Charted at #3 in August 1901. Even earlier recordings were made by George J. Gaskin and Jere Mahoney. J.W. Myers also recorded the song in 1901, and Perry Como had a hit with a remake in 1947. Also recorded by Al Jolson and the Mills Brothers in 1947. Written by James Thornton and first published in 1898.

Respect is not inborn right, respect is earned and deserved, that's what most people can't get. This rendition is from 1901, but the song itself was written and published in 1898 by James Thornton.

Although i've never heard this charming 125-year-old song before, i've seen the title of it mentioned in literature. Also there are other songs about a girl who was "sweet sixteen". My late mother used to recite a rhyme that went "Sweet sixteen and hard to get. Never been kissed by a pretty boy yet". Maybe that was part of a song.

Very early recording of this iconic song, although i prefer Al Jolsons gorgeous rendition recorded on Decca in 1947, this is a very interesting version too.
