Harry HORLICK was the conductor of one of early American radio's most popular salon orchestras, largely due to his regular appearances on the long-running "A & P Gypsies" show from 1924 to 1936. Born in 1896, in Tiflis, Russia, Horlick remained in Russia when his family left for America at the beginning on World War I, and he became a prisoner of war. His family and the American consul helped him get to the United States where he performed in cafés in the early 1920s. Horlick's six-piece ensemble was playing unsponsored on New York's WEAF in the winter of 1923 when they were seen by a Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company executive who was taking a tour of the radio studio. The band -= now holding the name A & P Gypsies, began regular broadcasts, sponsored by A&P, on Monday nights, beginning March 17, 1924, with the opening theme of "Two Guitars. The host and band leader Harry Horlick had learned gypsy folk music while traveling with gypsy bands in Constantinople. The musicians performed while wearing gypsy costumes.
From 1924 into the 1930s they were the most popular instrumental music program on the air. In 1933, A&P took part in the World's Fair in Chicago with a canopied boardwalk where tea dances were held, and free tea and coffee samples were distributed.
Horlick died July, 1970.

You are absolutely correct. Some of the great names of that era -- J.C. Penney comes to mind -- made changes and are still going strong today. Others, like A&P, did not change with the times and wound up being eaten alive by Wal-Mart and others. All we have to remind us of the A&P chain is the great music of Harry Horlick and the A&P Gypsies. At least we have that and it is a very fine legacy indeed.

In the 40s, 50 and 60s, many small town radio stations depended on the RCA Thesaurus service, which supplied huge disks with a wide range of musical types. This was in the days when stations did block programming with a half hour of dance music, 15 minutes of Hawaiian, etc. I grew up listening to Harry Horlick music from this service, which was the backbone of music programming before the high intensity promotion of later years. Most of small town America knew Horlick well.

What a great resource 'KZfaq' is! I recently, get this, came across a huge cache of records (with sleeves, cases, etc.) of many many old era artists like, and including Harry Horlick! Someone left boxes upon boxes of these records curbside for garbage collection! Lucky I was walking my dog that night and had a flashlight. I bolted home that night and parked my VW in front of that house and had to make 3 trips to load all those records. My garage is now a museum of classic records!

You're so right. "KZfaq" is a great resource. I'm also grateful to have the internet. I was reading a book by Susan Wittig Albert set in 1930. One of the characters was listening to the A&P Gypsies and Frank Parker. Out of curiosity, I decided to look them up. I found them right away on KZfaq. Now, I'm reading the book and playing the music in the background.

Now it's almost obvious why Woody Allen references the A&P Gypsies in "Sleeper"! This group is so smooth! Allen's obsession with 'old-time' music and his fine clarinet playing say it all as well.

One of the great dance orchestras that have been forgotten, I believe because the recordings are so rare. Harold Lambert did an excellent vocal.

Quite a surprise! So that's where my gypsy aunts have been hanging out--in the old A&P right by the coffee section (8 O'clock was one of the brands, I recall). But where I live all the A&P's are gone. If there are any left in America, please let me know, dear YT friends.

It also happened to Cliff "Ukelele Ike" Edwards, aka Jiminy Cricket, too. Many performers died broke and saw no reward apparently. BTW I love the description salon orchestra.

This great record is actually a Bob Haring band, based on the style and a bit of research...possibly the Colonial Club Orch.

Jean Shepherd made a reference to the A&P Gypsies in one of his stories. Good to hear how they actually sounded. If you like this, try out anything to James Melton. He had pipes an ordinary singer would sell his soul for.

It is ironic that Harry Horlick died, as his grandnephew said, "pratically broke". Horlick's ultimate employer, George Huntington Hartford II, was heir to the A&P fortune estimated in 1975 at $2.6 billion -- 16,000 A&P Supermarkets -- then largest retail empire in the world. Hartford died in 2008 at his Bahamas estate at 97, fortune mostly intact. As we enjoy the great musical legacy Horlick left us, let us consider how relatively little he and other great musicians received for their efforts.

I find your statement about your great uncle quite saddening. I say that because he obviously did a lot of great recording and his records were very well known throughout the United States through the RCA syndication service used so much by small town radio stations. It is sad that a man who produced such great music for so long should wind up as you describe his later years. What a pity! Of course, it has to be said that many of the great band leaders wound up in the same situation.
