His summary of what the BBC channels are now is spot on! BBC 2 is the new BBC1. BBC1 is the new itv. BBC4 is the new BBC2.I never thought of it like that but he is absolutely right. I will always support the BBC but have to admit the standard has gone down drastically in the last 10 years.

For those who point the mirror in Harry Hills direction, his position is clear: you might not like his shows, or anything else on commercial broadcast, but you don't pay for ITV. If a show is shit, it doesn't really matter to you. But the BBC, who are using your money, have a responsibility to spend it properly. Shows that will get poor ratings, and are not educational or somehow intrinsically valuable for anything but "entertainment", shouldn't get commissioned.
@brianm2881
@brianm2881 5 жыл бұрын
All TV channels are paid for by the people who watch them. It's just some are financed more directly than others. ITV is paid by the advertisers, who are in turn paid by the manufacturers/service providers, who are in turn paid by the consumer of the goods and services, so it really starts with the consumers' money. And the consumers pay double with ITV, because they're paying that money indirectly and also paying a little bit of their time each time an ad break comes on.
@Andrew-yl7lm
@Andrew-yl7lm 4 жыл бұрын
@@brianm2881 indirect is very very different to direct payments. Because we're forced to get a TV license to pay for BBC. If I own a TV and watch nothing the BBC puts out I'm still legally forced to pay for the programmes that it makes. If the BBCs content is so good then they should go with a subscription method, then we will have an accurate number for how many people willing would be pay to watch.
@RottingEarth
@RottingEarth 3 жыл бұрын
@@brianm2881 no they are not paid by the people who watch them. If cadbury's pay for advertisements then it was only cadbury's customers whose money has paid for the advertisement not everyone watching the TV when the cadbury's advert is on
@Jmcinally94
@Jmcinally94 Жыл бұрын
Codswallop. You personally might think a show has no value, just like Harry Hill does. But it might appeal to some people. If it gets low ratings and isn't being watched then it's fair enough to ax it. But the BBC doesn't have to make every single show educational. It's remit is to make content for EVERYONE, not just people who hate reality shows/what teenagers and young adults like. I don't personally listen to the Proms every year. It's rating/viewership ratings are incredibly low. Should they ban that because it doesn't seem valuable to me? It was bad enough that they got rid of the channel entirely for a bit, considering how many landmark new comedies came off the back of innovation allowed on it. But for those who complain about the license fee, there will always be something to prove it's not worth paying for.

BBC Two is a total joke now in 2018. A channel which launched in 1964 to be the home of culture and high brow programming is now a repeat channel for lifestyle shows shown on BBC One. Look at their breakfast schedule on a typical weekday. It is truly appalling. From 6.00am-9.00am it is re-runs of lifestyle shows. It is a channel which does not know what it is anymore.

The obvious benefit with having a TV license is that the BBC can make TV shows without having to defer to the whims of advertisers nor have commercial breaks that interrupt their shows. However, because it is a TV license rather than simply a subscription to BBC shows, it means that people are forced to pay for the BBC even if the shows they are making aren't any good, and you can't not pay for it unless you accept not having a TV. Whereas with HBO in America, you can judge whether or not you like the shows and then pay for it and get it and as soon as you dislike it, you can cancel it and continue to watch other TV shows.
@geekymarianne
@geekymarianne 10 жыл бұрын
It's not really so much of an issue anymore, though. All you need a TV licence for is watching (or recording) shows *live off the air.* You don't need one to watch shows on iPlayer (or other channel's equivalents), and most TV shows are put up on iPlayer or similar very soon after they've aired. You also don't need one to own a TV. So not having a TV licence will only mildly inconvenience you, or not even do so at all if you don't watch live TV anyway (as many people no longer do), it certainly doesn't prevent you from watching TV shows in modern times.

In theory that's a good idea, but when we all pay for the BBC just by owning a television at all then they're really under more scrutiny. As much as I'd love to have 4 whole channels dedicated to avant-guarde literature or bizarre documentaries about obscure musical genres, the fact is that they has to make programs that the majority of people will actually watch in order to justify the licence fee. Maybe the problem is that Freaky Eaters or even Strictly C.D. seem insincere in their populism.

Before watching this, I thought, “Oh god, Harry Hill is just another cringeworthy washed up slapstick comedian from the 90’s...”, but after seeing him out of character like this, I kinda like him with a bit of an edge. I think the fact that he was talking shit on the BBC even intimidated the host as he wasn’t sure how far he was going with it. I would really love to see an after 9 comedy show where Hill lets out his more ‘edgy’ humorous side, it would be a refreshing contrast to his outdated style of comedy we see in shite like “Alien Fun Capsule” or whatever the fuck kind of mess that is...

I completely agree with Harry Hill here about the state of BBC programming. I used to get seriously pissed off with Three repeating shit programmes twice a night every night. But I stopped paying the licence fee quite some time ago in protest, partly for that reason. Ironically though, I haven't heard Mr Hill complaining about the dumbing-down of TV recently. At least, not since he started happily accepting repeat fees for ITV showing up to 12 year old episodes of his culturally enriching version of You've Been Framed twice a day, 6 days a week.

I mean he wasn't wrong, BBC 3 was the biggest waste of space. There were a few gems but they could have easily been swooped across to BBC 2. Sure enough a few years after this interview they stopped it.

There's a demand within public institutions for continual expansion in a similar way as with private sector companies, driven by the personal ambition of management. They are not content to just do a good, necessary job that pays well; they want continual pay-raises, more staff and more 'market' dominance. It makes them feel important or something. The BBC should be UTILITARIAN; it should not be chasing ratings. At all.

@jaryd12345 That's the only thing Harry Hill didn't ridicule. It's true every 'documentary' on there is like a Jeremy Kyle nightmare.

Simple solution. Don't watch live tv, which means you don't have to pay a tv licence and then just either stream everything, or/and just spend the money you'd usually spend on tv licencing on physical media.
