carried out on unsaved roads, mud, gravel or sand. So unter the line the PAN made it on all playgrounds where the competitor brands usually run their shows. This without breakdown or other serious problems….. On 31st October, I have shipped my PAN to Chile. On 3rd of January 2022 I will start my adventure „all the way up“ riding the Panamericana highway from Argentina to Alaska. This last and long lasting test is mainly relayed to the point sustainability. Chapeau Harley at this point… If you are interested, check out Biker.Jo on KZfaq or Instagram …KR Jo

I rode my Yamaha FZ1 to the Pan America Demo. I expected the PA to feel slow... But in sport mode it was almost as much of a rocket as my FZ1. Incredible that a bike can handle the road at 136 Mph (Fastest my riding partner took it) and then ride dirt.

Thank you for the review. I enjoyed several points you brought up, including the point about the compression ratio and less than premium gasoline. I have ridden one myself, though only on road and just loved the bike. I am 5'11" and if felt like it was build for me. Fantastic engine, felt lighter and more nimble than I expected, and handled great on the pavement. They wouldn't let me take it off road, of course. I look forward to a middle weight as well and hope Harley does a great job with it.

I find your information about the Pan American to be accurate mostly from one who actually own one with 6 other motorcycles If you change out the stock HD tires to the more aggressive ones they have for the PA , you will find it to be a very capable bike . The only really bad thing I have found about the PA isn't with the bike .How HD put the bike out there with out really educating the dealers and their mechanics about them 1st . Also the backlog for getting accessories from them is ridiculous I find it kind of sad of all the haters out there , most of them who actually never ridden the PA or even a Harley . It's not about brand of bike you ride , it's about the ride . What ever bike works for you is good . I never rode or owned a motorcycle I didn't like and wish I would have kept them all . They all have different personalities

I’m a little late to this party but agree with the dealer debut. That seems to be on par with how they (dealers) handled the Buell years. I’ve owned many bikes and finally an HD (FLSL) but my riding is very dirt (road) oriented. Pan am would fit the bill but I’ve had a GS that excelled in that. I’m fortunate to have a few bikes that can do their intended “jobs”. Good on Harley for this bike, but now get the bricks and mortar to back them up. Accessories, if the MoCo can’t supply there are others that will.. cheers

Absolutely agree! More than that I feel like this line could save the company. We all know Harley riders are getting older. And a lot of us started riding in the dirt. Shrink the pan am down in size and in price, and watch the stock price and the market grow. Smaller dirt bikes are perfect for the electric mkt. They are missing the target a bit with the live wire in my opinion.

To begin, thanks for content. I am a new ADV rider, and your videos have offered absolutely fantastic guidance. As a relatively new street rider, the move to dirt/ADV riding has proven challenging, yet completely intoxicating. I am a Harley-Davidson enthusiast, having owned a few over the past five years. About eighteen months ago, I purchased a 2009 KLR650, and this bike has changed my life. Fast forward to a month ago, and I am trading in my 2019 Harley-Davidson FLHR on a 2021 Pan America Special. 1.5K in and it's a great bike. Some new model hiccups, but I think that is to be expected. I agree completely with you review/opinions. This is not a perfect bike, but it is more than I had expected. I had been weighing opinions with the GS, Africa Twin and T7, leaning towards the Honda, but my love for HD made me give it a shot. Unfortunately, we share similar concerns with longevity, but I am hoping for the best! Thanks again for the videos and quality advice, as it is greatly appreciated! Best wishes from PA!

I'm a second season rider with about 30K km under my belt, a couple of mild-ish crashes and I've even hit a deer (in my case it sounds a lot worse than it actually was). The Pan America looks like an amazing first entry for Harley into the ADV category...but I don't think its the bike for me, personally. Can I put in a request? I agree with you on HD needing to better compete with the Japanese middle weight Adventurer market for the reasons you explained, I personally consider the Pan America in its current form to be more a Sport Tourer than an Adventurer, Ground clearance limations for such a heavy bike will certainly limit your offroard riding to just gravel or dirt roads. I am bewildered at thier choice to place the rectifier and battery in thier current locations, also simple air filter changing looks pretty involved. The maintenance free Valve adjustment looks appealing and is a great idea but is offset by the yet to be discovered longevity of the high compression engine as you stated, but then again everything made today is engineered with planned obsolescence in mind. At that price point I personally will stick to the longevity and dependability of the Honda and Yamaha Adventurer options. HD has some catching up to do in the Adventurer arena but look forward to see what they do, if they decide to continue to play in that market.

