Giving Donna such a big promotion was one of the most unrealistic things the writers ever did. And while i understand why they did it (everyone was getting promoted except for the mindreading wonder woman of a secretary) it would never ever be possible to become COO let alone Senior Partner in a big firm like this when your only education and job experience is being a secretary. Might be an unpopular opinion but i think Donna is the most overrated character in the entire show.
@simone3633
@simone3633 2 жыл бұрын
The most overrated character is Mike, who mentally memorizes or photographs thousands of pages in a matter of hours. Which is impossible. Instead, it is possible to find out everything you need to know about the administrative and operational functioning of a company in 12 years. And if you have the skills to meet people and know how to work with them, the skills that Donna has you can become a COO.

@@wwpark It's clear you didn't understand how the writers built the character of Donna and the relationship between her and Harvey. The fact that Donna was never just a secretary. She and Harvey were partners, a team where Donna complemented Harvey with her skills. If you understood the characters and knew what a COO is and how many types of COOs there are, you would see that Donna fits the role. You didn't even understand my comment. In 12 years, Donna hasn't slept behind a desk. She knows everything about the company and employees and has won the trust and respect of the partners. These, together with all the skills that the writers gave her, make her suitable for COO.

That's what happens when the managing partner can't make a decision. This show was great, but it went down hill big time when the head of the firm couldn't make a direct decision and be firm on the decision. On top of that, since Jessica left, the managing director changed 3/4 times between Zane, Harvey and Louis! All because of this exact reason. I'm no law expert, but one thing is for sure, if the top can't make firm decisions, then the bottom definitely won't know what's going on.

For Harvey, Donna was never just a secretary. She was her friend, confidant, and full of confidence in her because he knew she was sincere, loyal, and devoted. He showed us that he considers her his partner . The COO was given to Donna by the writers of the first episode, and if you understand that, you won't consider her overrated and selfish.
@WayneMercy
@WayneMercy 2 жыл бұрын
She was totally selfish and definitely not loyal tho. She destroyed that memo, before learning it was a fake, solely to avoid any blame being put on her since it had her stamp on it. She then throws Harvey under the bus and fully commits to letting him take the fall by refusing to own up to her own mistake and testifying as to what she did. Later on she ditches Harvey immediately after he just got her out of going to prison and let’s not forget when she broke privilege by telling thomas Kessler confidential information and once again deciding to let Harvey take the fall instead of her (she doesn’t even bother showing up to that hearing even though it was her fault and not Harvey’s). Lastly, she also crumbled on the stand at mikes trial and plead the fifth in an attempt to put her own needs above everyone else’s.

@@WayneMercy Donna is the one who opened it eyes to Cameron's illegalities and who later saves him from the accusation of hiding the evidence. Thanks to her, he caught Daniel red-handed and made him resign so that Jessica became manager partner and Harvey became a partner and received the much-dreamed office. Donna broke the law and destroyed the memo to protect him and was fired. And even if she no longer worked for him, she convinged Louis gave up the suspension request due to the aggression. Friends and the entire network of acquaintances (prosecution, bar, judges' offices) are used to facilitate Harvey's business and help him achieve his goals. His files are at the top of the pile to be taken with priority. Even if he is not a lawyer, he has a lot of great ideas that help him solve his cases and if it hadn't been for her to temper his impulsive nature, he would have made a lot of mistakes. He leaves the intercom open precisely because he trusts her judgement. However, when Paula asks him to fire her, he racks his brains to find a solution to get rid of her and doesn't even have the decency to tell her in front of. This is what loyalty looks like at that moment Donna the selfish told Harvey to do something to make Mike's dream come true (to become a lawyer) she told Rachel to plead her case with Jessica to pay for her college and Donna went to Jessica and obtained Louis the office on Malone's corner.

When Zane was managing partner, Donna refused to do any actual COO work. She may have administrative experience being a secretary but not any business experience or a degree for that matter. Her outside connections (unless she dated the men) have been of secretaries only. If you anticipate managing partners need, best you become is their E.A. Or introduce a position of Welness Director who maintains harmony in firm by stopping impulsive decisions of partners not COO. Even, an office boy or clerk devotes long years to a office. Donna didn't know how to do Doc review as well being a secretary. Being a whisperer and guide to a partner doesn't warrant this promotion. That too when you get flustered when put into a stand and intrude too much into the personal life to an extent of sabotaging their relationships.

Suits tried to be Mad Men. Red hair secretary in Mad Men ends up Senior partner, later starts her own firm. On Mad Men it worked because degrees aren't essential to advertising, especially not in the 50/60's. It's repeatedly shown her admin keeps the company running & the character slowly get more responsibilities until she's essentially running accounts. It works. On Suits degrees are essential to legal work, Donna isn't essential to the company, she is never given any responsibility outside corporate secretary. She destroys evidence, a fireable offence. Then she's given her own office & made COO? Yeah, the associates would quit.

She takes care of the day-to-day operations, space management and staff management so that the lawyers have all the conditions to do their job, which is to win cases and make money. What he needs for this job is to know how the business works, to know the employees, the customers, which the show shows he knows.

The studies required to be a COO depend on the job description. And this depends on the reason why the current CEO needs a COO. Because not all CEOs need a COO. For example, unlike Harvey, Jessica did not needed. There are many requirements to occupy this position. Among the most important is trust. As COO you have access to resources and information and you will not occupy this position if the CEO does not trust you. The fact that in ep. pilot she selects Harvey's associate tell you something? Or that Harvey gives him a blank check and access to his account and the house keys?

@@chhavimonga First of all, are you comparing a law firm with a corporation? The COO position can be created in any type of company (from small, medium-sized companies to corporations) regardless of the field of activity and even in non-profit organizations. And a corporate structure can even have two COOs at a given time. Depending on these,the educational requirements and that standard job description are adapted. You cannot compare a law firm with a company in the automotive industry or a retail company. In my comment it is written that there are many requirements to occupy this position and if you had followed the show carefully you would have seen that Donna fulfills them.

Whereas Donna literally got everything very easily because she slept with Harvey and Harvey had a crush and a soft spot for her. She made way more than any of the secretaries at the firm cause of Harvey and usually did what she wanted to. There was this one time where the firm was having every file checked by the sec for buried information and Harvey asked for Donnas help ro find the file before the sec and Donna replied “No I won’t cause thats not what I do”.
