**CORRECTION** Pls read :) Hello all, it was brought to my attention that around the 10-minute mark, when I begin to discuss Martineau's health struggles and her essay "Life in the Sickroom", I mispronounced the word "invalid." The way I pronounced it in the video is the way the word is pronounced when meaning "not valid", whereas the pronunciation when referring to someone who is sickly or disabled is ˈin-və-ləd (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/invalid) It should also be noted that the term invalid in the context that was used in this video is not typically used today, and language such as "disabled people" is much more appropriate. I would therefore like to apologize for my usage of the word "invalid" outside of referencing the title of Martineau's work, and thank you to Prof. JDR for educating me on that.

I'm grateful for the correction. I've been taught to believe that the correct way to describe people with disabilities is to use "people" first. "People" is the noun. And we don't say "disabled people" for example. We say "people who have disabilities". The point is to emphasize that they are people. Disability/ different ability is a distant side effect on their essence as a person. People are people first. Their identity is never contigent on their challenges. I'm not even sure if that's right or pc. That's just what I've absorbed and am passing on.

I'm currently studying Sociology at UNSAM (Argentina) and we study her work in "Sociological Theories 1". I'm so glad my professors included hers and other women's works in their lectures

I have an awesome Intro to Sociology teacher who assigned some of Harriet Martineau’s work. He also mentioned that most sociologists don’t give her the credit she deserves. After his lecture I had to look her up and it led me to this video! Thoroughly enjoyed it ☺️
