This week I talk about whether the art of modern landscape photography has been lost. I’ll cover some ideas regarding this and let you now how I feel about the whole situation. Remember this is all an opinion. I am neither right nor wrong, I’m just one more opinion. Thanks for watching!

Thomas, this is exactly how I feel about Modern Landscape photography, over the last few years I have been withdrawing from many of the sites you mention. Initially, you are presented with so-called Wow photos in the likes of 500 px and yes, initially they seem to be amazing images, but they just seem to go on and on with the same massively overprocessed feel. Some photographers readily admit they can spend hours on just one image with many dozens of layers being used. How can they possibly be a representation of what they actually took?

Wow! You really made me think in this video! I actually watched this twice since these concepts are new to me and I am eager to learn, especially from a seasoned photographer/professor such as yourself. I suppose when I look at a landscape, it's already so beautiful to me, so the goal of my photography is to replicate that beauty. I'm a birder, and sometimes when I see a bird, I am literally overtaken by its beauty. The adrenaline flows and endorphins peak, and I strive to capture that feeling in my shots, if that's even possible. My photography, so that I can stay true to myself and be authentic, must always come as close to the level of excitement I felt observing that bird in nature doing what it does. That will probably always be my "style". And I guess amateur photographers can stay true. But with professional photographers, I can fully appreciate the competitiveness that happens on social media, and I bet many really good photographers can't sleep at night feeling discouraged that they adhered to a standard, acceptable, sameness format (selling out) rather than letting their natural talents take over and dictate how they share their art. I'm so eager to hear what others think.

“Fed to me to make me like it”, that is a top fact. (My opinion, of course). You’re right, i think this AI art stuff has really reached its brain washing hands to a LOT of younger people. It’s almost like that book by Neil Gaimen “American Gods”. New age art is slowly taking over, i feel a bit sad about that, i miss the original art from just the picture taken of a physical form, I personally do not want anything to do with the AI stuff. I will edit, but not add anything that isn’t there. Sometimes, i wish we could go backwards. And sure, I’d love to make money from what i do, and today, that’s becoming so hard to do, from what i can see. Give me original work. I agree, its not lost, but I feel it’s definitely being weeded out. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it!

Another thing to consider is the cameras themselves. There isn't as much difference between the various brands today when compared to 10-15 years ago. We've nearly reached the saturation point concerning how good modern digital cameras can be with 40-60-100 MP, backlit, IBIS, sensors. Throw in the multi-coated, IS/VR lenses, and the market begins to blur together. Add whatever can be don in post these days and, yeah, everything begins to blend into one. If you really want your images to look 'real' and/or 'true' to the scene, go back to shooting film. Simple enough.

And I do love shooting film! I need to make more film content on here. I have been so busy this last year that film hasn't been huge for KZfaq. I never stopped shooting it of course but making videos while shooting film has just not been high on the list. I need to crank that back up to the front.

I agree to a point. Be nice if the dynamic range & shadow could be rvpvered. But I do get your point. Lately I have been shooting some backlit wildlife silhouettes with no shadow recovery or EC & it reminds me of the film days of past. Think my 17 yr old Kodak Gold 200 in the fridge is still good?

@@thomastuorto9929 You just have to accept the limitations inherent in film, embrace them, and work with them. If the Gold has been kept cold I don't see an issue, although setting it at ISO 100 might not hurt. I'm putting a roll of fuji Reala 100 that's a good deal older than that in my Bronica tomorrow and heading to a local car show. I'll shoot it a 50 with the 80mm wide open at f/2.8. Should be fun.

@@fairwayfrank Thanks for the reply & tip. I'll shoot half the roll at 100 & the other at 200 to see when I finally do it. Have fun.

Good points. I am not against editing pictures but it's getting to the point where everything looks so manufactured. Everything can be changed digitally and with AI tools it will keep getting more extreme. I don't mind if that's the point, for example a matte painting in a tv show that needs to look a certain way but when it's supposed to be real, I tend to lose interest with all the editing. It feels like a product that is being made in a factory.

I started to take photos a couple of years ago, no prior experience but I watched a lot of KZfaq, I started to post on instagram, I dis well in the first month amassing nearly 2k followers, I started to fall into this rabbit hole of likes and attention, I also started to dislike why the photos I liked the most wouldn’t get as much attention as the ones I liked the least, started to obsess about it a little too much I watched a video similar to this and realised I was taking pictures for the wrong reason, now I don’t post(except for Flickr, I don’t see this as bad as other platforms), I take pictures for me and my walls, I print my own and I believe I have grown more and stress less I have no social media presence anywhere these days and never been happier

Exactly. Thank you for you response on this. I think it's become a real problem for the advancement of this wonderful pass time. Funny though. Thomas Heaton and Gavin Hardcastle both seem to have watched my video. LOL Maybe we are on to something!
