Final clubs at Harvard. I needed a full 11+ minutes to say what I needed to say. And still, I forgot things.
Remember that my opinion is one of THOUSANDS, and that I do not represent everyone at Harvard. Also remember that I still love Harvard, and would absolutely recommend it to anyone who gets in. Every college has its faults, and I feel I would be giving you guys a false impression if I only talked about the positives. Anyway, enough of my writing, enjoy this analysis of the party scene at Harvard, as seen through my eyes.
Amendments/Clarifications:
**The FIRST male final club was established in 1791, not ALL male final clubs.
*The final clubs are private social clubs, so they're not within Harvard's jurisdiction. This gives Harvard less power over what the final clubs do. In fairness to the Harvard administration, they did make moves to try and correct the gender imbalance in the social scene. Have they done enough? How much should they do? These are questions to be debated over a nice HUDS meal.
*HUDS stands for Harvard University Dining Services.

This is so accurate! I have the same exact experience with fraternities. They dominate the social scene at my school and to me it feel sexist that they throw parties with a 5 to 1 girls to guys ratio. It makes me feel like meat. It's gross.
@dothedeed
@dothedeed 7 жыл бұрын
This is so dumb. If you were at a party where the ratio was 5 guys for every girl that's when you'd feel like meat. Your problem is you want to get hit on and don't like the competition for attention / being around lots of hotter girls.
@dovermaskot4441
@dovermaskot4441 7 жыл бұрын
It isnt a contradiciton. The 5-1 girls/guys ratio lets one girl be lucky, either because she chooses so or is chosen, while the other 4 are just leftover "decoration". Worse, the guys can act as they will (consider the girls as interchangeble fuck material), if one girl doesnt like, there is still enough "meat". Yes, the opposite can happen too as you described but as i said, it is not contradictory, both scenarios can apply.

MsComedyTV MsComedyTV please stop, how do you think guys who can't afford /don't like fraternities and can't even get into a party, hence never be allowed into the big party scene like you mentioned feel? would it make you more comfortable with a 1/5 girls to guys ratio? but i understand the whole "guys running the party scene" and it sucks

As a young girl, I am constantly recommended fitness, beauty, and relationship lifestyle videos. Many of the most popular KZfaqrs create content in those categories, and I am not particularly interested in those things. So, when I see your videos, I am refreshed. Not only do your videos actually have substance, but they provide a multi-dimensional take on humanity, and, implicitly, femininity. I wish there were more women on KZfaq like you that I could watch and use to guide my perspectives and ambitions. Your presence on this platform, even though you may feel uncertain about it, is deeply appreciated.

Also, don't forget that men are expected to be physically fit, athletic and sporty throughout their young life life (like women) otherwise men judge other men. To be athletic drives men's hierarchy at a young age, those who aren't athletic fall away (women ignore). In addition, men are also expected to be intelligent, ambitious, unemotional, empathetic of women's feelings and people who take chances and change things. Regarding intergender relations, men are expected to court women. We are expected to take the burden of approaching and taking the risk of rejection. Such a huge weight on men. Only women see the few men who dare to take such a chance and forget all the others who don't. I think women need to start acknowledging the burdens men take in society and not trying to destroy the few 'men only' sanctuaries that currently exist. Go build your own. I dare say, that the way feminists have pushed such extreme change on men, that men will push pack with their own inequalities in the future.

Appreciation aside, I go to one of the top colleges in India and it's funny how I found so many similarities in our campus cultures. It was indeed stupid of me to assume that we were all going to be a close knit fam. There are "elite" clubs within these "elite" colleges just like Harvard. Also, yet to go to a party but have heard of such toxic culture prevailing in parties. Brave of you to call out the sexism!

As a class '11 graduate, YesReneau is on point with her analysis. For people starting at Harvard or for administrators or alums trying to get a read on these clubs, the points Reneau makes about the gender balance, power dynamics, and exlusivitiy-inclusivity-toxicity cycle were unfortunately true. Cambridge/Boston real estate prices are so expensive that healthy social scene expansion is not a problem that's going away.
