Harvesting Sorghum after 35 Days of Growth

Acres of Clay Homestead

Acres of Clay Homestead

3 жыл бұрын

It's been 35 days since I planted this field of Sorghum. With the hot weather we've had and irrigating several inches of water over the field, this crop has grown fast!
Kevin has decided to harvest this cutting instead of irrigating it once again. That way we will get 2 cuttings off this piece.
Thanks for joining us!

You must try to make sorghum beer. Its low alcohol but very nutritional. Also we used to have maltabella.(brand name) In south Africa where it's the porridge. This is the biggest antidote to Monsanto and gm crops

In my experience with disc cutters the sap from the plant mixed with dust or mud would build up in the rock guards, so I would carry a 4 inch scraper and clean them every day or more often. It made a big difference in cut and speed. 👍

Oh man I have been there when it comes to patching rusty air tanks. If you’re looking to replace them let me know I have a really good catalog with aftermarket truck parts. I’ve gotten some of those air tanks for under $100 believe it or not. Some of them have the wet tank and the primary air tank all in the same enclosure, those are a little bit more pricey but still cheaper than going to the dealer especially on a truck that you don’t run every single day.

I don’t want to tell anyone what to do but I’ve been a mechanic at a Deere dealer for 41 years and it sounded like the engine was still running on the discbine while Kevin was cleaning the mud off the cutter head . Rhonda i know he buy in some corn silage from a custom harvest operation in CT from there 2019 crop. This yr has been the worst he,s ever seen.Small storm cells have either dodged to the North or the south of him.Been a bad yr for him his JD 2555 he,s had over 30 yrs now with 15,000 hrs on it pto clutch pack got weak from trying to power his mixing wagon. He was forced to trade it out and found an equivalent 2755 with only 4,000 hrs on it little more hp.

Luckily the cutting machine didn't develop a lasting issue, that would have set you back . It cuts well and does a awesome job. Almost wish I had one of those to cut 3 acres of standard old field grass . I guess it could cut standard field grass. I am using a John Deere Zero Turn with grass as high as waist, set on highest setting. Temperature in Southern Louisiana 100 degrees (115) heat index. Cut from 5pm until it gets getting dark. 2 - 2 1/2 hours depending how many times I have to stop to clean out mower chute with flap tied in up position. Really could use tractor with bush-hog to speed up the cut. Rhonda, would you please ask Kevin what is a ideal used tractor (hours) to purchase. A base (hour)number to gauge when looking for used tractor. Guess it also depends how tractor was taken care of.
