Dr Chris van Tulleken explores why children are taking more prescription drugs than ever before…
He looks into one of the biggest health crises facing young people: Depression. The number of children in Britain being treated with drugs for depression almost doubled from 2005 to 2015. Dr Chris wants to know why so many children are being given these meds and whether they actually work…
He discovers that most anti-depressants are not effective in children, while there is also a very real risk of them having increased harmful thoughts. He meets 15 year-old Jess who is so anxious she hardly leaves her bedroom. Over several months, and with Chris’s help, she takes up Wilderness Therapy. It’s a tough and emotional journey as Jess struggles with school, exams, and every day interactions. But by her 16th birthday Jess discovers she has made amazing progress.
Chris also looks into a medicine that’s rise in use dwarfs even the doubling of anti-depressants for teenagers. Prescriptions for milk formula to treat babies with Cow’s Milk allergy rose by almost 500% in the ten years to 2016 and prescriptions for this formula is now costing the UK's National Health Service over £64 million GBP a year.
When he attends a training day for NHS staff he finds advertising and sponsorship by the same company that makes the formula to treat the allergy! He concludes that we are muddling up advertising with science and healthcare and is shocked that we’re allowing big formula companies to promote this condition, a condition that they profit from treating.
As diagnoses and sales have all gone up, Dr Chris questions whether letting big business get involved in healthcare could get between our children and their health.

I also wanted to note that I have a schoolmate that was on these anti-depressants in high school in the 90s. He ended up being picked on by a school bully. He went home and got his dad's hunting riffle on lunch, went back to school and waited for the bully to exit the school's field after football practice and then shot him. He just sat down and waited for the cops. Come to find out he was most likely bi polar and even stated he was hearing voices to his therapist prior to the incident. He got worse on the meds. He was the Valedictorian in his graduating class, active in church and a great student until his depression and meds. He is now serving a life sentence with NO possibility of parole even though he is in a christian band, talks with kids about prison and teaches adult classes for the system. These medication side effects were unknown in the 90s and people did not realize that they could cause aggression, deepening depression and suicide in children. If you look at many of the homicidal child cases you will find a lot of them have anti depression and anxiety meds in common. The way we treat mental "illness" needs to change.

Hate to tell you but they did know in the 90s about the side effects. It's always been right there in the literature you should be getting every time someone gets a prescription (though how many people read every single word of what's on it...but they should). One of the side effects has always been suicidal ideation for most psych meds, especially for young people. So sorry for this young man and the family of the boy that was killed...a tragedy all round. In the USA we don't have a mental healthcare system, it's a mental illness management system which are two VERY different ways of approaching things. What we have now has very little to do with achieving mental health using drugs as a last resort instead of a first resort (unless things are in a state of crisis and immediate medication is warranted). And if you are put on medication, it seems as though there's no effort made, or possibility, to ever get off them even if it's an option. ❤☮🌎

My heart breaks for the poor 15yo girl and I hope she gets better in the long run. However, at first glance she doesn't seem depressed at all to me. Also seems like the antidepressants are just used as a scapegoat for those around her. The pills certainly didn't misdiagnose her. Feels like there's lots of coping going on here.

I been on psych meds since 13 yrs old and I'm almost 32 yrs olds and suffered with mental health since 13 yrs old but my life started crashing earlier than that at age 11 yrs old but my childhood was worst than that with childhood PTSD and ADHD at 5 yrs old and diagnosed with ADHD at 22 yrs old again. I'm in the USA of Illinois. Depressive drugs are all bad they all cause suicidal thoughts and self harm thoughts and reoccurring depression and night terrors. My Ativan helps me with my topomax the best combination but I don't have bipolar I have BPD two different things. Doctors these days label us and just think they can treat us like guinea pigs but if we stick up for ourselves and tell them no doc I'm not taking that it doesn't help it causes this or what I did I refused the meds and threw them away and finally found the right medications and finally the doctors listened to me because I kept on refusing and throwing away meds that didn't help me or caused an adverse affect on me or I was allergic to the medication. You have a voice use it it's your body not an experiment stop letting doctors use yours a lab rat that's not what you are. You are you, you are a human, you are somebody, you mean something, speak up, and tell your story and don't let doctors treat you like a lab rat or an experiment because you are not one because I was treated like one and it was an experience that I went through and I learned on my own and I want to share to the world that don't allow doctors allow authority over your body and what you put in your body. Stand up for yourself and start speaking up for yourself

