A brand new color film made from scratch in the UK from Harman Photo. My roll was scanned by Analogue Wonderlab using a Fuji SP3000. Results will be much warmer overall when using a Nortisu - see Hamish's review on 35mmc for Noritsu scans!!

Love the window reflection shot. It's definitely a film, you have to understand how to use to get good results - not a film for the average beginner, but that's fine.

I just got my first roll of Phoenix 200 in the mail. Will see what I shoot with it... I’m almost scared because a lot of stuff I shoot has strong natural contrast and I know this film doesn’t lend itself to that. :D But I LOVE what you pointed out about the colors: warm leans towards crazy warm, cool leans towards crazy cool. Very interesting stuff. I haven’t really made my mind up about it yet, but I think the fact that Harman has taken the financial risk to develop a new color film is enough reason to support them wholeheartedly! I’m totally rooting for them! Thanks for showing your examples and talking through them. =)

I just found your channel from The Old Camera Guy's community post. I agree it is great that Harman is investing in colour film, it looks great with some interesting results, I really love the cool grass with the vibrant orange leaves. I tend t shoot film as an occasional treat so something a little left field is of interest to me. Thanks for a great review.

From what I have seen it’s better to shoot Phoenix at a speed of 100 or 160 maximum. Great starting point film that needs supporting to grow Harman’s colour film type portfolio.

Interesting! A CN film with the latitude of slide film. My first observation is that it looks like lab scanners are *not* doing well with it. The scanner doesn't like the funny base color and as a result it exacerbates the contrast issue. That's just a guess, I didn't catch you mention if these were lab scans. I wish they would have just approached Fuji and partnered to produce one of their dead formulas. Harman gets an A+ for effort, C- for business sense. In terms of a unique offering as you mention, they could have revived a Fuji 1600 ISO CN film here or some other dead Fuji stock. This stock is entertaining and an amazing accomplishment, but it's one of those where folks will buy 1 or 2 rolls and never shoot again IMO. I'm sure they will evolve it, and we need all the stocks we can get. I expect just line Cinestill 800T, strapping on a promist 1/8 would likely knock down the halation quite a bit.
@Eclectachrome
@Eclectachrome 8 ай бұрын
yeah would be cool to see the effect with the promist on this film! I only had one roll to shoot and haven’t ordered more because I have so many other films to shoot lol but yeah I think it will take some time for labs to get a handle on how best to scan this film, these were lab scanned on a Fuji SP3000 by Analogue Wonderland who worked with Harman on the development of the release and the scanner settings. Fuji might charge a premium on rights for the formulas though lol probably less expensive the way they did it and then it’s their IP they own. Would be nice to see a higher ISO film in the future maybe but this is a good start!

it's a little bit similar like the Adox Color Mission 200, as i saw the samples from the previous video in your channel, but this film is more saturated & more contrasted, compare to current film sotck it's very individual in nowaday. And the halation of phoenix 200 looks so romatic when u take the picture becide the beach, or in the grove (i think it's looks like a greove 08:38 😆), and the price is quite sweet in taiwan's market when i saw in today 🥹🥹

I watched a ton of videos on KZfaq from those with early access to the film, plus some interview content with the Harman research engineers. From seeing a ton of results of different people, with different cameras and and hence different metering, and by taking what the Harman engineers stated in interviews, I do not think this film should be shot at ISO200. Harman engineers themselves stated that the technical, true ISO is something like ISO123.something. Most shots I have seen look underexposed at ISO200 even when metered correctly for the intended subject. I think I would shoot it at ISO125 and meter center weighted for whatever my subject is and accept blown highlights and clipped shadows in high contrast scenes - much like I shoot slide film. I got five rolls arriving next week, I will try ISO125, developed at box speed, I will shoot a decent amount of it with flash. Let's see how that turns out. That shot with the backlit trees came out really nice.
@Eclectachrome
@Eclectachrome 8 ай бұрын
thank you! I’ve done the same and I agree with you - if I shoot any more of this film, I would rate it for ISO 125 or around there. It was interesting to see some vloggers with more rolls than 1 experiment with pulling pushing, under and over exposure. Interesting when the scientists said it was ISO 120-something but they decided to rate for ISO 200 anyways. Would love to see your results if you want to share them when you have them back!

As a child I grew up shooting Agfa CT18 slide film (I blame my parents) , 50iso and very little lattitude, around a stop and a half if memory serves, so three and a half stops does not scare me. I am looking forward to taking delivery and getting it in studio. I hope they produce some 120, fingers crossed.

Ordered a couple of rolls to mess with. I think this one looks more promising than new lomo ‘92. But still no latitude is no fun. It’s already iso200 and not so much flexibility, but we’ll see 🤷🏼‍♀️ On the other note it’s great that brand new film is being made.

it depends on what you shoot, if you meter for the mid tones, you'll get more out of it, but yes the latitude is not very wide for Phoenix!

It really seems like the scanner used for your photos was not calibrated to scan this film, which would explain the skewed hues of the colors in your scans. This would explain the diverging warm-cool quality you discussed.
@Eclectachrome
@Eclectachrome 8 ай бұрын
This was scanned at Analogue Wonderland who is/was working directly with Harman on the scanning settings, which are still in the process of being refined. I think my colors are down to it being scanned on a Fuji SP3000 versus a Noritsu. The Noritsu scans are much more event and warmer toned over all.

@Eclectachrome

@ThingOfSome they do! It'd be interesting to see under everyone's results which scanner was used if it was lab scanned. I know most folks prefer the warmth of the Noritsu so perhaps not so many were scanned with a Fuji SP3000?

I appreciate the effort Harman did, making a new film … but … no latitude, strong grain, halation … I think, the situations, in which this film leads to great results, are very limited. It reminds me of the new Lomography ˋ92 film, which I found quite disappointing too. Honestly, I wish, there would be more something new, which is really on a high level, like an Ektar or Portra … and on a lower price then those. That would really shake the market.

Huh. Looks like a mix of an ultra-bargain bin 1980s film (or even Ilfocolor) with Provia 1600 for the grain and exposure latitude. Not sure that marketing this at that price without a HUGE experimental health warning is going to do a lot for Harman’s reputation. They should have iterated quite a few times before realeasing this. If I have to work with those constraints, and at that price, I’ll just go with E100. Disappointing after all the hype.
@Eclectachrome
@Eclectachrome 8 ай бұрын
Their marketing team does say several times it is an experimental film, it’s one of the first sentences in the technical data sheet too, so if you read everything they put out about it, they are clear, however this can often get lost in a lot of noise about the film online so some folks might miss how they set up the film to be perceived. It’s not going to be for everyone but I’m looking forward to future versions they create with more refining of the product and feedback from the market.
