Great video- thank you. I noted one small discrepancy from your instruction and what the manual says. It is the 3/16” measurement between the edge of the spring cups and the spring tension plate. The manual states that the measurement should be made from the inner surface edge of the plate to the outer ridge of the cups.

Yes exactly! That is what I was saying in this video. From the surface of the spring cup to the inner surface of the pressure plate 3/16. I made that detail very clear especially at the end of the video in the closeup shot of my scale. Actually I went back to my video to confirm this dimension. I want to thank you watching and commenting. I really do appreciate it. I hope you follow along with me as I continue to dig in to this original time capsule. Next week I am getting into a different phase and hope you enjoy it. I hope you subscribe and continue to drop me a comment as I really enjoy and appreciate your support and input. Take care!

Good video. The Black 68 appears to have a 1971-1972 front forks and fender on. I'm assuming somebody wanted the new forks with fork seals and improved dampening rods. I'm putting 68-69 forks on my 72. 1968 to 1972 forks take the same fork tube, available in chrome or hard chrome. 1972 dampening rods fit the 68-69 fork tubes. I just prefer the 68-69 forks because of the fork boots and older style fender.

I have since then changed the front end to the original 1968 as it came from the factory. I used the upgraded fork dampers as well for a much better ride and also put the original front fender back on as well. I definitely recommend you upgrade as well on your Sportster. The stance is much better too. I really appreciate you sharing what you are doing on your bike. It’s nice to talk to people who are interested in vintage bikes and sharing information. I hope you subscribe and follow along as I go through my 1968 XLCH in coming videos. I really do appreciate your support and comments and I look forward to hearing how your progressing as well. Take care my friend!

@@Michael-st1hl I subscribed to you during the first video I watched, probably a good few weeks ago. I also put Progressive fork springs in the 68-69 forks.

Great easy to follow instructions. I have the 68 electric and kickstart version, have you done a clutch on that model? If so any tips or advice that differ from this kick only procedure? Thanks

@@GRACEORT Yes, I have replaced both clutch’s on my 1968 XLCH and my 1970 XLH. Both clutch’s are exactly the same in terms of design, function and the way you rebuild them and set the pressure plate. It makes no difference if you have both electric and kick start on your 1968 Sportster, replacing the clutch is exactly the same. They are a dry clutch design. Also, You really should look at my video, “How to fix the clutch hub wobble” as long as your going into your primary case to replace the clutch plates. It covers, fixing the common issue with clutch hub wobble, checking free length of clutch springs and pressure plate adjustment. Hope I answered your question. Take care!

I replaced the clutches on my '01 883 and '06 1200, because of the "grenade plates" I also used Barnett plates. The EVO design is quite a bit different than the Ironhead. I soaked the fiber plates in oil overnight before installing them. What holds the nuts in place? Never worked on an Ironhead before.

Yes for sure! These early iron heads run a dry clutch and if they get oil soaked they will won’t disengage. It first it will start creeping at stoplights and then it suddenly becomes FULLY engaged and you can’t stop the thing! I have a EVO Low Rider as well and love it! These EVOS are bulletproof. My iron head definitely requires more attention but it’s part of owning a vintage machine. I hope you subscribe and follow along as I progress on this bike and hit the open road down Route 66 this summer. I really appreciate your support and comment. Take care!

I don't know much about clutches, but I've seen some newer Sportsters, where they pre-soak the disc's in oil before installing, do you not have to do that with these?
@Michael-st1hl

These older iron heads are dry clutches from the factory, if they get oil on them they will not disengage! The newer models run wet clutches like you are referring to.

I don't believe you didn't soak the plates? As my grandmother would say what's a matter for you

This is a “dry clutch” design, all the early sixties sportsters came from the factory with the dry clutch setup like this. If they get oil on the friction plates the clutch won’t disengage! In fact I will put out a video on this very topic. Later on they went to a wet clutch like you’re referring to. I appreciate your feedback and watching! Your grandmother would approve i think! I hope you subscribe and follow along as I do some riding videos this summer. Take care!
