Jake Butt, TE from Michigan was a very likely first rounder when he suffered a serious knee injury against FSU in the Orange Bowl. So he's an example. But I've seen players have big bowl games and increase their draft stock. I remember WR Mike Williams from USC had a huge game in the Rose Bowl in 2004 and made himself a near lock as a top 10 pick. So it could go both ways.

You are dead wrong about stars not getting injured in a bowl game. Willis McGahee was a top 20 pick projected in the 2003 draft and choice to play in the Fiesta Bowl for a national championship. Blew up his knee and it affected his NFL career despite making a success out of his career there. If he had not injured his leg he would have been one of the all time great backs but is lost to history as one of the decent RBs of that era.

FACTS, i was waiting for this comment. It does suck we wont get to see some of our favorite players who are obviously more talented than the back ups.. but think from a player perspective, not a fan. Maybe there are some seniors or juniors who dont touch the field all season. So that Olave can get his numbers and draft stuck up, and also because he’s better.. only situation where the less talented get to touch the field, is if big players opt out. Its weird thinking like that, but please try it. Imagine how much more the player who hasnt played all season, would appreciate being in the game, compared to a future first rounder, who has no interest in the bowl game. I hate seeing no effort on the field, so tbh if the player feels like they dont want to play, then it’ll translate, in the game, in their stats, body language ect… “Georgia lost because they weren’t motivated”, they lost to a texas team in a bowl game when they missed the CFP few years back, so yea guys.. if players minds are already thinkin about the nfl combine, and staying healthy so they can get a contract, i fully support it. Let the players that are hungry play, and the players who ate all season do they thing in preparation for the bag, you cant hate on them, Olave coulda easily dropped 10-15 passes in the rose bowl, 0 TD’s, and then he’d prolly down to a 4th round pick.. he knows he dont wanna play the rose bowl, he wants the CHIP. So why not let the stars of next szn, and the less talented players who never get game time PT, why not let them show their stuff and develop because they’ll be there the next szn.. unpopular opinion, but this is the way it is now, ppl want that bag, and that bag can easily be lost.. the chances are less than 50% Olave gets injured in the rose bowl, but the chances are there, its football, he has dreams, let the upcoming receivers get a big game so they can get use to the pressure, i think it’s ugly but beautiful, and i love hate it, its bitter sweet. Hopefully these players are taking each others playing time on field, into consideration, its obviously more about the money.. but they body, they choice. 2021 to some ppl is about the bag. So try to find a silver lining, because thats the way it is now. Us fans gotta make the best out of it.

I know harris likely won't respond to this cus it's lowkey a hot take, but if he sees this I want him to answer me this.. Why as a player would I risk my NFL career knowing i'm set to be a future NFL star and top draft pick to play a no good, does nothing for my already set image, participation trophy at the end of the season in a b*** s*** game set up by corporations just hoping to make a bit more money off my team playing? Even the new years 6 isn't in a good place until they can stop being college football playoff doormats as teams see them as nothing more than a participation trophy and hurdle to the game they actually care about. It doesn't make sense from a personal or long term economic stand point to play in a bowl game if you're going to the NFL draft, cus newsflash no ones idea of a player like Olave is gonna change if he plays great in a rose bowl when they already thought first round talent from him, so his stock can only go down. And for what? Tradition? That doesn't mean shit for his wallet long term. A rose bowl trophy that no one will give a duck about when he goes to the NFL and we judge his ability by what he does in the league? This is the dilemma facing players for bowl games, even the new years six, it's good for the player to skip it if they don't care for traditions or have their eyes on the long term, cus in 5 years their NFL stock will decide a lot about their opportunities, no one is gonna care what they did in the rose bowl or any other bowl for that matter. So answer me why with all that known would a top draft pick player play in a bowl game, when it makes literally zero sense for them to play in it?

