You know, in the Harvest Goddess's New Year Game Show, one of the much later rewards is Golden Lumber. Imagine if you won it, and you decide to put it in your field to proudly show what you have won, and then the Harvest Goddess came and got mad at you. It's like, WHAT THE FRICK WOMAN, YOU GAVE IT TO ME IN THE FIRST PLACE

[Explanation of This Cutscene] Back then, the GBA Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town was really influenced by a Japanese fundamental rules. Knowing this is a GBA game (popular with kids back then) and also motivates people to become productive, they have to add an "important" part in it. So they add this symbolic statement to enact the very fundamental of Japanese whole society system, known as 空気 (Kūki), hardly translates to "Air", but meant to be "Situation". There is this "Situation" that each citizen of Japan are forced able to read since elementary. The moment a person cannot catch up with or not able to read "Air"/"Situation" in a room, they instantly became the prey to mock at and set up as a bad example. Here's an example to show how does this "read the Air" works. There are people who work at an office. A newcomer was done with his shift already so there's nothing more he needs to do in the office. So he must be allowed to go home already, right? No. He have 2 option so he not shunned by his whole coworkers. The 1st one was pretending to do some work in front of his desk until seniors are done with their works, or the 2nd one is he has to stand still at the back of the room until seniors are done with their works. Fail to do this, then they become the object to throw tantrum at until he retire himself or by the office This "Air" language has been acting as unwritten rule of Japanese society since the Meiji restoration era to maintain the increment of the country productivity. I can imagine the whole translation progress from JP to EN of Friends of Mineral Town were confused figuring out the purpose of this very cutscene. Because this very cutscene was meant to be so kids dont turn into "Kūki Yomenai no Hito", or "A person that can read a situation" The new character design of Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town might be a let down or I can say downgrade from the old GBA Harvest Moon, but atleast something stupid as this doesn't happen anymore. I can kind of understand why the people in Mineral Town are angry. Pete built a fence made of solid gold; a clear sign he's descended into vanity and avarice. Even if the fence doesn't physically hurt them, the townfolk probably take it as a symptom of Pete's moral failing.

When I did this as a child, it made me cry, but now that I'm an adult, it made me angry. And quite personally, a little betrayed. In America, we at least PRETEND to be happy for someone. I thought the Japanese avoided confrontation anyways…

i remember saving up all the money on my 25th year of mineral town, thinking finally i wont have to replace the wood every five seconds so my chickens wont be attacked. put up the fence, save go to sleep wake up and everyone is pissed off at me not even telling me what i did! i have already saved and theres no way to remove golden lumber, so i had to use an old save state and go back 2 fuckin years! it was bullshit! salty as mineral people. the way i use my money is my own business damn it!
