HAS THE MARKET BECOME TOO FOCUSED ON FINANCE?

The art market’s boom this century, and the high prices that art can now command, have naturally been accompanied by a growing interest in art as an asset. Auction house guarantees, payment instalments and other incentives have helped power the market machine while sophisticated schemes such as art funds, stock exchanges and other fractionalising tools are increasingly the norm. But has the art got lost in the process? What does this mean for the traditional role of a gallerist or dealer? Why has art’s fractionalisation only had a limited success so far? Today’s panellists, with expertise in the art finance, auction and gallery world, will explore the common ground between art and money and assess whether the market’s focus on finance has gone too far.
