Join me today in planting an 'Autumn Brilliance' Serviceberry (Amelanchier x Grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance'). It's a great native addition to the garden, lovely for humans, and helpful for wildlife.

A beautiful serviceberry came with the 1958 house we moved into 20 years ago. My favorite tree! I noticed the shape is getting wonky high up because of all the shade from the other larger trees - a bit of stretching toward a spot of sun.

JENNY, that service berry should be a beautiful addition to your garden. I love shrubs and trees that provide food for the birds ! As usual so good to see you. Planning on getting a serviceberry.

Hello, I planted an Autumn Brilliance last fall. I noticed Cedar Apple Rust on it in this summer. I called my Master Gardners local extension and they gave me information on how to treat it (applying fungicide in the spring). They said they noticed more cases this year because of our wet spring. So, keep your eyes out for it next year. Good luck!!!

Hi Jenny! I hear you on the "some call it a weed" but I like it lol 😂 I have purslane that I allow in certain areas because it provides ground cover and tough as nails. Love seeing your videos!!

Service Berry is on my list. Hope to get a cutting from SIL. Sigh, deer-they can destroy stuff. We have to fence everything. And violets😂 well learning to love them would cut back a lot of work. I have liatris I put in too much shade also and they want sun. It’s amazing I found too much shade here, but our oak is getting bigger👏🏼👏🏼 Glad the heat dome of this week went back south. It was 109*😮. I so love irrigation we installed. I had to because we had extreme drought and I had had it with hand watering by July. It’s been wonderful and wish I hadn’t waited and it was so easy to do. Edit: we are getting the heat back this weekend to Tuesday 🥵. Crazy hot for us this time of year.

Good to see you sweet Jenny. Your yard is a lot like mine, not level and sometimes places with to much shade or to much sun in others. It is still beautiful. Love the dahlia's and the service berry.

We planted native serviceberries (Amelanchier canadensis), for its early flowering, fall color and to provide food for the birds. But unfortunately, here in New England, these trees are increasingly plagued with foliar diseases [being in the rose family] such as a kind of leaf spot - which leads to them to defoliate before their fall show unless these trees are managed... So, we are on the fence.... The nativar Autumn Brilliance does have some resistance that though... NB I am pretty sure you have junipers somewhere that means "rust" could become an issue --- so opening up the canopy will be critical IMHO... [Junipers and cedars act as a sort of go between...]

Yes, here in UK I planted an Amelanchier Paloma single trunk form as part of the late Queen's Jubilee tree planting scheme. I've lifted the crown already because it is close to a path but should be a very garden worthy addition, growing to only 12' -15' or so.

Serviceberry and soil looked on the dry side when you were planting? I have never added any fertilizer to trees, shrubs or perennials when I plant (no casualties so far ) but I sure do add water and soak that rootball before backfilling. Not your thing ? Thanks for all your videos and information, always enjoy Jenny 😊

I am amazed the deer have left the mahogany splendor and the dahlias alone! The deer decimated my mahogany splendor and I had deliberately planted it amongst foxgloves hoping it would be okay. I have to keep the dahlias in pots in semi shade just because that’s the only place I can block the deer from them. Isn’t it funny that deer in one area are so different than another? They do leave my viburnums alone but I remember they ate yours.

P. S. I planted an amelanchier about 6 years ago but I can’t remember which one and I am not able to get to that area anymore due to the hill.I don’t recall seeing any particularly nice fall colors ( I can see it from my living room window, I just can’t get to it) but then because it’s so dry here in the summer and I can’t water it, I usually miss out on fall colors.

Well, yes, the deer eat my viburnums. :-). the only things they haven't touched are the dahlias, mahogany splendor hibiscus, and mint-family things like Agastache. Everything else - at least nibbled, if not destroyed.

I planted 2 Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry tree forms two years ago, going on third. They are beautiful but they don't seem to be growing or filling out much. Do you know anything about the tree forms? Your bush form seems quite lush and full of leaves.

Hm, not sure. I tried planting serviceberries from small whips a few years ago, and they, too, didn't grow much. I bought this one as you see it in the video, nicely filled out. You might look into soil type requirements, nutrition needs, etc., to see if you can get yours to grow. Good luck!

I planted a serviceberry tree/ shrub this spring and it’s struggling . I’m hoping that I didn’t plant it too close to the walnut tree and the serviceberry isn’t going to bite the bullet.🌺💚🙃

If it is black walnut I would move the tree asap. Black walnut roots excrete substance to kill plants around it's base into the ground. A neighbour a few doors down has one and the squirrels go mental gathering the green unripened walnuts and burying them in my garden beds and planters! Ive got these trees sprout everywhere!