Chris has other material where he investigates ultra processed foods. I don’t remember if it’s him or another person that mentions it but they’re starting to link diet with depression and Alzheimer’s and I saw a video where a 400lb guy changed his diet to lose weight and it also helped with his bipolar symptoms. I’m not claiming it would help you specifically but cooking your own food from whole ingredients and cutting back sugar and vegetable oils and all the other food additives certainly won’t hurt you.

My son had issues keeping milk down the day he was born. It was so bad he lost weight in the 3 days we were in the hospital and my "dr" literally called DHS on my because the nurses told her I refused to listen to them when in fact I was pushing for more testing done on my son. I was nursing and it was my goal to give him the best care I could. Needless to say, because he continued to throw up most of what I fed him, I couldn't keep up with his needs. He was nursing every 30 minutes to 2 hours and I was a student in college at the time and physically couldn't keep up so went on formula feeling like a failure. Returning to my dr she told me it was colic and that I needed to swap over from the cows milk based formula to soy formula which was better handled on baby's stomachs. That still didn't help. He most likely had an underdeveloped sphincter muscle in his stomach. She said he'd outgrow the issue by the time he was walking. He didn't and continued to have stomach issues. He's 25 now and suffers from anxiety, depression and still has stomach problems. We now know that soy formula changes the gut biome in baby's stomachs and has a high amount of aluminum. Both of those account for his present state. Word of advice, best way to feed your baby is nursing.....PERIOD. Advocate for your kids and get second opinions and even a third if necessary. Don't simply accept treatment of symptoms, but advocate for a true diagnosis.

I really like this documentary and series, while I do agree that meds can be VERY harmful and other treatments can be better and safer we still need a lot more work on treatments. I wish there we way more medical tratments/facilities that helped kids and teens succeed and were more available to all. I also wish there were more medical but safer ways to help teens long term and balance what is going on.

I am from Romania . I lived in Canada for 22 years, before returning to live quietly back home. When I immigrated to Canada, back in the 90’s I was amazed by how many crazy people were there everywhere , how many addicted people especially young , and by how so many people were allergic, asthmatic and diabetic, no to talk about the many obese I was seeing. It was like I was arriving in another world... Of sick people... British people should be thankful to the more then 1 million Romanians living now in Uk because they would improve the British people genome ... Romanians are way healthier mentally and overall... Corporate Capitalism and their marketing are destroying the fibre of the society. Corporate intensive agriculture , I suspect that is the source of all the diseases. I remember how the media from The Uk was showing how incipient the agriculture in Romania , made on a small plots of land and with horse carriage... That agriculture and way of living brought up healthy and strong Romanians. I am watching now in desperation how the state of Romanian society health is falling on the same path of our British friends ...

I have worked in inpatient psychiatric facilities before and do agree some of these medications are severely over prescribed and not necessary. HOWEVER, speaking from my own experience, I was put on one of these a little over a year ago and am greatly benefitting from it (and also therapy). I believe they are designed to be an adjunct with other treatments (counseling, etc).

I think a lot of allergy symptoms are a build up of casomorphines from A1 caesin intolerance more so than lactose intolerance. You can supplement lactase which corrects almost all lactose intolerances. To avoid A1 caesin you need to source specialised a2 cow dairy or have sheep or goats dairy.

Adhd and depression are different. If someone needs antifepressand also there may be additional difficulty then adhd in my opinion. Keep in mind I am just a mother of 2 ADD and 1 ADHD. I also suffer from ADHD. I think challenges of ADHD can make life si much more challenging and worsen symptoms qualified as depression. Robust activity, challenging work and hyper organisation and regular talk therapy has been useful. Sadly life in school doesn't really allow for an ADHD to spread their wings in the way needed. I also strongly believe the side effect experienced with the adhd meds can worsen delression and anxiety. It causes a painful internal rumbling. Special with dose is too high.

