Can a single cell “change its mind”?

In an effort to replicate an experiment conducted over a century ago, systems biologists at Harvard Medical School present compelling evidence confirming at least one single-cell organism-the strikingly trumpet-shaped Stentor roeselii-exhibits a hierarchy of avoidance behaviors.
Exposed repeatedly to the same stimulation-in this case a pulse of irritating particles-the organism can in effect “change its mind” about how to respond, the authors said, indicating a capacity for relatively complex decision-making processes.

I find myself in almost utter disbelief. I search for videos about unicellular decision-making, and this, a video viewed less than 7,000 times is all that comes up. I find this entirely fascinating. The broader implications are perhaps outrageous. This sort of perceptive difference between understanding actions as a pre-programmed behavior, and as a process of decision-making is remarkably large. I am quite compelled to know more, and I only wish there were 100 more videos on the subject. Perhaps now I will have to do that which I dread the most. Learn this by, god forbid, reading.

Of course. Some of them talk to each other -- or at least signal. Look up "quorum sensing".

Amazing! Thanks for this video. (It reminds me of one of our immune cells chasing a bacteria. It's amazing to see the maneuvering of these bacteria and immune cells - it looks very much like a high-stakes fast chase with many evasive techniques to both pursue and get away. It literally appears that they understand that their lives are at stake.) Regarding this video: when this stensor roseli recoiled, it seemed a VERY deliberate move by the cell which implies choice. I think it is so important to never underestimate life itself . . . in all forms ~

Makes me think that if they can differentiate between themselves and others that there's an element of conciousness there. Maybe it really is a fundamental property.

To me, the fact that a single cell is the smallest unit of matter that can exist by itself, it would be obvious that it could also take care of itself. This is new stuff to me, maybe I'm way off.

@@Rishi123456789 I guess I should've used Independently. We are discussing the intelligence of an organism. My point is that if anything has the capability to take in nutrients, extract waste and carry out the functions of life, it should be obvious for it to make small decisions. I'm definitely not a biologists. I said cell but maybe I meant organism. My point? I thought that they already could make decisions. I guess I'm very ignorant concerning cells atoms and organisms. I don't know.

Single cell might be smallest living organism but is not smallest unit of matter which can be smaller.

@@Rishi123456789 Single cell is also not the small possible unit of matter which can be less than a cell a single molecule is smaller than that for example and a single atom smaller yet each proton, neutron and electron smaller yet and other particles smaller than that called quarks.
