I love her: "What are you an idiot?" XD I doubt that the explanation is: It was all a dream. This is always the lamest of all explanations, and nowhere are we ever given any indication that this is not just a show with supernatural elements. with your explanation our main character would just dream up the hole show, even tho the S.O.S brigade members know and mention the happenings all the time. It is of corse vaguely possible, but it is like saying: the lord of the rings was just a story frodo made up for his book.

I always assumed that the main character is Azathoth, not Haruhi. Haruhi is a way to distract the real god from realising who he is, to make him believe something else is the god so there's no way he himself could be it. And all of these different events and things are their way of entertaining the god, of keeping him distracted and feeling fulfilled so he will not awaken to the truth and consider erasing everything. If the god becomes attached to the world he has partaken in, surely it will stay then. This is just the fantheory I've always had. It's probably not true, I haven't even followed the series that much outside of seeing the movie.

This probably wasn't the first appearance of the word Moe in an anime script, but I recall it being one of the earlier prominent ones. Moe provides a good example of the lifecycle of an anime term where you could watch it go from first being used only by Japanese fans when discussing anime, then used by western fans discussing anime, then being used in anime itself, then being overused in anime itself, then finally becoming less used by the fans who originally created it to the point where it now tends to feel either ironic or retro and almost needs quotes around it again.

It's a spinoff by a different writer (Puyo, who also The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya manga series & The Intrigues of Itsuki Koizumi-kun); originally a manga. The anime adaptation supposedly only captures the first half, and is very fanservice-heavy in a way I personally found off-putting as a viewer; but YMMV. I was always kind of of the opinion that taking out the supernatural aspects and sanding down the characters' rough edges the way that series did ruins it, but some people are into it.@@shiroberry

Certainly the case has been made that kyon is just hallucinating some of this stuff, or everyone is slightly delusional in different ways. However, I think its a pretty weak argument to basically have no answer to time travel, and have no better explanation for endless eight than a shared delusion or dream state for everyone. I mean I really think this qualifies as a head canon, which is provably wrong without ignoring major details. This is not an uninteresting head canon, but considering its before inception and chunnibyou, and before isekais were super popular, the idea the light novels, or even just kyoani's adaptation of them, is hung upon assuming anybody would rationally assume this, does not seem plausible. Granted, this is the same kyoani that decided to make endless 8, and for the record it did get them a lot of hate back in the day. It took years, and a really well made movie, for this shows rep to recover from endless eight. Honestly, I clicked on this thinking it was going to be the old classic theory that KYON is the actual god, he just subconsciously makes girls who appeal to him and give his mind a reasonable scenario to experience this kind of hijinks as a normal person. This theory is considered stronger in light of later unadapted to anime chapters of the LN, where another girl kyon once liked might also be a god, or perhaps used to be. This also brings up the obvious problem with the theory presented here; its not what is demonstrably true in the light novel and manga adaptation, it would have to be something kyoani was doing. Because the time travel is repeatedly proven in the original and its manga adaptation, and its connection to haruhi is explained in depth. To some extent, situations were presented as if they might be taken as a dream at times, except details prove this could not be true without multiple people having the dream. Kyon and Haruhi cannot have both had the same dream, but kyon is the narrator and haruhi chose to wear her hair in a ponytail. This means they both experienced something, or its a massive coincidence, which would be terrible writing to not at least imply if the latter were meant to be true. I know there are far more important examples in the LN, but I will leave it at this because why spoil things for others.

