A look at how I've been incorporating natural sunlight and weather into my emerald tree boa husbandry in both indoor and outdoor setups over the last few years.

I have been doing this my GTPs and ETBs for years...also multivitamin and Calcium powder supplement for esp breeding female GTPs. Eugen Bassett at least 3 decades ago had his ETBs in cages on rollers and would roll them outside for sun in central Florida.

I visited Eugene's facility as a teenager for the first time in 1995 and saw the old setups and he gave us an amazing experience, I remember he would also let them breed outside at night even as low as the 50's.

@nfri5108 Forgot to ask, so you have been keeping them indoors utilizing natural sunlight through the window in this same way?

very cool! I bought my first CBB ETB from Eugen so long ago I cant remember...he gave me the grand tour....He was one of the original groundbreaking breeders for sure! Did you get to visit Tony N, Rico, and Tom C also.....all were so impressive.....I never got to visit Eds facility though, what a shame...@@snakespirit2651

@@nfri5108 That's awesome you got your first emerald from Eugene! His place was so incredible to see especially at that young age. I've never met or visited any of the other emerald and chondro legends you mentioned, but hopefully will get to visit Ed someday if I'm lucky. I lucked out with some of my acrylic cages that are the same as the ones Ed and Tony used, they were built by Joe Polanco as I understand it. I bought them used a few years ago from a Craigslist ad from a guy named Dave Torro who said he bred emeralds and chondros way back and actually had sold Tony and Ed some of their early animals.

Cool setup. Florida seems sketchy for reptiles going forward.

Nice video, I think all keepers should move towards utilising full spectrum light for emeralds and chondros. A couple of thoughts: 1. Glass and certain plastics block some wavelengths of light, namely in the ultraviolet range. 2. It would be interesting to use a solar power meter e.g. the RS pro ISM400 to gain some solar power density readings when they are basking, and cross reference these readings to data from their natural habitat that can be found on the website global solar atlas. 3. Keepers that do not have the luxury of outdoor keeping due to the climate they live in can and in my opinion definitely should be implementing full spectrum light to replicate the sun in their indoor enclosures. This can be done by using a combination of lights, typically an incandescent/halogen bulb, T5 UV tube and LED/metal halide to produce a close to natural spectrum. The light of course needs to be provided in measured amounts however.

Glad you enjoyed the video! On your first point, that is one of the things I find interesting about the basking behavior of my females in these setups, that they readily utilize that sunlight despite it being filtered through both the window and the glass, acrylic, or polycarbonate walls of their enclosures. Also, although this sample size is not huge of course so it could just be a fluke, but the female in the video that was on the left in the large Sterilite tub had a pretty poor outcome litter compared to the others that have gestated in acrylic and polycarbonate tubs in the exact same area, and I've wondered if it might have been because of the difference in plastic in the Sterilite tub vs. acrylic, polycarbonate or glass enclosures. This year any gravid females kept in that room will be in acrylic, polycarbonate or glass enclosures.

That is a useful observation👍 the reason for this is reptiles are drawn to bask by the quality of the visible light in their environment, regardless of UV and infrared content. This has been demonstrated in studies by the likes of Roman Muryn using diurnal basking lizards and different combinations of lights. It is worth remembering that sunlight delivers UV, visible light and infrared as one package, so animals cannot pick and choose which wavelengths they bask in and haven’t evolved to do so.

There is a website called licht im terrarium (light in terrarium), it was created by a physicist and covers all aspects of lighting in a reptile specific context. It is a great resource to geek out on if you are interested :) although some of the translations are a bit dodgy as it is written in German.

I think water quality had a lot to do with liver and cancer and cancer in general. same with dogs

It's possible that was a factor, but she was also somewhere around 25+ years old. I'm not sure what the water quality was that the previous owner gave her, but if I had to guess it was probably tap water. The vet who performed the necropsy explained that cancers like she had tend to be genetic and when an animal lives long enough, it will eventually happen even with the best of care.

@@billsmith1998 Yeah I didn't take it that way, I had wondered too if there was anything in particular care wise that either that I or the previous owner had done wrong but it seems it was just old age.

@@billsmith1998 I agree, I'm using a mix of RO and part remineralized water for all of my neos and juveniles and moving to do the same for the adults as well. Currently I use tap water for the adults just out of laziness really, I should switch them all over as well.
