Just out of curiosity. Rather than turning the races to fit the rod, would it be ok to hone the rod the .003 / .004 to fit the race ? Which would be easier for the shade tree mechanic ? Lol

Theoretically you could, if you had a Sunnen honing machine. Using a small hand held hone (like a brake cylinder hone) it would be almost impossible to make sure you didn't bell mouth the rods. Also theoretically, a guy could fixture them to a faceplate on a lathe, but the set up would be a PIA. I suppose you could also fixture them on a mill and bore them a little, also the set up would be a PIA. Then again a shade tree mechanic isn't going to have a Sunnen honing machine, a mill or a lathe...
