Cracking The Cryptic

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We absolutely LOVE this sudoku from sujoyku. It's called Reliably Unreliable and features a brand new ruleset that will just make you smile. It's also just 1 star for difficulty (we would say it's probably closer to 2) so you must have a go if you have a few minutes free.
Have a go at the puzzle here:
sudokupad.app/...
Rules:
Normal irregular 7x7 Sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and region must contain the digits from 1 to 7 once each. All cages are “Rellik Cages”. In a Rellik Cage digits do not repeat, and any combination of one or more digits within such a cage CANNOT sum to the value in the top left. (Eg a Rellik Cage with given value 6 cannot contain the three digits 1,2&3; the two digits 1&5; the two digits 2&4; or a single 6.

Thank you for this amazing feature, Simon! For me as a setter, it not only is a great honour but also very enlightening to watch you solve puzzles that I have created since I always learn something about them myself. Here I was not aware of your later geometric correspondence argument (which you explained brilliantly). My own solve path only used the first leftover. One comment on the bottom right region: You can actually play the pingpong game even there, but it is less obvious. When starting out with 6x6 examples I found out it was impossible to have 4-cell Rellik Cage with value 9. In other words: Whenever we pick 4 distinct digits from 1 to 6, there is some way to express 9 as a sum. Although I might appear very nerdy, let me give you a short proof why that is true. Assume we take 4 digits from 1 to 6. We can only pick at most one of 3/6 and 4/5, so we do have to pick 1 and 2. Now we cannot choose 6 (1+2+6=9) and picking 3 inevitably leaves us with 2+3+4=9 (picking 4 from 4/5) or 1+3+5=9 (picking 5 from 4/5). With this "Rellik sudoku theorem" you can state that the 9-cage has to have a 7 and go through the whole argument as you did in the video, Simon. Thanks again for this nice feature and your kind words! Kind regards, Nils Leder/sujoyku

In this particular puzzle there is another way to figure it out. When I found out that 1 has to stay in 9-cage, I looked at triplets. If we keep 3 in 9-cage, you have to get rid of 6 and 5 (135=9). Leaving you with 3,4,1,X. Now you have no place to put 2 into. It's either 2+6=8 or 3+4+2=9. Therefore you must keep 6 in 9-cage and the rest solves itself. This is not as universal as the theorem, but this was my break-in. Brilliant puzzle, thank you!

I didn't even think of that while solving it, I went first to the center region and noticed that a 7 couldn't be in the 7 region, so it had to be in the 8 region which meant a 1 had to be in the 7 region which meant that 6 had to be in the 8 region and thus 2 would have to be in the 7 region and then 4 and 5 would have to be in the 8 region leaving 3, and that simple logic was applicable throughout every cage in the puzzle. It only took 16 minutes to solve that way, sure I used irregular region logic as well to jot down the possible values in cells, but more than that and regular sudoku logic isn't necessary to solve it. And it's a beautiful and fun puzzle. And I must say that I really enjoyed the ruleset.

that is an interesting principle about the 9 cage. the way i saw (which is true from the very beginning without the forced 1) is that it is impossible to put 4 in that cage (in this puzzle w/ the 8 cage opposite it) 4 excludes 5, which in turn excludes 3 from the 8 caged, and puts it in the 9 cage. now both 2 and 6 are excluded from the 9 cage and must be in the 8 cage, which is broken.

In fairness to Chris, he may have been distracted by the 48" of snow we got here in Cape Breton this past weekend. There's so much, they can't simply plow the roads, they have to bring in dump trucks to haul a bunch of the snow away! Bella looked up when she heard Simon say her name, which I take as her way of saying hello.

I tried this puzzle, and got part of the way through using some of the same techniques that you were using, Simon, but then I came close to running out of time so I decided to just watch you solve it for the fun of it. I feel like the key to this one really is the set theory. It wasn't hard to figure out what goes into which cages in the double-cage regions, but there were so many pencil marks to disambiguate, and I feel like it really needed that set theory. The 4s were the only overlap digit in the two 8-cages, and once you have a few digits, it's easier to winnow down to pairs, and pairs intersect the other cages and things start to happen.

You can solve this without a set theory (I did in 26 minutes), but set theory, if you can spot it, makes it a little bit easier.