I can really relate to that Michigan state vs Pitt game. I had a list of bowl games to watch and that one was on the top of the list, but now that most people going into the draft are not play the list has shortened. I feel like the ncaa needs a football March madness. So more players have a interest in bowl games and they still have a chance at the title, and so the same teams such as: Clemson, bama, Notre dame, Oklahoma, etc. don’t just keep getting to the playoffs. This would give little schools a chance and see how good team actually are.

I totally agree with you on all this. Saban warned everybody about this stuff too. I however think that if there is a playoff expansion, the problem will continue. Think about it. Right now if players don't make the playoff with the opportunity to win a ring after playing 15 games, they leave their college on 12-13 games played cause they don't want to get hurt or lose draft stock. Now expand the playoffs. Now the playoff teams are playing 17+ games. Think about the potential to be injured now. If they are complaining about 13 games they most certainly will complain about 17 games.

Truly at the end of the day it shouldn’t matter like if a player opts out he opts out it is what it is cause I mean especially with the case of Chris Olave he came back when he shouldn’t have so I have no gripe with him opting out we shouldn’t have even got this extra year and I don’t know if you can say it doesn’t have meaning cause in the case of Ohio State this is huge for our young guys to get reps in a hugeee game like the experience our young wide outs are gonna get in this game in basically a de facto road game cause Utah bought a majority of the tickets to the Rose and I think it brings so much fun to see a bit of the future in a big game

I think there is overwhelming agreement among fans that the best way to get more draft prospects to stay and play in bowls is to turn the bowl games into at least an 8 team playoff. An expanded playoff would sell more commercials, more merchandise, and more seats; so even from a monetary perspective it's more money to be made. I think it's just a matter of time until it happens

Bowl games should start offering large payouts to marquee players. Money talks and nowadays, you can go in the first round and not last more than a year or two in the league. I don’t think hustling players will say no to one major payday IMO. Raise your draft stock and get paid in the process.

Want bowls to matter? Want to fix these games? Have each team get a percentage of the payment with the winning team getting a bonus, as well as each team/school getting an additional bonus for how many tickets they sell. That way, the players get paid to play and are incentivized to play hard to get that win bonus. This will fix the bowl season opt outs.

The college football playoffs should be the top 25 teams in a march madness style system. The top 25 should be decided by how many wins the teams have. Period. Utsa was 11-1 and they weren’t top 25 which is ridiculous. This would give a better chance for possible upsets in the big playoff style system and more enjoyable games with more hype. The later playoff games like round 2-3 can all be bowl games and give teams more money the further they get to encourage success.

How to fix this problem.. when players decide to go to a certain college of their choice, they need to sign contracts, and those contracts are for all meetings, practices, all games, including any bowl game the team makes.. if you choose to opt out of the bowl game, you pay back the full scholarship you were given.. the full scholarship.. see, I think they do owe something to the school and their teammates.. because walking out on them in a bowl game is still walking out on them.. You know it has been said, there is no I in the word TEAM.. but its there hiding.. its in the A HOLE.. which makes you an A HOLE if you walk out on your team mates.. And the Transfer portal.. again, under the same contract, one can only enter the transfer portal after their season, after the bowl games.. doing so prior means you broke the contract and you pay back the entire scholarship.. these are what I call easy fixes.. when they sign that letter to come play. that letter is a contract.. which has certain stipulations in it.. now a player can break that contract.. we will not hold them to it by force.. but they pay back the entire scholarship if they break it.. which means all their tuition for going to College, all their education, they now have to go get a loan to pay for.. or use whatever money they can get for their name and or brand.. to pay it off.. but they must fully repay it..

Bowl games are great entertainment for the fans. For the players though, particularly those headed to the NFL, they're all risk and no reward. Why risk having a career-ending injury and lose out on potentially millions of dollars to play in a game that means nothing? A number of excellent points though. Sucks for us fans who want to see our best players in the games. It's an opportunity for players who didn't play much during the regular season. As a fan, maybe I should look at it as an opportunity to get a first look at some of those players.