yeah, I think I leaned to far into the "sleep = not actually happening" thing, when I more so feel like this is an anime about active imaginations. I think a lot of this can be explained as someone in the group being like "this weird thing happened" and they end up explaining it as super natural. I also feel like Haruhi is the one in the group who may be the most rational so when they tell her she doesn't really "play their game" so to say. so for the time traveling bits, the one I'm thinking about right now I'm not sure of the exact situation. When I watched it I didn't have this theory yet but im sure its explainable. as for the older haruhi i feel like she just put on some make up and high heels but if you feel like time traveling breaks the theory thats fair. I didn't really fully consider time travel when i was trying to remember the particularly big points. as for the ponytail thing: in the first ep it says she wears her hair all sorts of ways and she also wears it that way while shooting their movie i think, so i personally dont think its that crazy if it pushes the narrative. but yeah after that happens he talks to Itski about it and it cuts out him explaining what happened and just has itski telling him it was because haruhi is a god/closed space ext. if i remember right

@@shiroberry I think the points presented are well argued for definitely. I actually sort of like the idea that everyone but haruhi is just being a bit chuunibyou despite their ages. Considering this series has several alternate universe like versions, where different basic facts about the setting apply, this could easily have been one. Compared to the nagatoro focused one, it would certainly be a lot more interesting to have haruhi be the agent scully to a brigade full of moulders hell bent on wild speculation of this sort. I would watch or read that.

This is a genuinely fascinating perspective to me, as someone who read the books. The supernatural aspects aren't the core of the series imo, but I've always felt that they are still integral to it: the core, to me, is the relationship (platonic or otherwise) between Kyon and Haruhi. The books, especially the ones post-Disappearance (which is about half of them) really start to emphasize that. I don't think I can buy into this theory, but if you ever read the original light novels, I wonder what sort of explanation you'd come up with for the plots of those. Especially Intrigues and Surprise. Describing Yuki as just being autistic is interesting to me, though; in that the entire SOS Brigade scans to me as a very autistic friend group. Yuki is the most 'stereotypically autistic' person, yeah, but Haruhi, Kyon, Koizumi, and Mikuru all strike me as very easily read as autistic as well (and autistic Haruhi is decently common as a fan theory already).

Also, Endless Eight WAS very poorly received as it aired: Red Bard has a really good video about the phenomenon and how it contributed to tanking the series' reputation overall! For years, Haruhi was everywhere, and a combination of factors (including Endless Eight) led to it fading pretty quickly from mainstream relevance. Additionally, I've heard from people who were there at the time of it originally airing that the 'moe' stuff was initially intended as a parody of the concept (and it's a lot less visually explicit in the light novels; though I can't vouch for any of the manga because I haven't finished any of them). It wasn't the best execution regardless, but it also REALLY hasn't aged well, considering that fanservice in anime has definitely NOT improved over the years.
@XvXHaruhiSuzumiyaXvX

That said, the thing with the light novels is that almost everything about everything is open to interpretation. Kyon is explicitly an unreliable narrator, and we never see first-person accounts from the rest of the characters (bar one authorized short story by another author from Koizumi's POV), who are likewise untrustworthy. You have to read between the lines and infer a lot of things, which leads to vastly different interpretations from person to person.

Its a fun theory and obviously not meant to be taken seriously but also maybe because this story was still quite fresh for you when you made this video but i think you've kinda missed the point a bit. First off the reason Kyon was "chosen" is not because of the bonds he has with the brigade or even a dream scenario (even in the light ovel at the end he mentions how he doesnt know how he feels about Haruhi because well he only just met her and the gang) it's as simple as the fact that it was his wish. Once you realise this entire story literally is Kyon's story through and through does it piece together. The anime and even the light novel (inc the ones after Dissappearance) don't really take the time to give intensive credence to the supernatural aspects. In fantasy terms i'd guess you'd call it soft worldbuilding. The story doesn't bother with the literals or coming up with an elaborate reason to explain every little thing. Rather it's kind of a post modern pastiche of various genre's and creates a simulacrum world in which all these stories, genres and concepts coexist in a bizarre surrealist way that really shouldn't work or doesn't make sense. Even something like the Data Overmind thought entity is super elusive and undefined in it's existence and conceptualisation. The priority with soft worldbuilding stories is the thematic undertones and messages it tries to convey. Haruhi within the thematic viewpoint is essentially a manifestation of Kyon's existential desire to live an interesting and fun life. Through Haruhi comes characters like Koizumi, the smooth talking esper who is sort of like the dungeon master. He's always there to come up with ways to keep Suzumiya and by extension Kyon entertained. Yuki is the deus ex machina there to quickly save things and end the narrative beat as soon as Suzumiya gets bored. And poor old Mikuru is our fanserive (you kinda hit the nail on the head there). Even Haruhi mentions she carefully picked them to create her own bizzare simulacrum, she is quite literally playing the role of God and perfectly constructing a fun slice of life supernatural anime story that Kyon gets to be apart of. The problem is once you start trying to make sense of all the literals and wider nonsensical shenanigans this story gets up to you begin to lose the whole point of the stories message. The dream theory pretty much revokes all the metatextual undertones the series is trying to get across and instead paints the narrative as one of schizophrenia and delusion which doesn't fit at all for the series. There are fun theories out there like Kyon being God which both helps fit some holes and also maintains the narratives overall message. Sorry for the long message dont wanna sound like a weirdo tryna lecture what is otherwise a funny light hearted theory but i just needed to point out that its kind of a fundamental misunderstanding of the narrative.

