Purslane may be a common plant, but it is uncommonly good for you. It tops the list of plants high in vitamin E and an essential omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Purslane provides six times more vitamin E than spinach and seven times more beta carotene than carrots. It’s also rich in vitamin C, magnesium, riboflavin, potassium and phosphorus.
Omega-3s are a class of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Your body cannot manufacture essential fatty acids, so you must get them from food. Unfortunately, the typical American diet contains too few omega-3s, a shortage that is linked to a barrage of illnesses including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Purslane is an annual that thrives in rich soil and prefers recently turned soils. Its leaves are smooth, thick and paddle-shaped. Depending on the variety, the leaves may grow from one-half to 2 inches long. Wild purslane grows horizontally and forms flat, circular mats up to 16 inches across. Its round, thick stems radiate from the plant’s center and are often reddish at the base. About mid-July, purslane develops tiny, yellow flowers about a quarter of an inch across that usually open only in full sunlight.

I was always taught that this was portulaca and was a weed to be pulled and discarded. Last year, I learned it was actually purslane! It grows everywhere in my raised gardens and in my large potted veggie plants. I just leave it growing with the parsley, thyme, corn and tomatoes until it gets large. I saved some large fat stems and made refrigerated bread and butter pickles with them. They are crispy and great! I have some roughly-chopped purslane dehydrating now to preserve it. I love this plant and it's pretty flowers. Grows awesomely in Zone 9a! 😊

It's nice to see another fan of purslane! It's just now appearing in my garden in Oregon's Willamette Valley. It likes the hot weather, lol. I like it chopped up in yogurt, with a little mint and wild sumac spice. It's great in so many ways, though. You've go a nice patch of it, for sure! Enjoy your harvest! :D

You're absolutely right! Thank you for showing the plant. I've found a similar plant in the Mediterranean, tasted it and it was amazing, the taste and the metabolic effect. It contains the very metabolic compounds I lack (genetic/ metabolic causes): Noradrenaline, dopamine, L-dopa. (!) The minute I found out, I started thinking that eating such nutritious plants was expected, and that my genes are simply adopted to a previous abundance of wild greens in our diet as well as pure fresh water. Remove those and my genes don't work properly!

Gardeners use caution when deciding to grow purslane , it may be ok in a small garden or raised beds , but in field planting , purslane grows fast , if you rototill it or hoe it ,each piece reroots and makes a new plant spreading it . If you let it mature each plant will have 1000`s of tiny seeds . When it goes to seed it is hard to control from then on . It takes all the fun out of hobby gardening . I went from a 3 acre garden to a 1/2 acre ,and work harder in my 1/2 acre than the full 3 acre garden pre-purslane.

I have been battling it for one year. There is no way to get rid of it! I have used a flamethrower, smothered it with cardboard, covered it with wood chips. Even dig up my entire raised bed. Look, not everybody is in love with this weed. It definitely competes for soil nutrients with my tomatoes and other things.

How cool! I found this little succulent growing in the community garden at my apartment, where I have put my cottonwood bonsai into the ground to thicken their trunks for a season before returning them to the pot. Decided I wanted another endemic Colorado plant indoors (my hobby) and plucked one of the seedlings from my plot and put it in a pot. Now I am very excited to see how well it does. :D

@@ExpeditionHomestead I think purslane is a tasty, healthy vegetable which makes a great change from the ones available in most stores. But if I'd never tried it before, and someone told me it was a "superfood", I would be foolish to trust that person's recommendation. "Superfood" is a term that food marketers use to spread misinformation and confuse customers that they can fix their diets by eating one supposedly 'special' food. Surely we should resist adopting the language of the people who are paid to lie to us, at least when it comes to health topics?

@@oscarpotter2551 I think you’re getting a little too far into the weeds on that one, no pun intended. The fact is that in 3.5 oz. it contains Vitamin A (from beta-carotene): 26% of the DV. Vitamin C: 35% of the DV. Magnesium: 17% of the DV. Manganese: 15% of the DV. Potassium: 14% of the DV. Iron: 11% of the DV. Calcium: 7% of the RDI. Small amounts of vitamins B1, B2, B3, folate, copper and phosphorus. AND 5-7x the amount of ALA’s than that of spinach.

@@ExpeditionHomestead @Expedition Homestead here's the first paragraph on Wikipedia, which seems like an accurate summary to me: "Superfood is a marketing term for food claimed to confer health benefits resulting from an exceptional nutrient density. The term is not commonly used by experts, dietitians and nutrition scientists, most of whom dispute that particular foods have the health benefits claimed by their advocates". And yes, I realise its very common to throw around misleading terms and overhype nutritional figures on the internet. Yours is one of several channels calling it a "superfood" and I assume you do not actually mean to disrespect your audience. I have just started a small crop of purslane and I appreciate your growing tips.