Overall great video. Only problem I had was with the comparison of the compression ratios to a completely different class of ADV bikes. The PanAm's 13:1 ratio is comparable to the BMW 1250 GS's 12.5:1 and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure's 13.1:1. I agree with the concerns over accessibility to higher octane fuels in remote locations though, and what that looks like over the lifetime of a yet to be tested engine.

New starter clutch fixed the high compression on starts, all other issues have been fixed with software updates, aftermarket parts are plenty to make it perfect for selective riding positions, protection etc. including a quick shifter. Shorter riders must try the Special and the reach seat options.

I bought the base model Pan Am as I didn't really need many of the features of the Special as I ride it mostly on ride for touring. At 6'2" I also don't need the ARH to touch the ground when stopped but if I were to do it over again I would buy the Special with the ARH and then put on the accessory high seat that HD sells. The reason being is that I find the leg room right at the limit of what I find comfortable, if I were to put the high seat on I would no longer be able to comfortably reach the ground. I also find the stock seat to be a little too soft for long trips but that is likely due to my size - 245lbs - and a Corbin seat is in my very near future. I puzzle to understand why the rectifier/regulator is where it is but haven't had any issues with it yet so what do I know? Overall I'm very happy with my Pan Am after trying a few different bikes to replace my beloved 2009 Buell Ulysses. Ride safe out there.

@@RIDEAdventures In Canada the base model is $20,999, the Special is $24,199. Of course the ARH is only offered as an option on the Special due to the Semi-Active Suspension (the base model has regular suspension and is very good), the ARH is $1200. After taxes it comes out to $5060 plus another $800 for the spoked wheels should you want them. A pretty big hit but given all the extras that come with the Special it is actually probably a pretty good value.

Test rode one two days ago and it seems like a solid sports touring bike that you can take on some dirt if wanted. Closest competitor is the Multistrada IMO -- Negatives: Wasn't a huge fan of the engine sound (reminded me of a tractor), mirrors got a bit fuzzy under throttle, and breaking didn't seem as good as my Africa Twin.

Great review!! In the market for a Honda ATAS but also thinking a little bit on the PanAm, since I’m selling my 2019 Street Bob to finance my Adv bike. My cons are like yours. I feel that a lot of details like the rear brake cylinder feels misplaced, low quality feeling in the mirrors and plastics etc. and the small wheels. I have test rided it and it was a blast though, but only on road, haven’t tried it off road. But for a mix of on/off road maybe the Honda is a better choice?

