Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been Turkey’s head of state for 15 years. He’s squashed dissent, dismantled the free press, and jailed opponents. Yet, he was just re-elected to another term in office. Why is Turkey’s strongman so popular (if he really is)? And, has democracy in Turkey died?

Erdogan was sworn into office on Monday, July 9th. He immediately appointed his son-in-law as treasury and finance minister. Venezuelan autocrat Nicolas Maduro was among the foreign leaders who attended the inauguration ceremony.

One of Erdogans opponents "Selahattin Demirtaş" is a supporter of a turkish terror group, which killed over hundreds of civilians and soldiers, who finance themself through the smuggling of drugs. I agree with you that turkey has become an elected autocracy, but i prefer a competent autocracy to an incompetent democracy. I mean just look at the USA your democracy made you the butt of every joke. Your call it lobbying in the USA, i see it as what it is, bribery. Under the big bad erdogan ppl have free healthcare and a pension, they dont have to wait in line for hours to get a gallon of gas. Do you know what would happen in turkey before Erdogan came to power, when one of you loved ones died and you couldnt pay the bills... they would own his body. Do you know what happend in the later half of the 1900 hundreds in turkey? How ppl were hanged, when they talked about religious freedom. Those guys who were hanged, were hanged under the command of the chp who overthrew the ruleing party with the help of the military. Oh btw the CHP is the biggest opposition party in turkey and they criticize Erdogan for helping the syrian refugees. My point is, if you cant see the whole picture nor understand it, how can you give a relevant critique on it?

I hate what has happened to democracy around the globe. My country's former Prime Minister (Najib), gave Turkey a Private School Principal which he has not return since over a year ago. Turkey is accusing this school principal of some religious terrorism when he's the most left leaning principal around. Najib literally kidnapped this principal to let Turkey to torture or kill him. There's just so much corruption that Najib is willing to let dictators from Turkey to kill educators.

Mete Don't worry turkey is to large, too ethnically homogeneous (except for North Kurdistan), and their military isn't structured like the Arab armies (not yet). It would be like the battle of Gallipoli: bloody, long, and would just be too costly.

Well, we still use the Israel' s softwares to operate drones and jets. Our weapons are form 1970 but as you said we became accustomed to put meat against steel. I believe Turkey needs to start to be agressive and invade the Middle East with Turkish schools and companies. We have a huge unemployed population of teachers and our market is satisfied. There is a giant Ottoman sympathizer population there.

The "Arab Nation" created by Lawrence. Before him, they were just bunch of tribes speaking different accents of Arabic language. Since Lawrence made them backstab the Ottoman Empire they could never attain a stable leadership. All the so called "Arab nations" in the Mid-East hate each other (look at the history of the invasion of Palestine and Iraq). Believe me if Turkey can proves her power and reliability, poor citizens will choose us instead of Americans and their ass licking dictators.

That secularist would need a majority vote. Simply by that fact you got yourself popular-only candidates for the job. Think like U.S. system. No matter who you vote for, they cant lose large public favor and therefore cant risk to be too into some ideological way. Majority of Turkey is conservative. So its either a secularist lite candidate (they try this but to no awail until this Point LOL) or the same conservative Party ruling the next half of the century. Its win-win either way for the country.

Don't worry Lou, it's not as bad as you picture it. I'm an attorney and I have been a vocal opposer (like millions of others) of Erdogan for 15 years. No trouble. If I was involved with any government contracts or entities or pro-government institutions, that would be another story though, I'd most likely get into some kind of trouble. I think the entire piece was about 60% accurate. It's kind of a shame that you never mentioned the terrorist organization called "Feto", led by the religious extremist Fethullah Gulen, who has been residing in Pennsylvania under the protection of CIA. There's a huge story there and without telling it, you can't picture Turkish politics. He has been injecting his followers into critical positions in the government since the 70's, thanks to the help of governments, especially Erdogan's. The Ergenekon was an assault on the elite and the secular within the government, especially the army to make way for the Gulenists. Somewhere along the way, Gulen and Erdogan clashed and the coup attempt was the "all-in" move from Gulen, one last attempt to take control of the government. He failed, and we are all glad for that. If he were successful, you would probably making a story of Turkey, quite similar to that of Iran following the overthrowing of Riza Pahlavi and the arrival of Ruhollah Khomeini. I also wish you voiced Erdogan's supporters' view on these things to better stick to the facts and to be fair. I also think your entire take on the current situation is a bit exaggerated. The election results are of no surprise to the Turkish people. We were expecting him to win. He won because one of his primary opposers made a deal with him and supported him in the past two elections. They brought him 10% of his votes. So, he himself lost quite a bit of vote. Turkish majority has been leaning to the right and to politicians with strong ties to a religious lifestyle since the 1950's. You would need to understand the majority of the Turkish people to make sense of the election results, and you really can't unless you live in Turkey. I rambled on quite a lot, well I wish we could sit and have a lengthy chat about these things. I'm gonna live my life.

