Today we turn our attention to compression, a very useful technique in live audio! The user guide for our compressor (the DBX 166xl) is here: ftp://ftp.dbxpro.com/pub/PDFs/Manuals/English/dbx166XLManualA2.pdf

This is the best explanation of how to setup a compressor. This guy really know how to explain it in really easy terms. I really like his style. After running sound 14 years I still enjoy hearing this. It’s a great review.

I have read many articles and watched a lot of videos on this subject. Thank you for an awesome explanation. The close ups were great, and this was by far the most easy to understand for a novice. I am a streamer, or trying to be, and need this gate function to help cut out background noise while live streaming. I was really struggling with this. Your video helped me so much, thank you thank you thank you. The playing of actual audio and showing/hearing the changes with different settings was amazing. Great Job guys.

Awesome video, exactly the application that I'll be using my compressor for! I had been a little confused but after watching your video this morning I'm confident that our pastor will sound better than ever in our new building. Thanks!

In my opinion, this is the best tutorial I have found on the on the DBX compressor, so far…. I have watched others and have posted a similar comment, but I think this one explains most everything...…..Very simple lesson on it's operation….. That's one thing I believe the "Teckys" forget…. When they are explaining a product like the DBX, a Tascam Digital recorder, a Vox Modeling amp, or anything on that list that has more than three knobs on it, They should remind themselves, they are not talking to Engineers was a Master's degree, they are talking to a bunch of Musicians!! … I've been a Musician for many, Many years and played with some of the best….. Just because you are a good musician doesn't mean you have the ability to understand the high tech end of the business. That happens in a whole other part of the brain!….. So on behalf of all dedicated Musicians, Thank you for your tutorial explaining the DBX using common sense , not forgetting that Musicians are using this product, not Rocket scientists!!……….By the way, this is a great product… We use this compressor in our practice room and we have achieved a good, a balanced sound! … excellent!!!…….also, Where can I see the quiz you spoke of in the video? I would be interested…..

Side chaining is the intended use for linking left to the right channel. Left being a sent signal like a kick drum and the right being the ducked instrument like a bass guitar. The compression action only responds to the left compressor while the gain reduction triggered from the left input applies to both.

THATS good to know. Man Im still kinda lost? Seems these young men havent been back to engage with their fan base...EVER..lol.I got the old DBX 1066, which I think was used for the wax cylinder recordings?🙃Most of the parameter controls are the same, with the exception of the Gate/Expander, which this one has a release control, mine has "ratio" as the 2nd knob. I understand whats happenin in a LEFT BRAIN way but being an old road dawg from the 60s/70s era, Im tryin to get that CUSHY/ VELVETY "FEEL" I can get from my ONE knob compressor on a tiny VOX MINI 3 amp. My vocals sound KILLER, with a Crown 311 head mic , which makes me sound BETTER ,than I really am..LOL The delay is PERFECT on that crazy thing, again , just ONE knob. The one knob compressor on the lil amp gives me EXACTLY what I want when set about 3/4 the way up. That cushy FEEL Im TRYIN to get on the 1066 "seems"to have somethin to do with the gate/expander controls? All the videos Ive watched stop chort of someone actually takin a mic and demoing the controls LIVE. This has been the best yet. If ya had to guess, what is that one knob compressor on that amp doing, in comparison to this DBX that would relate to the settings I should strive for? Just get me close?Ive only got about 10 "good" yrs left in me, so ANY info you could provide would be most appreciated ! Thanks!.. signed O.K. BOOMER.

Do you know if it's possible to just use the limiter feature on this unit so that I can avoid random high audio peaks in my recording (because I normalize it after bringing it into my video editing software) High peaks in audio cause normalization to not work very well =(
