Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks, and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. Betty, you have been and continue to be an inspiration from the first time I found you online. I suspect one of the things that drew me to you was how you mix colours (as demonstrated here) on the fly - it's a unique approach to maximizing a limited palette which yields fantastic results. Personally, I have started keeping a journal of exercises exactly like this one and similar to your class sheets. When I need inspiration I can flip through it as a resource. Occasionally I even surprise myself -- "I made that?!" As always thank you for sharing your talent and creativity. ❤

I'm colorblind so mixing colors is hard for me 90% of the time, but since watching you mix the blues to make tints and shades of blue, I'm blown away by the fact that those new colors you are making seem brighter to me. I have some understanding of color theory, but have always disliked the process of coming up with the "mother" color. It seems too tedious for me. I just love playing with mixing harmonious colours. I remember the first time I heard the concept of harmonizing colours, then trying it, how amazed I was. Like you said, I could do this all day. It helps us learn about colours. And watching you use these particular colour groupings was delicious!

Good one, Betty. I love painting colour samples and enjoy several formats but yours is a new slant and I think it will be very helpful. I like the idea of a chart exploring only my warm hues together to find out what more complex colours I can come up with - then same with my cool hues. Making a chart of a particular palette (warms and cools) is OK but I inevitably find it can be exasperatingly incomplete because the combinations are endless. Thank you for this.

Yes I did the exercise, almost easier than using the Raw Umber Mother Color, but not sure how much paint to have on the brush. So, my combinations weren’t exactly like yours. You are the expert! Thankyou so much, I’ll keep trying this technique. ♥️Mary E from AZ

Thank you, Betty! Can you clarify if wiping off the brush after you dip it in water is what keeps the paint floating on top of the bristles OR is is just the fact that the brush is wet before dipping it into paint? Thank you for the clarification.

I have found that a wet/damp brush allow the paint to float on it and not stick to the bristles so much. I hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching!

Betty, can you link me to one of your videos that describes how you put your palet together that you put your paints on? I’m thinking it might be parchment paper but are you stapling it or just folding it down on a surface. I’ve bought your nova paints and really enjoy them. Appreciate all you do to share and instruct. You’re the Best!

Hi Debby! I don't have a video on how I created my palette. It's basically canvas board covered with 4 mil plastic. I tape it on the back side. I have several of these that I use. Super handy!

Hi Betty, I hope you haven't already been asked this question. But how do you achieve shades of green by mixing Alzarine Crimson Hue and Indian Yellow in your samples that you show at the end of the video. it normally makes a tint that contains blue. Does Alzarine crimson contain blue? Thanks for your answer. King regards

Great question, Valerie! I was also using black and white. I got the greens (I believe) by mixing Indian Yellow with Carbon Black. So fun!
