We visited U.S. Naval Hospital Beaufort, South Carolina, the site of the Civil War Camp Saxton. Harriet Tubman served here as a spy, cook, laundress, nurse, and a recruiter for the U.S. Colored Troops. Hear the story here!

Enjoyed your story. My only issue was the statement about not expecting racism outside of the South. It’s alive and well all over this country, not just the South. It’s still a sad testament to America.

Well why stop with American? How about the whole world since the dawn of time. I wonder why that is?

I really love these stories. I have one for you, It is about Robert Smalls. He escaped to freedom with a boat load of slaves, from Charleston I think. He was born into slavery and later served in the USN

don't believe the HYPE! First off people use a little common sense! She was NOT a slave from Port Royal Island, aka Beaufort, she was from Maryland. She came in 1862, how did she have the time to do ALL these supposed things? HOW did she ever LEARN the area within 2 years to LEAD troops around "mines" in the Combahee river, FYI I live on the Combahee river for last 40 years, and lead "inland" raids? The South Carolina Military District KEPT the yankees contained to the two island till after Sherman SCORCHED EARTH march through the State! The "underground railroad" did NOT end in the northern States it ended in Canada. "freed slave" from up north were sent here as they were captive slave, along with the ones from surrounding areas were coming in also, AND leaving the islands was hard to do. So a lot of them were shipped South to remove them from the northern States. The South Carolina Troops, NOT at the time in the Confederate Armies service did a great job of keeping and eye on any yankee troops trying to go on raids! MORE raids were stopped by the Gallant troops of the State! So most of these "stories" are bogus when you look at them. Just like that Robert Smalls, he STOLE a private citizens boat and gave it to the yankees in Hilton Head. The Planter was NOT a Confederate ship OR a State own ship! The Planter was hired as a supply boat for the Charleston Harbor just like a tractor trailer rig today is hired by the feds to deliver supplies. SO moral of these stories is THINK and look into it yourself and you can debunk the propaganda with open eyes!

Interesting point of view that you have. One thing we can definitely agree on, historical stories can always be tuned into what a group wants them to be.