Gotta be the most condescending first sentence to a comment I’ve read 😭 I’m not mad at it but damn!.. I should clear up something that I didn’t adress well enough in the video tho. I don’t think everything boils down to dream stuff. I think a lot of it has dreams mixed into reality but i would say the anime is more so about a group of friends with a lively imagination and like you said they want to live an interesting life so they make up little roles to match each persons personalities. I’m glad you came to your conclusion about things and you seem very passionate about it, that’s great and I’m happy for you! Also I’m glad you agree about the cringe fan service stuff I’ve had people tell me to stop watching anime as a whole because of my comments in this video

@@shiroberry ah my bad genuinely didn't mean to come across as condescending cause I actually think your theory is fun but yh I was kinda hoping in the video you'd link it back to how it fits in with the series themes and message to help give it credence. Also nothing wrong with calling out cringe fan service 90% of the time it's handled poorly and anime as a medium is better off without it. Don't bother with those basement dwellers telling you otherwise.

Well, this is very presumptuous and meta analytical, but they way some things are done and characters are written tends to hint at another theory, which is a lot more interesting, so "everything is a dream" is pretty low on my list of likelihood. From what I remember the show goes out of it's way to be explicitly ambiguous, or signify that this is Kyon's world, not Haruhi's. Or another theory is that Kyon and Haruhi are both gods, or part of some whole, and they balance each other out. Some points where it could be either harhuhi/kyon controlling what happens: - Kyon is the one who's bored are made haruhi to bring excitement to his life. - Kyon restricts himself with his beliefs and ideals but uses haruhi as an outlet to do things he can't. This is all the abuse and harassment towards Asahina. Although he always stops her when she goes too far, he enjoys it as well. - Kyon realizes that he was the one who killed the man in remote island syndrome at the same moment haruhi did, so it could be either one of them who "rewrote" the scenario. - Endless 8 was hinging on Kyon not wanting to do his homework. It was Kyon who couldn't move on. Despite the bad rep I think endless 8 has good character moments (character development even?) for yuki and kyon. Koizumi mentions he doesn't have "a certain something" to be a partner for haruhi. - Yuki and the thought entity, defer to and protect kyon on multiple occasions despite him being seemingly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. - There's also a scene from the episode that's the movie they make where yuki and koizumi have a conversation that goes something like "choose me and evolve the universe or have no future by choosing her" and kyon remarks if she's really talking to koizumi or someone else. - Just the whole arc with sasaki. Some dude pulled a George Henry Shaft and wrote a twenty page essay on it. Google "The Melancholy of Kyon" (gwern dot net slash kyon) if you wanna check it out. The TVTropes page on it is also a good read.
@BrightHelix
@BrightHelix 8 ай бұрын
No offense, but this is just "Pokemon is a coma dream"-tier fan theorizing, and it's not only narratively unsatisfying but deeply unsupported by the text. Like... I think the first big hole in your theory is that it's not Kyon that puts these characters into their supernatural roles (he would, in fact, prefer that they WEREN'T supernatural in the beginning), but the other brigade members who inform and then demonstrate to Kyon their true nature, and once they do, they begin to talk among themselves as if these things are true whenever Haruhi isn't listening. Hell, one of the first hints towards the supernatural in the story is Mikuru dropping the phrase "time plane" into conversation without prompting before anyone had revealed their identity to Kyon. Your theory also doesn't seem to account for the other aliens, time travelers, and ESPers we meet