Talk about return on investment. You grew some Sarpo Mira's a while back, and we follow several UK allotment channels that grow them all with great results. Also studied up on them and had to try them. To no avail though as there was just no one offering them in the States. Then BAM! Found Wood Prairie Farm last winter. Ironically, just a ways up the road from us here in Maine! And them BAM! $20/lb plus shipping. I didn't care, I had to try them. The day came for my scheduled delivery date exactly. Opened the bag like a kid on Christmas and it had 12 golf ball size potatoes that weighed exactly 1lb. My 1st response was, You're Kidding" OK, I wanted them, found them on your channel, HAD to have them, and bought them. A bit dismayed, and Not really expecting much, I planted them. 8 inground and2 10gal buckets with 2 in each. Planted them last April 23rd. But even though the plants were still healthy and vigorously growing, I had to pull one, just to see what was going on. (at least that's my story) BAM, 5.5lbs from 1 plant! Long story short, 45+lbs from 1lb of seed. That was truly a Return on my Investment! Best part is, we've got 42 in forced dormancy set aside for this year. Can't wait. Just subscribed. Had to shae this with you cuz you were a part of the story.

I planted my potato row in-between my rows of brassicas, the giant leaves helps with shading the potatoes as well as they both get harvested roughly the same time.

Good morning! I wanted to let you know that I used your deep trench method in growing my Red La Soda potatoes this year. I only have a 30x20 backyard garden plot in Tallahassee. I recently dug my potatoes and produced 45 lbs of potatoes from 5 lbs of seed potatoes on a 15 foot row. I had a lot of medium to large potatoes. I am happy with the production and will use the trench method with hilling in the future. Thanks for the advice...

Those Huckleberry Gold look great! I ordered a pound of those seeds when I saw you growing them. I can't wait to see what I get, 12 pounds would be nice but this is my first time. They are huge and seem to be going strong. Thanks for the suggestion, they have been easier to chit and came up more vigorous than the others.

Nice harvest. I planted 10 pounds of Asterix seed potatoes in 110 row feet the first week in March. It's supposed to be mid-late maturing at about 100 days. At 90 days, the vines are big but are slowing down. I notice brown leaf spot disease on some of the plants a few days ago. It's similar to early blight and if allowed to go unchecked it will infect the taters in the soil. Brown leaf spot rarely attacks tater foliage while they're actively growing but just as they begin natural senescence the foliage is extremely susceptible to diseases other than late blight. Early blight and brown leaf spot is especially bad because rain washes the spores into the soil and on to the taters causing black pit disease in the taters. My options are to kill the vines now to put a full stop on the disease or spray it with a curative and preventive fungicide and wait another week so the taters can fully size up. I decided to spray them and then kill the vines next week. I also planted four pounds of Kennebec and Yukon Gold that I bought at the tractor store. They were some really poor quality seed taters, so I only planted a little over 3 lbs. each, in two 30' rows. They are in a more open area with better drainage, and have much less of the brown spot than Asterix does. They were planted in mid-March and Yukon Gold is about ready for vine kill. Kennebec with be ready in a little over a week.

Nice potato harvest, like you I couldn't leave mine in until the vines died completely. We got a solid week of rain every day and my plants were looking pretty pitiful, plus the no see ums were eating what leaves were left. So I dug mine as soon as it dried out and my harvest wasn't amazing but I got more than I planted. I'm hoping to have a fall crop from one of the early varieties.

Potatoes grow differently based on a determinate or non determinate type. Where I like Almost all are determinate so they grow on one levels d need no hilling
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
Depends on where you live. 90 degrees will zap potatoes, so down here there's really not much difference between a "determinate" and "indeterminate" type. The early summer heat gets them all and then it's time to harvest.

I have some of that stuff and I do use it on occasion. It's quite messy, and so I don't use it that much. But it does work well. I've ran it through the injector and also just mixed in a bucket and poured alongside plants. The trick is to get it dissolved well so it's not chunky.

So question. When you said store potatoes are harder to grow and seed potatoes are the best. When you just said you can take some of the ones you just harvested and plant in fall, so is that because they where seed potatoes and will be easier to regrow?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
Seed potatoes are certified to be free of diseases. If you grow potatoes from the store or from your own saved stock, you have no way of knowing if they have some issues. We do usually save some of our spring harvest to plant in the fall, but we haven't had very good luck trying to maintain a seed stock for multiple years. The production would decrease each time we replanted our own seed stock.