As a nurse who myself has ADHD and a son with ADHD and a son & daughter who have ADD the medication route for any of us was awful. If you have an organized environment and structured routine you don't need to rely on medication. You also need to be understanding and patient with your child. Parents today don't want to take the time to engage with their children and just want to scream and yell, rather than teach them how to control themselves or their behavior. We might learn a bit differently, or may need more frequent breaks, soothing background music or a quiet out of the way spot to calm ourselves, but swallowing a pill that speeds up the central nervous system never helped any of us in fact Ritalin caused my son to go into psychosis.

If able to, new mothers should breast feed their babies which makes the worries about cow's milk non-existent. (I'm not criticizing women who want to breast feed but are unable to.) I don't think it is ok to have this kinda attitude about anti depression drugs while they only looked into like what- one study? I know many many many people who do take sertralin after not believing in anti depressiva and therefore changing the drug (for example they had something like fluroxetine and decided to take sertralin) and they got so much better. It is totally irresponsable to just say "sugar pills are better than that" because I have seen the struggle people have with depression, especially teens and I know that many might say it got worse once they started taking anti depressiva but many people with depression have this kinda attitude towards drugs so they start talking themselves into something called "self-fullfilling prophacy" (sorry for my bad english). Years after that they start to realise how they actually got better because of the medicine they took. I'm not saying these based on one person. I'm working in this kind of field with teens and honestly, those who are given sertralin turn out to get much better (at least many of them)

same. I find this sort of presentation a bit harmful because it might deter parents from agreeing to medication for their kid even though it might be absolutely necessary. obviously it should be closely monitored by a psychiatrist and combined with therapy, but for moderate - severe depression, therapy alone is not enough, and I believe studies support that. also the oxford doctor said "only fluoxetine, ON AVERAGE, was better than placebo", so that doesn't mean the others don't work for all individuals, especially since it's only one study. so based on only that, especially in severe cases, I'd always try medication. sertraline isn't always a good fit for someone with extreme anxiety like jess though; it can make anxiety worse, especially at doses of over 100mg, so she might benefit more from sth. like escitalopram.

I beg to differ , if you eat a clean diet, exercise, find a therapist to talk, there is no such need to even take one of these pills to treat "depression" if you think these people ( including myself ) feel great after taking Setraline (Zoloft),perhaps you should go to the forum to se for yourself how many of us are trying to come off these drugs and that we have to taper off slowly and have to endure some unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Its not days of coming off them completely and be fine ,its months and years of tapering and having to cope with the inifinte time frame for a full recovery. This is literally a living hell going each time we make a reduction on our dosage .

@@persephone342 what is ignorant about breastfeeding? My mother who was a midwife as well as nurse said back in the day the majority of women did not use money for formula unless the infant rejected the breast or there was a nutritional problem with the mother or child. It's honestly harmful to keep spreading this idea that pills are always automatically bad. Some depression needs medical intervention or a child can actually die. Meditation does not work for every child with ADHD, especially when hyperactivity isn't the main problem. It would be more helpful to try and catch these diseases early, put up a treatment plan (with meds only if necessary), and encourage kids to talk about their mental needs.

People don't even take supplements and nootropics for extended periods due to receptor cite downregulation. People cycle on and off to keep receptor cites healthy. Ritalin just causes depression and psychosis in later life. It depletes dopamine. Shikimate acid dysfunction in the soil is responsible for aromatic amino acid deficiency and without adequate dietary tyrosine phenylalanine and tryptophan people are low in dopamine AND serotonin plus if you're iodine deficient which most are your enteroendocrine cells can't produce serotonin via gut bacteria either this is why people benefit from dopamine and serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Most who are on these then go on to take D2 blockers due to receptor cite damage. Please don't spread misinformation based on ideology. The "medications" ruin far more lives than they save.