Eric, I think this is a great review!! I believe you did a great job showcasing the pro's and con's of the PA. I also believe you did a great job keeping the topic focused on the PA and not muddying the waters with other manufactures spec's in comparison. That however leaves me with questions for you. How did the ground clearance feel compared to a GS? seeing how they are pretty close to each other. Did you ever feel like you would like to manually adjust the suspension? either for on road or off road? How did the weight feel compared to other bikes you've ridden in the middle weight class? The PA outweighs the middle weight bikes sure. Not by much when looking at the africa twin? The other's... by about 100 pounds. I can say that the PA feels much better off-road weight wise than my old XR650 and the PA is 100 pounds heavier. I do miss the ground clearance and suspension travel of the XR... LOL. The weight on the PA is very, very low. With the KTM super adventure R at 13.1:1 compression. How do they get around engine life and poor gas especially since they are so popular across the pond? KTM is known for service intervals but does that mean engine rebuilds? When you were on the hill climb and aborted it, was the traction control off? The voltage regulator is supposed to be hardened and able to take some hits. As far as the mounting location. That's not any different from any other Harley. They seem to have the units sealed pretty well from road grime. Would I put it there on an off road bike? No. I wouldn't put the battery there either to get hit. Or the oil filter way down low like it is.
@RIDEAdventures
@RIDEAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback! A couple of these questions about "feel" are pretty tough to answer, and the actual manufacturer ground clearance specs would be better than my suggesting any difference on. ----- We sure hope that Harley put good enough engine components in there to make the 13:1 compression ratio last a long time. Such a high price for a bike overall might indicate that parts of of high quality, but we don't know of anyone with a bunch of miles on the PA yet. ------- That Hillclimb: The Traction Control was actually "on" when I got stuck, and then let myself get flung off. We spent a bunch of time that day in the menu system trying to turn off the TC (like is necessary on a KTM) and even called the dealer to see if they knew how, only to then later notice that actual TC button on the right hand grip! Oh well :) Fun bike with a few flaws. Thanks for watching.
@schweiberholzfaller8597
@schweiberholzfaller8597 2 жыл бұрын
@@RIDEAdventures I appreciate the response. I agree that the bike has a few flaws. Not sure what motorcycle or car that doesn't. Seems every manufacture has some weak spots and as consumers we get to decide which ones we are willing to live with. I thought that the TC was probably what caused the hill climb oops. I did a couple short hill climbs and found out I had left it on when the rear tire would only slip for the most brief moments. It didn't cause me any grief as the hills I was on in those times were short enough to ride through it before loosing to much speed. After I posted my comment I started thinking. What should another person take from someone else's review? What I mean is...If riding is dynamic and is constantly changing to suit the environment. Both on road or off-road. Then That knowledge is limited to just that. You having the opportunity of riding several different bikes on the tours you offer or maybe even for fun. Is why I was asking for your opinion on the "feel" of the PA. I've never been on a 1290 Super Adventure R. I've never been on a BMW 1250 GS. Just looking for some point of perspective from someone who has.

@@schweiberholzfaller8597, all good, and thanks for checking with us. Yea, it's just hard to articulate by text what the 'feel' differences are, but generally: The KTM would be the most agile of the 3 bikes, then the BMW, and then the Harley. But given what you said, the dynamic nature of riding.....each of us might feel something different. Whatever the case, let's just have fun and ride, noting that the BEST adventure bike is the one you're sitting on right now : )

I have a somewhat stupid question. Lean angle, how does a bike figure that out? When you are going round a bend and leaning over, the lean is balancing the centripetal force with gravity, in equal measure. So you are pulled directly down into the seat. So a G force sensor wouldn’t know you were leaning over. If you see what I mean. (There isn’t a force making you feel like you are flying off the seat towards the outside of the bend, like in a car. The “centrifugal” force. ) Sure you may get pulled down into your seat harder around a corner, but that’s also true if you ride into a rising road section. So it can’t be that. Are there optical sensors that read the distance of the road surface out from each side of the bike? (Like a drone crash avoidance sensor.) I maybe missing a obvious answer to this, let me know.

Just wanted to add a comment. I am not in the market for ADV bikes I am too old and all that maybe if I had a 125 Honda and friends I could go with I would consider it. I would have liked to see you take it out in the mud and see how it handled. I know everybody is different but I saw another review about this bike and the guy had some real trouble with it. That guy was shorter and he was out in the dirt to see what it would do and like I said he had some real problems. I don't want to beat anybody up so I am only going to talk generally and I am sure folks can find those videos if they search on KZfaq. I think he really felt about the same as you did in most of his review but since you mentioned the kickstand he had the bike fall over because the dirt was soft and he got it stuck on the center stand later I think because the suspension lowered when he stopped on a hill. Anyhow great video be watching for more :)

Cars and motorcycles have recommended octane numbers. Manufacturers realize some countries do not offer 91 octane for maximum performance. Antiknock/dieseling are software covered with less performance noted with non optimal fuel numbers. Works the other way also. If you fueled 91 octane in a vehicle that requires only 87 no increase in performance as just wasting money. Multistrada V4, Super Adventure, Ducati Desert X all running higher compression for improved performance as engine designed from factory vs someone changing the compression from non factory specs by changing to different pistons to increase compression. VVT and forced induction could be seen more frequently in bikes similar to cars. Direct injection may not appear like cars because of the faster rpm’s bikes require.

They had to replace THE WHOLE ENGINE, it's not very modular. What if that happens when you are outside of your warranty? I'm guessing you might be looking at $5k or more.