What a great puzzle. I personally, being more a beginner, solved without the use of leftovers, so about the time of Simon delving into leftovers, I began using a layman's version of the logic that sujoyku explained ... in the lower right I postulated that 4 was 'probably' in the 8-sum cage to reduce the pairs that would result in a break, and to prove that, I placed it in the 9-sum box and considered what happened ... which immediately put the 5 in the 8-sum cage and from there was easy to see that no combination existed that didn't result in either the corresponding 8 or 9. The rest of the puzzle followed similar logic, both painful and satisfying. Very glad I saw it through.

Another path in box “7” u could find the 1s in the 9 rellik cage, but if u then try tu put 6 in the 8 cage u can see that 3-4-5 can’t go in any combination in the 9 cage, from there some reasoning about 4s and the puzzle solve! Thery nice puzzle!!

The way to complete region 7 after knowing that the 1 is in the 9 rellik cage is by thinking about where the 4 goes. If the 4 is in the 9 cage => 5 is in the 8 cage => 3 is in the 9 cage => 6 is in the 8 cage => 2 is in the 9 cage and now the 9 cage has a 234 triple inside of it. So the 4 has to be in the 8 cage and you can find the rest of the region from there.

I saw that the bottom right block, once you've put the one digit in the nine cage, has two effective three cell cages with the non-total clue being wight. By considering the digit pairs which make eight and the digit pairs which make nine it's quite easy to pencil in the cages - there is only one way to keep everything separate that needs to be separate. You get 234 and 567 as the two groups, and obviously 234 can't be in the nine cage.

Yeah, you could do region 7 at the very start, actually. It's quite easy if you think about 36 pair in a 9 cage. If you put 3 in a 9 cage, then you'll need to put 2 here as well because of 6 in the 8 cage. Then 2+3+4 = 9 and 3+5+1 = 9, neither of 45 pair could be in the cage, so the digit that is in the cage is 6. Then 5 is also in that cage because of 3 in the 8 cage and 7 is in the 9 cage, because of 6+1+2 = 9. I believe that miss made the puzzle much more complicated for you. Cause after 1567 in the 9 cage you can place all 4s in the grid.

The way I went about the 10 and 8 cages was to focus on the digits that didn’t have a pair (5 and 4 respectively) and what would happen if they were excluded from the cage. For example, what happens if 5 is not in the 10 cage? 1+2+3+4 = 10, so it needs at least 1 number higher than 5. If we pick only 6 as the high digit, we need to exclude 4, so now we’re left with 1236, where 136 adds to 10. If we pick 7 as the high digit, then the we need to exclude 3, so we’re left with 1247, where 127 sums to 10. If we pick both high digits, then 34 are excluded and we’re left with 1267 which breaks again due to 127 triple. Therefore there must be a 5 in the 4-cell 10 cage. Similar logic applies with 4 in the 8 cages.
@PleegWat
@PleegWat 6 ай бұрын
In the bottom right, once the 1 is in the 9 cage you know you cannot have a set of digits excluding 1 which adds up to 8 anymore. So you get split pairs 2/6, 3/5, and 4/7. I'm not sure if that gets you anywhere though.

Finished in 25:13. Really interesting ruleset which took a while to get my brain wrapped around. Though I kind of brute forced all the possibilities for the Rellik cages as I don't know if there's a really intuitive way to figure out what they can be without going through the possibilities. Once you get to a certain point, everything falls in place pretty quickly, but it's a struggle up to that point. Very fun puzzle!

My reasoning for the 9/8 region: you have the 1 that must go into the 9 cage, and the other pairs that make up 9 have to be divided into both cages 27, 36, 45… 2 cant go with 6 ever because the 9 cage has a 1 already, so 2 goes with 3 in whichever cage it goes, because if 2 goes with 6 either cage will break… the third digit from that group cant be 5 because 35 will also break in both cages so 234 and 567 are the groups, 234 is 9 so 567 go with 1 in the 9 cage and 234 go in the 8 cage

let's be clear on something: 1 star on LMG is NOT "genuinely approachable", and frequently means "not for beginners"

so, how does it work in THIS puzzle? 1) the first 2 regions are fine. 2) by the time they get to the third region (12:00), the beginner has no recourse except to do a brute force listing of all (there are about 15) possibilities, and examining them for conflicts. at this point, the beginner loses patience. 3) then it gets harder. while it is still reasonably possible to do more brute force lists of a couple more regions, it gets even harder after that, and no results have yet been obtained. even the most stubborn beginner now walks away. and what happens overall? the beginner goes back to LMG, and tries another one-star difficulty puzzle, and again is unable to make any progress. and now the beginner concludes that this great archive of sudoku puzzles has a big red flag "beginners, go away". and while that is NOT the INTENTION, it is the RESULT.
