I love doing freestyles based on random words and visuals, but recently I’ve been feeling a strong yearning in my soul to just throw some dope beats on and go off-top without any structure or limitations. I finally carved out some time to do just that, and it felt GOOD. The result is this mini 3-track EP called Rap Coltrane. Nothing was written or planned out ahead of time- everything is completely improvised in the moment off the top of the dome, just the way I like it. I hope y’all enjoy 🙏🏻
John Coltrane has long been one of my all-time favorite musicians. He was such an improvisational force of nature- always fearlessly pushing the boundary of what was possible on his instrument and in his genre. He changed the game irreversibly for saxophonists and jazz improvisers of all kinds. As someone who’s passionate about elevating the craft of freestyle rapping and taking it to places it’s never been before, I find endless inspiration in looking to legends like Coltrane, Rakim, J Dilla… the ones who made such an undeniable mark on music that nothing could ever be the same again.
There’s this one live recording where the last song ends, and you can hear Trane continuing to play through an exercise AS HE’S EXITING THE STAGE! He had just poured his heart out in front of an audience for however long, and he still wasn’t ready to put the horn away- there was always more discovery to be done. I remember hearing that and thinking “damn, this guy is obsessed with practicing too! Maybe I’m not crazy!” Or maybe I am, and maybe that’s ok.

We definitely need to address it, Harry might be the best rapper alive. He’s got it all: schemes, bars, flows, multi-syllable rhymes, choppy double times, taking words or things he sees and making bars out of it. All of this off top, he’s just different. There’s a lot of great free styling rappers, but HMack is way ahead of them

This is a scarce. It's night and I'm listening to this on a backseat of a bus with my headphones. There's fog everywhere and it's raining heavily and the pouring water just adds to it. Very well said. Agree on all points. At this point, what he can do shouldn't even surprise anyone anymore. It's almost easy to take for granted how well he's sharpened his skills. Yet somehow, he just keeps getting better. The best underground examples of real hip hop never have or will get the shine they deserve though and Mack is no different in that regard. Realistically though, it isn't a stretch to say that this guy might be the best true freestyler of all time. For a long time I was trying to decide who was better between him and King Los. Both deserve spots in the hop hop hall of fame. But overall I have to say, Harry Mack takes the crown.

I was just trying to say something similar as the original comment only in rap form. In retrospect after coming back wondering why the hate was coming at me, I realized “oh damn”, that does sound like I’m hating on Harry. Nothing could be further from the truth. These freestyles are absolutely brilliant and undoubtedly some of his best work. I’m am in awe of his talent and his character and integrity. Anyone that would dare to throw negativity in Harry’s direction would be deserving of those comments (the poop emoji was a little overboard…lol).

The first time you watch him you're like "How is he doing that? How is that possible??" after some time you'll get used to it, but you'll understand it in a different way, you'll listen closer to the lyrics, the flow, the rhymes, and literally everything you didn't use to care about, cuz you're not surprised anymore, you're appreciating it and understanding it more

i feel like people who haven't dived into freestyle art (rap, dance, drawing etc) don't understand how insane this is. it's like he's dived into a different dimension, The Flow dimension, which is an unstable place for most artists. It's normally something you slip in and out of. it's a balance between letting go of yourself to enter it more fully, and at the same time directing your will on it. Yet Harry has somehow managed to not only enter The Flow for long periods of time (10+ hours non stop freestyling), he is also able to hone the shape of it with this much control. i'm not even able to fully express how blown away i am by this EP. i honestly didn't know doing something like this was physically possible. it's equivalent to someone composing an entire orchestral piece, complete with double or triple layers of meaning, dynamics, and harmony, but doing it on the fly.
