Although failing to qualify for the 110m hurdles Harrison Dillard had done enough already to compete in the men's 100m sprint at the London 1948 Olympic Games.
In the race, Dillard won gold in an incredibly tight photo-finish at the line.
Harrison Dillard began hurdling at the age of eight, running in an alley and using the springs from abandoned car seats as barriers. During 1947 and 1948, Dillard won 82 straight races. However, in the final of the 110m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic trials, he lost his stride and failed to finish.
Fortunately, he had already qualified in the 100m dash. At the Olympic Games in London in 1948, Dillard edged teammate Barney Ewell for the gold medal. He won a second gold medal in the 4x100m relay.

It's my understanding that Mr. Dillard, an NCAA and AAU champion high and low hurdler, failed to qualify for the 1948 team in the high hurdle event. I remember hearing that he fell down during his heat, and though he was the best hurdler in the world, did not qualify due to stringent US rules. Undaunted, he entered and qualified for the US in the 100 meter dash, where he subsequently won the Olympic gold medal. He went on to win his specialty in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, capturing the high hurdle gold medal. Counting 4 x 100 meter relay golds earned in 1948 and 1952, Mr. Dillard won 4 Olympic gold medals during his stellar career.

Superb footage from 1948, I was as interested in the crowd as the marvelous display of athletes. I have seen B/W footage of this before, but never colour.

I met the man at a high school track on Hough Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, ten years after that photo finish. He was quite a guy! Very helpful to a young budding track star. (In 1960 I clocked a 10.0 with a slight tail wind)

Though his name was never mentioned, and no, he didn't medal, but Basil McKenzie of Jamaica ran in the trials... He and his counterpart Lang, are the first Jamaicans to qualify for the Olympics in the 100 meters, and I'm proud to be his oldest Grandson.

Was sitting going down memory lane. Thought about this Great champion. He did what no one today has done yet. Willie Gault was to come the closest, but didn't. A true champion.

I read about Dillard years ago but never saw the race until today. This is great footage. How was he able to try out for the 100 meters since he specialized in the hurdles. Did he do any races during the year in that event or did he just ask to run the hundred? What a movie they could have made about him! Sounds like a perfect Disney-type athlete! An article I just read said he qualified in the dash the night before. Did he try out just for the heck of it?

it's crazy to watch the starts before they had the electronic pressure sensors. you can see guys twitching and almost going then settling, almost going then settling. sometimes the gun goes off when a guy is settling, and then his start is fucked. i think the electronic sensors take away from the mental aspect of racing.

Ewell did his victory dance at the end of the 100 metres final but the judges were not fooled. Ewell was declared a second place.

They said it was a photo finish but there was no photo. So hard to say if he won or not.

It was a photo finish there. Although there was no photo finish in many races in USA - that's why Ewell tried to do his victory dancing habit to fool the judges.

Barney Ewell went to Penn State I think and Mel Patton went to USC. Patton set the world record in the 100 yd dash at 9.3 and it stood from 1948 u til 1961 whence prank Budd of Villanova broke it at 9.2.

Not in the 100m, but it is illegal in the 200m. Although you would get disqualified for stepping on or over the line if it interfered with another racer in the 100m.

0:34 lane 6, isn't it illegal to step on the lane lines in track races? Maybe they didn't care about that back then? I remember that Wallace Spearmon got disqualified for that in the 2008 Beijing Olympics 200 meter final. Though maybe in 200 races it matters more since you can cut down the distance you need to run by running as close as you can to the inside lane line

I think after all the blood, sweat and tears-false starts should go bk to something like this-if a man reacts below 0.1-its a false start-i say its the perfect start-if it was -0.1...then yes false--but for athletes today, after 1 false start they go home-have to wait 4 yrs for another olympics-i think 1 false start-and i mean a minus 0.00001-in other words-before the gun-the athlete should be yellow carded-do it again and your going home-it sickened me to see linford christie in atlanta not able to take part and defend his barcelona title-he won his title at 9.96-although i remember him running 9.87secs-so to the man on the comment below-thomas frazier-did you ever run in any championships????-that time you posted then-would of won gold-am gonna google you!!!!!!!!!

FALSE starts are part of the 100m, they have to train to not predict the gun, but to react to the gun. The human mind can't react faster than 0.1 seconds, that is why the rule is as it is.

Agreed.The one false start and you're out was invented for television in order to shorten the broadcast time-very unfair to the athletes.
