Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Bill Mumy, Renowned Actor, Musician, Writer and Author, “Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy, A Memoir”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Bill Mumy, is an actor, musician and writer, who’s been entertaining the world since he was 5 years old.
In fact, he was by far the most successful, recognizable and popular child star in the 60’s and 70’s. He appeared in dozens of TV shows including “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”, “Bewitched”, “The Twilight Zone”, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, “The Fugitive”, and many more.
But he’s best remembered for playing “Will Robinson” on the iconic, classic TV series, “Lost in Space”, which holds a permanent place in pop culture history.
He starred in 4 Disney movies and appeared in many other films including “A Child is Waiting”, “Dear Brigitte”, “Palm Springs Weekend”, and “Bless the Beasts & Children”. In fact - and this is really jaw-dropping - this man worked with more legendary superstars by the time he hit puberty, than most A-list actors ever do in their entire lives. He worked with everyone from Red Skelton, Loretta Young, Franchot Tone, June Allyson, to Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Jackie Gleason - and yes, even Brigitte Bardot.
And get this: in a highly publicized interview, Jimmy Stewart said that our guest was the ONLY child actor he’d EVER worked with who was worth a damn. What a compliment!
As an adult, he’s appeared in many movies like “Papillon”, “Sunshine”, “The Twilight Zone movie”, “Double Trouble”, “Hard to Hold”, and the 1st “Captain America” feature film. And on TV, he’s appeared in “The Rockford Files”, “Star Trek: Deep Space 9”, “The Adventures of Superboy”, ”Matlock”, “Diagnosis Murder”, and he played “Lennier” for 5 seasons on “Babylon 5”.
And of course, EVERY “Lost in Space” fan was OVERJOYED to see him appear as “the real Dr. Smith” in the 2018 Netflix reboot of “Lost in Space”.
Throughout his life, he’s been a highly accomplished and popular musician, both as a solo artist AND as a member of several bands, including “Redwood”, “The Generators”, “Action Skulls” and “Barnes & Barnes”, whose song, “Fish Heads” became a worldwide hit. He’s released over a dozen albums. And he wrote 105 songs for the TV show “Adventures in Wonderland” and got an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition.
There is truly nothing this man can’t do. Besides being an actor and musician, he’s had a prolific voiceover career, and he narrated over 50 episodes of A & E Biography. He was even the voice of Farmers Insurance for 11 years. He’s created and written numerous comic books, screenplays and novels. And for 4 years, he produced, wrote and hosted his own weekly radio show.
And now, FINALLY, he’s released his highly anticipated memoir entitled, “Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy: A Memoir”, which gives us a very insightful, honest and entertaining look not only at his multi-faceted career, but more importantly, we get to know him as a son, grandson, husband, father, grandfather and human being.

There is no question that, after Shirley Temple, the most recognizable and successful child star - especially in the 60s and 70s - was Billy Mumy. When he finally released his memoir last month, I was determined to interview him. He and I are about the same age, and I absolutely loved his work. I was an only child and wished he were my brother! In my humble opinion, THIS is the DEFINITIVE interview with Bill Mumy. He’s a master storyteller and man oh man does he have some wonderful stories to tell about his incredibly prolific career and the iconic legends he worked with. We’ve had some great legendary stars on our show, but for me, this episode is one for the ages!

*What do you think of Billys Memoir? Like that you let the guest speak. So many podcasts, the host cuts off the guest midsentence. Sometimes it seems a guest has a pause expecting you to interrupt but you do not. You also did good research about many movies Billy played in and the stories of things happening during the filming. I enjoyed this interview. I still watch the original(s) Lost In Space w/Billy Mumy. Great Job....again!*

Unfortunately some actors are eventually destroyed by their ego, but Mumy has never lost sight of his humility. It has remained intact throughout his career. In the business he’s in, that’s very important. Thanks for asking him to tell his Hitchcock story. I’ll never tire of hearing it.