Democracy during Ataturk? From 1923 (founding of the Turkish republic), to 1946, there was only 1 political party in Turkey. All of the other parties were closed, their leaders were jailed (Kazim Karabekir for example), and the opposition was silenced. Ataturk died in 1938 but the first true election with multiple candidates happened in 1946. Unfortunately, look up the Turkish elections of 1946, it is the funniest encounter of democracy you will face. There were armed soldiers at each voting desk and people had to vote openly, not unanimously in a closed booth. The votes were counted in closed doors, not open to the public as in today, and they were burnt before the results were announced. Democracy under Ataturk sounds a lot like Dinosaurs in 19th century.

I've just been to Istanbul / Turkey. All of the city has been plastered with ,,Thank you, Istanbul!"-posters (they even packed lots of houses in their entirety!), with photo-shopped Erdogan, looking up to the sky like a little school boy. The city still seems to function, and I guess if you're opportunistic, you can somehow arrange for the moment. Yet, there's this weird feeling lying like a dark cloud over the hipper areas, like Kadıköy - people feel that their free lives won't go on in Turkey under Erdogan like this forever. So there's this "happy sadness" to enjoy live as how long it will be possible to. Another interesting topic is be the situation with Germany and Turkey right now, where many Germans avoid to travel to Turkey anymore, yet, lots of Turkish people living in Germany sympathize heavily with Erdogan and what he did to Turkey as they never were able to really connect to Germany (the country they've been living in mostly for their whole lives) - a conflict that has been lying under the surface, and now explodes to the ground, unfortunately. :-( Our Airbnb-Host in Istanbul - a nice guy - told as that the foreign media would not report the truth aboout Turkey and how it really is. Well, I think they do... In our rooms, they are some brochures to lead the way to Islam. So probably, the new Turkey will be a good country for our host - despite, his Business will someday decline (for example, PayPal already got forbidden in Turkey / pushed out of business) and right now depends on an American company.

This is a fantastic video - both educational and insightful! Democracies sometimes go out with whimpers and not shouts. Also here in Europe once reasonably well-functioning democracies are exhibiting signs of deterioration. Only dumb luck prevented me from paying for my democratic engagement with my life after one far-right terror attack in Norway. As we are beset with challenges to democratic order, we all have a responsibility to strive to involve ourselves in the democratic process to preserve it. America is moving in directions which show deeply uncomfortable common traits with outright fascism, as people lose faith in democracy and turn to a darker instinct within themselves; the cult-like submission to autocratic rule that wiped out European democracies. I am heartened by the Democratic candidatures of people like Ocasio-Cortez, with ground-up campaigns around amazing individuals, organized so organically by their local communities. They show me that the Democratic party might be revitalized in time to protect the Republic, but it really is a race against time; authoritarianism is rapidly taking over American conservatism with few signs of resistance. Here in Europe we have our own issues, but what keeps me up at night is the prospect of the breakdown of NATO. Not, as a Trump supporter might assume, for spending reasons; a European defensive pact would increase spending but the money we do spend would all be going into local jobs. But because our alliance builds a geopolitical fact out of our belief in civic ideals of democracy. Article 5 - stating that an attack on one is an attack on all - has only ever in history been invoked once; to come to the US' aid in Afghanistan after 9/11. Trump is raising doubts as to the US' commitment to the pact in a ham-fisted extortion racket, but he's genuinely forcing us to look elsewhere for alliances. Europe could protect itself and assert its interests and rights militarily if a crumbling NATO forces us to, but that would be just as much to the US' detriment as ours. As for Norway, our mountains are porous with ABRAMS tanks, LAVs, and more than 600 HMWWVs in various configurations. The German invasion of April 9th 1940 and our complete lack of preparation for that event is a national scar on our psyche. Everyone knows the phrase "Never again April 9th". On that basis, opposition against NATO membership would mean McCarthyist oppression in Norway until well into the 70s. Our military strategy, should Russia invade our common area, is basically to be cannon fodder until the cavalry arrives. Of course we cannot accept real doubt as to whether it will. And that keeps me up at night.

u r a very smart young man. We are looking at this same process in America aka shift towards autocracy. I think social media and Television has played a role in this. I am just an old mid-western women but I think we need to have a citizen's network. Free from ad's and money incentives, Candiates would be given equal time to answer questions that were selected based on the number of people who wanted a specific question or topic address. No photo ops, no rallying the crowd with symbols etc. I am suggesting a flat question and answer format. U r from a very different era than I am. Do u think this will help America retain and strengthen its democracy? I think there is something like this in switzerland, so there would be a model to work from.

Ohh this sounds all too familiar. I know Serbia is not as interesting as Turkey but our government (aka our president Aleksandar Vucic) is doing the same thing to the tee. No wonder Erdogan and Vucic are good friends, i would encourage you to take a look at political situation in Serbia too.

Stephen McManus wrong. The main opposition leader is muharrem ince with 33% and not demirtaş with 7% who is in jail right now because he is part and supports of a Terrorist organisation

Not just Trump, deep state has been known all around the world for many years. Look up the Gladio operation during the cold war. Italians uncovered this huge organization belonging to the NATO. They run covert operations all across US and Europe. Call it deep state, Gladio (sword in Italian), or Ergenekon, there are many layers to world politics than just a few presidents and prime ministers my friend.
