@@MalachiTheWendigo It's not that math is hard, is that you lack incentives. I knew a guy who was clueless about math on paper... and yet could calculate wether 100 Haste Rating was better or worse than 100 Attack Power in a pinch by applying the ridiculously complex rating formulas.

I think she means the finger trick. 9xN where N is any number between 1-10 finger and the finger being assigned in order left to right. Put the N finger down and the amount of fingers on the left side of the N-finger is the numerical value of the tens place and the amount of fingers of the right of the N-finger is the value of the ones place.

I thought it was a bit at first I legitimately thought it was all just a bit. I was in genuine disbelief what I witnessed in that section of the stream. She brought up PEMDAS, and completely forgot the entire meaning and reasoning behind the rule. I have never laughed and been in so much pain in my life. It was truly a magical moment. That being said, I surprised myself, I haven't done math for like half a decade now, and I was certain I was gonna struggle as well. Managed to solve each one (albeit very slowly cause I can't do mental math fast). Good for me I guess.

In Japan, children memorize their multiplication tables, including the 9 times table, in second grade of elementary school. She should also memorize her multiplication tables, including the 9 times table.

memorizing the multiplication tables isn't actually all that helpful. like, I have memorized none of them, and I'm usually the fastest person I know with mental math. usually up to 3 digits per side is manageable, much easier if it's less; if I'm careful I can go farther but it starts getting pretty slow. what's more helpful is learning patterns and how to remember previous results while you're doing the rest of the work.

Yeah, if I was teaching a kid to multiply by 9, I would just tell them the secret to multiply by 10 and then subtracting whatever was multiplied: 9 x 9 = (10 x 9) - 9 = 90 - 9 = 81.

Finger trick is nice… or just do x10 and minus the thing. So: (9x10) -9 = 90-9= 81 = 9x9 (8x10)-8= 80-8= 72 = 8x9

There's a much easier trick that requires no fingers... when you multiply by 9 the two digits add up to 9 and the first digit is one less than whatever you're multiplying by 9. I.e. 9x4 is 36, 3 and 6 add up to 9 and 3 is one less than 4. Very easy and no fingers required.

It's the same if you have been solving medical and pharmalogical questions quickly efficiently for years then suddenly basic math appears like 53+17 and you whip out the calculator on your phone just to make sure the answer isn't 60... If you focus on your work too much for too long, other parts of your brain tends to atrophy or became stagnant at best... It's still funny when it happens though... Lets you know you're still human, not some hard-drive that keeps info for life.

Multiplying by 9 is trivial because it's like multiplying by 10, but minus one amount of the multiplied value. Example. 8*9= is equal to 8*10, which is 80, but minus 8. 80-8=72. So 8*9=72 Same above 100. 32*9= is the same as 32*10-32=320-32=300-12=288

not sure if anyone realizes that shes playing minecraft when she sayd 9x9 is 36, shes probably talking about the perimeter of some building a 9x9x9x9 square shaped building in theory would be 36 blocks (its still wrong, because the corner blocks dont need to be used twice, a 9x9 perimeter building would take 33 blocks, i think)