at all. Another thing, you say that the Closed Space incident with Haruhi and Kyon is never brought up again, but it very much is! After that, Mikuru is reluctant to get close to Kyon because she fears it will cause it to happen again (as she, correctly I believe, thinks that the trigger for the event was Haruhi seeing her and Kyon being too up close and friendly while she was trying to see the Mikuru folder), as well as the times Haruhi puts her hair up into a ponytail afterwards (the direct next day, and while they weren't talking after Kyon blew up at her about how the movie production was going, right before he apologized). (Edit: Also at one point, I forget where, either during the baseball tournament or the student film?, Itsuki taunts Kyon about calming Haruhi down like he did during the Closed Space.) Sorry for the essay here, but I managed to catch this video right as I was re-reading the series (just finished Boredom and am about to start Disappearance) and I can't help but feel like rather than actually engaging with the questions the series presents, you picked an interpretation to side-step all of it.
@shiroberry
@shiroberry 8 ай бұрын
I disagree with you on a lot here but I'm glad you watched and commented cuz I did want to clear some of this up and felt like I didn't do too well in the video. first I think I went to far into the "sleep = didn't happen" type thing when I think a lot of it was very active teenage imagination. a good example is the making of their movie. to them all these crazy things were happening but in reality (episode 25) it come out completely normal. I'm going to be honest and say I don't really remember some of these nitty gritty details like Itski teasing about the closed space thing but I would have remembered something like that throwing me off so far. most likely something they talked about after the fact. I'm not sure if this is exactly the moment your talking about but I remember a scene with Itski and Kyon talking outside and the scene starts in the middle of their conversation. I took that as they had already talked about the dream Kyon had and how Haruhi was wearing a ponytail or whatever. also I never said that Kyon put these characters into their roles idk where that came from... lastly the whole thing about engaging with the questions the series presents: what do you mean? its art everyone can take it a different way, I took it as a realization of young peoples imagination. id love to hear what you took away from it but saying I side stepped it is disingenuous
@BrightHelix
@BrightHelix 8 ай бұрын
@@shiroberry I wouldn't say the movie came out completely normal, as the special effects DID autonomously add themselves despite Kyon falling asleep during the last minute editing. And also you keep calling the Closed Space from the end of Melancholy "Kyon's dream", but remember, Itsuki, Mikuru, and Yuki were awake and active outside of the Closed Space at the time, they don't need to be told about it, they were there. As for the other stuff, it's pretty clear that the core thrust of the series are the questions of who Haruhi is, why she of all people is in this position, what does it mean that she has these powers, and how her and Kyon's relationship changes the two of them. That's why each of the three organizations watching her have their own theories on what Haruhi is, we're supposed to think about it ourselves. Your interpretation... side steps that, says it doesn't matter because there's nothing going on with Haruhi. Did Haruhi recreate the world that night three years ago and fill it with the mystery she desired? Or did she simply gain the ability to draw them to her, even if her common sense keeps them at arms length? In your view, it's neither, because they aren't Aliens, Time Travelers, or ESPers, despite all evidence to the contrary. What are the Agency's, the Data Overmind's, or the Time Traveler's intentions towards Haruhi, and what of their more sinister counterparts we encounter later in the novels? Nothing, because they're not real. You're taking the intrigue out of the series and replacing it with a more boring story.
