It's all well and good having the best air rifle kit for your field target shooting, but if you can't use it effectively, you've little chance of filling that trophy cabinet! In this week's Airpower Special episode of Team Wild's Academy, field target shooting legend Harold Rushton shows you his three key shooting positions, to help you get the best from your target shooting.

Thanks for that video. I am thinking of trying HFT and wanted to see someone show the positions. For new starters without all the butt hooks, knee risers and adjustability would you modify the positions considerably? Obviously some of the front hand holds would not be possible without the adjustable riser.

I realize that the point and title of this video was the positions, but I'd love to see more shooters know why he selected the equipment that he did. Everyone's commenting on that scope. Scopes with high zoom and wide objective lenses have narrow depth of field. When your depth of field is that narrow, you can be very precise with your objective adjustments. Knowing the adjustment used tells you what your target range is having to use laser range finders.

Its a disadvantage to some, most prefer palm shelf level or just below the trigger. Other disadvantage of palm shelf is it creates too much top heaviness amplified by dropping it down further.

Sorry to say that I'd rather see it without the knee rest. Seated and kneeling possitions are much harder to hold when using your elbow. But it is his choice and luxury.

You don't know what you're talking about. This is field target. Almost all high level FT competition shooters use 10-50x60 scopes (some even use 80x scopes. The world field target rules are that you must use a sub 12 foot pound airgun, almost exclusively .177, and you aren't allowed range finding equipment, and aren't allowed to know beforehand what the distance to the target is. Knowing the distance, especially with the furthest range targets, is absolutely critical to making the shot because of the very steep trajectory of the pellet. The 50x scopes are combined with a very large side focus wheel, which is used to range the target. Very high magnification means very narrow depth of field. The scope is focused in on known distances, and the side wheel is marked for that distance. These scopes, when set up correctly by an experienced shooter, can be accurate to with half a metre, but temperature can throw them off. Some shooters use multiple marks for different temperatures. The bigger the wheel, the better within reason. This is because the distance markings are not linear, they get closer and closer together as the distance increases, a small sidewheel doesn't work past a certain distance because the markings get so close together that they become useless. This is a very specialised shooting sport, and the gear reflects that. This guy has probably spent upwards of $10K on his rig, and everything has been selected for a reason.
