I harvested and washed yeast for the first time a couple of weeks ago and thought I stuffed it up figuring out the layers and whether I got enough to pitch but it was bubbling away in the fermenter quiet happily ! But I wasn’t as scientific as you ! Something to aspire to

It doesn't take much effort - gravity does all the hard work. It doesn't take much harvested yeast to get a good fermentation but if you have any doubt you can always get a low gravity starter going and then build it up.

Slants are also used in mushroom culture, they are laid on a slant of 30-45 degrees in the fridge. As a bee keeper I noticed in another utube your long lang. on the sewage tank. So your not in Brissy its' self. I will try your way when my brew finishes, a Kviek Lultra. Dave, Love Ya Honey.

I tried sourcing slants from a local supplier but they never arrived and they don't return any messages. I ended up getting these from Amazon. That's actually a water tank the hive is on. We have about 60,000L of tank water in total, out near Dayboro.

Subscriber since 8 videos or so. I usually just keep a little from starters, but after seeing you, I might try this using pressure and the dip tube from the transfer. If this is done the same day... Fist wash in fermzilla, 2nd wash in Pet Bottles via carb cap.. from there into jars. I'm a little worried keeping all this open for quite a time since the mrs and myself do quite some baking as well in the kitchen.. Let's see, i might try this.

They are great, but I figured out you have to release the pressure after use or else the pump mechanism craps out.

Is the process the same when collecting from a conical?
@backyard-brewer
@backyard-brewer 2 ай бұрын
It’s a little easier because you can dump the yeast cake after primary fermentation, but essentially there same process.

Thats a handy sanitizer sprayer you have! Curious who makes it and if it’s available in the states?

they are garden sprayers available at your local hardware store for pesticides, (in my case)

I've seen Flora Brewing use them so they are definitely available. I got mine from Bunnings which is our version of Home Depot or Lowes.

How do you deal with pitching rates? do you have a rule of thumb? I know you won't know the cell count exactly.

I judge by the amount of yeast that settles in the slant. Mostly I treat 1 slant as equivalent of ½ pack of yeast. It's not exact but it seems to work, especially in a starter.

Thanks for the useful vid. Im just wondering if you dryhopped those beers?
@backyard-brewer
@backyard-brewer 7 ай бұрын
No, I tend not to collect the yeast after I've dry hopped. If I want to keep a yeast strain I'll collect the yeast before I dry hop. I obviously can't do that with the All Rounder's but I have one conical and plans to get a second slightly smaller one.

@@backyard-brewer cheers. I've been sent some kveik flakes so I'll make a simple beer and collect from that 👍🏻

Would I be correct in assuming that this wouldn't work if you use finings?
@backyard-brewer
@backyard-brewer 9 ай бұрын
If you have the ability to harvest yeast straight after primary is finished - like with a conical fermenter - then there wouldn't be any problems. I've read a bit about it, and in theory you can still do it because the fining agent is the first thing to settle out, and there is a lot of yeast in the slurry not bound to the finings. I'd give it a try and if you have any doubts try to activate a sample of the yeast with a small starter. Let us know how you go.

Hello to you a question your yeast you keep it in the refrigerator or in the freezer and for how long. THANKS
@backyard-brewer
@backyard-brewer 8 ай бұрын
I keep it in the fridge. Liquid yeast and slants I've kept for 6 months or longer. Dry yeast - depends on the use by date, but I've successfully used yeast a year after it's use by date by creating a starter.
