close, torsional viberation is variation of rotational speed during each full rotation of the crankshaft. When one piston is on its power stroke the crankshaft speed near that crank throw increases. During other periods between power strokes the crankshaft slows down. In a multi cylinder engine the longer crankshaft can twist and spring back a tiny amount several times in each single rotation. A harmonic balancer dampens these rotational pulses so the crankshaft doesn't develop cracks over time leading to progressive failure of the crankshaft.

Hi, great video, I have a bmw e39 520d and the crankshaft pulley breacks after 300km I had it changed 3 times, with all the smaller rollers and it still brock agen. What can be the cause of that? Thx and best regards

hey man thank u so much for this video. i purchased a new balancer today for my 4.3 ltr gmc jimmy bc its starting to shake my truck on the highway now,its been throwing a random multiple misfire code. but i was beginning to have doubts bc theres so many things in that area that could be the culprit. also i can here it tapping like a metal on metal sound.but my point is u said when looking down at it engine running it wobbles and mine does. so thanks again man.also theres a sleeve assembly but the auto stores dont have it and don't know what its for which also makes me nervous.any idea what the sleeve assembley is for??

Tell me this. I am building a 383 chevy stroker. Got the long block together with the voodoo cam, double roller chain and 2 pc edelbrock timing cover. The engine is on a stand and rotates 360 degrees any direction but when i install the 400 balancer it only rotates less than 360 either direction and something locks up the engie so it wont turn any farther. Balancer been on and off twice and same problem.

You mentioned a vibration.Now is that only when the car is moving? I have a vibration at 1800rpm no matter what speed. Feel it more when the gas pedal is depressed and also when the car coasts (no gas pedal depressing) at 1800 rpm. could that be a harmonics balancer?

Im having mechanics take advantage of me in Albany NY every turn they can't bleeding me dry code p 0440 they replaced every part known to man and never fixed it I ended up fixing it myself it was a throttle body gasket replaced it and out went the engine light now oil leak every where 2005 pt cruiser non turbo touring I'm trying to find out it it's the crank shaft seal and harmonic balancer how can I know. Idle extremely rough. When driving seems fine but not powerful as it used to be.

How do you time the thing?! My son forgot to make a timing mark.

I have an 03 F150 with a 5.4 and it vibrates at idle pretty bad. Its not a misfire. I think it might be this.

I'm having the dealer change mine out on my 08 silverado. I think its whats causing my belt squeal.

my motor shakes during idle...i noticed the pulley on balancer and balancer has slight wobble... also my tensioner pulley on my chevy 4.3 is bouncing up and down... since theres no miss and just did everything else..new cap,rotor ,plugs wires,timing chain ,water pump etc....I wish i would have known it was bad when i replace timing chain and gears... but if this fixes my issue i won't be complaining..

have they been known to make a loud Cricket noise when bad I have a Jeep Wrangler it's wobbling and the seal is bulging out replace water pump and all pulleys and noise is still bad and getting worse could this be the culprit

I took mine off but cant installl because theres no center bolt hole to use a press.Every place i asked they say to hammer it on.

Harmonic balancers are good for engines without a lot of horsepower ,if your are pushing 500 hp and over you are better off getting a fluidampr or another type of performance Harmonic balancer that way you won't have any issues when they get old and that elastic polymer seal or gasket starts to break down ,

To put on a harmonic balancer,you need to boil it in water to 100c ,using gloves put it on the COLD crank shaft ! For a real harmonic balancer or damper !!! check out. fluidampr