This was a terrific interview! You should be highly commended for the wonderful intro, outro and generally hitting all the right notes in between. It was an hour wonderfully spent. I’m a huge fan of Billy’s (hard for me to drop the “y”) and even though I’m ten years younger, I truly feel as though I grew up with the guy! I’m sure there’s a multitude in my generation that would make the same claim. We lived for those shows! The Hitchcock story is classic. It was common knowledge that Hitch loved wine, blonds and murder and hated eggs, cops and children! Too bad Billy caught him on a bad day. Thanks for an outstanding tribute to a remarkably talented and accomplished man!

It really makes you realize how fast time tumbles by. We grew up watching Billy and I loved his story about Jimmy Stewart. I also forgot what an amazing body of work Bill did in both TV and film. That Twilight Zone episode was one of my favourites and I also remembered hearing about that story about Alfred and Billy before. Alfred was infamous for trickery when wanting to get something out of his actors. I'm not saying it was right but a Hitchcock film rarely misses the mark for me and that includes his television series. Another one out of the ballpark Harvey! Why do I have this sudden urge to watch Palm Springs Weekend! 🌴❤

me and bill are the same age. one memory i have of bill mumy is his role in "bless the beasts and the children." (1971, directed by stanley kramer. a very underrated film. i rank it up there next to "billy jack" in terms of social context.) one thing i remember is - THERE'S billy mumy, "will robinson," with LONG HAIR! and i too, was following that path at about the very same time. so now, we're both 64 and we both still wear our "freak flags" proudly. good for you bill. now, say hi to "dear bridget" for me. i fell in love with her, thanks to that film, just like you did! writing, they say, is rewriting. its not easy to write well. its physically exhausting and emotionally draining. when i write i have this problem where i'm completely unable to sleep regular hours. an idea pops into my head and i know if i stop writing i'll lose it. writing really is hard work.

I just happened to turn on the TV, the night it debuted. I believe it was on a Wednesday evening at 7:30. I was 10 years old at the time. I remember thinking, wow, this is so cool! Bill talks about letters from parents expressing how the show was scaring their kids. I was a very impressionable child, and it didn't take much to scare me. That being said, I never thought LIS was scary. To me, it was exciting and such a cool show. I mean I wanted to be like Will Robinson, flying around in space and having a robot to talk with, a laser gun at my side. The first season was amazing. The second was cool, being in color and all. But then, it started to get silly. I still watched it, I guess hoping it would get better. Overall, I liked the series. It was science fiction, which I love watching. Both Bill and Angela seem like down-to-earth individuals, and I enjoy hearing their interviews. Jonathan Harris also has some terrific interviews on KZfaq that some of you may enjoy as well. There's no doubt that he was a great actor. He was very intelligent, a pharmacist before becoming an actor. Guy, June, and the rest were all terrific. LIS was casted well. It's a shame that it didn't continue another year or two. But that's show business! 😀🛸

If I may be so, as bold as Mr Mumy, I thought the Hon. Justice might do a backflip yet withholding absolute surprise, that our lost in space, father was a ‘fine specimen’. Yah sure but a thousand years after? Again, Brian Linehan would’ve been a staunch supporter and a patron. Quite beyond the call of duty, alas Harvey most likely has never operated in half measures. Saving more accolades as time goes on.

Plus all the other many many stars. Even i liked many of those ppl and some of the very sexy ones on the show were(Linda Gay Scott- Sherry Jackson & Dee Hartford)I thought those 3 were the very best female guest on the show-Barr None !!!. There were only 3 episodes that i never watched on my video set and they were the ones with that old short German mouth popper(that would slap or pop his mouth after he was done talking)I can't think of his name but to name just 2 episodes he was in were(The Android Machine & The toy maker).I have the entire set of LIS and this guy ruins those 3 episodes for me.I never watch these 3 episodes but i do watch all the rest.
