This Hashimoto's symptoms list explains why patients with Hashi's struggle. You'll also learn about Hashimoto's flare ups and what causes them.
There are 4 main categories of symptoms that patients with Hashimoto's can experience. These symptoms of Hashimoto's change based on a number of factors which are important for you to understand.
You should also be aware that Hashimoto's symptoms can CHANGE and FLUCTUATE over time! It's possible for you to be hypothyroid and then hyperthyroid and then back to hypothyroid. This roller-coaster of symptoms can make it difficult for patients to really understand what is happening in their bodies.
I have broken up the symptoms of Hashimoto's into 4 main categories:
#1. Hypothyroid symptoms.
MOST patients with Hashimoto's will experience predominately hypothyroid symptoms throughout the progression of their disease. Hypothyroid symptoms come from DAMAGE to the thyroid gland. The more damage to the thyroid gland more hypothyroid you will feel.
Symptoms in this category include an increase in weight, a decrease in energy, an increase in hair loss, a decrease in body temperature, a decrease in heart rate, an increase in depression, and cold interolance.
#2. Hyperthyroid symptoms.
SOME patients with Hashimoto's may ALSO experience the symptoms of Hashimoto's periodically throughout the progression of their disease.
Hyperthyroid symptoms include weight loss, low energy, increased heart rate, decrease body temperature, hair loss, anxiety, tremors, and heat intolerance.
Patients with Hashimoto's can go in and out of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid symptoms depending on their body.
#3. Euthyroid.
Occasionally, but not often, you can feel just fine despite having elevated antibodies.
#4. Immune system mediated symptoms.
Lastly, patients with Hashimoto's can ALSO experience symptoms associated with immune dysfunction. These symptoms stem from issues with the immune system which then trigger damage to the thyroid gland.
Symptoms in this category include:
Rash, flu-like symptoms, mild fever, headaches, malaise, constantly getting sick, feeling run down, slight depression, and mild joint pain.
These symptoms indicate that your immune system is flaring and may be a sign of a Hashimoto's flare-up.
When you have a Hashimoto's flare-up you can experience the symptoms of hypo/hyperthyroidism PLUS the symptoms of immune dysfunction (listed above).

I was diagnosed with hypothyrodism 6 yrs ago, from then on i take eltroxin 100 mcg daily and it was kind of stable, then i went and had shockwave treatment on my lower back and neck after that it is been 6 month now, my joints are hurting, unprecedented fatigue, got peripheral nerves inflammation, my eyes are exhausted. Before shockwave my Tsh and t4 was at normal range now it is 0.057, T4 1.81.

Thank you so much Dr. Child’s! I have been hypo and hyper for 45 yrs and been told I was having anxiety, I’m sorry, but that’s the way most doctors handle patients that have the problem of being both. One thing is for sure you know without a doubt when you are getting too much thyroid medicine, it’s a horrible feeling. When it happens to me I cut my meds in half and if I start having hypo symptoms I slowly increase my meds back up to what I was taking, I have to take it into my own hands or my doctor sends me to the heart doctor and I’m put thru all kinds of test only to be told everything is fine. They don’t listen when you tell them I’m getting to much thyroid medicine. Thank you again for showing us this is a real problem for some patients with hashimotos.

Hypo Immune.... I haven’t felt good for 4 years, endlessly trying to figure out why.??1 year ago I was diagnosed Hashimoto. I Started w/Endrochronologist, giving me Thyroid meds. At the same time I had 2 iron infusions for anemia/low ferritin.I felt a lot better a in June, then I had for years, But Sadly it hasn’t lasted long, I started slowly not feeling then started to have more bad days then good. I took your bloodwork list to my Primary Dr, and got them done. I am planning on emailing my results to you, in hope of you reading them and you understanding what is going on, so I can start feeling myself again. It’s hard to just survive the symptoms every day and not be thriving like I always have. Thank You for all your dedication to wanting to help others.

I have a very strong family history of this (eleven family members on my dad's side)...I have horrible hypo symptoms but my labs are normal or borderline (but tsh fluctuates up and down drastically). It seems much, much worse with extreme stress - that's when I get the flu like symptoms, extreme achy muscles and joints...my hair falls out in handfuls(eyebrows and eyelashes too) and I swell up like a balloon. But my labs are normal so they tell me this is normal.

Great presentation Dr Childs. I’ve been watching your vids for a couple of years now. I live down under in Aus and have been wondering if jumping a jet to the US is my last resort. Have been diagnosed with hashi’s now just over 4 years. The perfect storm just came together is what my doctors told me. Stress, diet, life, and maybe even environmental however Levo T4 was the only med to treat it. I was fit and excercising before the storm but diet was pretty average i would have to say. After two years of taking Levo with dosage rollercoasting the entire period I’m convinced my body doesn’t like it and doesn’t convert it very well so found myself an integrative dr that would allow me to entertain T3 and NDT. I am at my wits end with this “dis-ease” in my body as symptoms appear to move like on your whiteboard between hypo and hyper with the only exception of the cold intolerance occurred in the beginning then left and never returned. If anything, heat intolerance is constant. I have plenty of hair but i do see it on my pillow but i still keep producing plenty of it. I need proper help to find my root cause so I can focus in on treating that to hopefully return some quality of life so as not to think i am now only existing on the planet but more so participating in it. Weight is up 12kg which I’ve carried for 2 years now and i know is moderate compared to some people but I’m just not used to having it as was previously a half marathon runner. My dizziness is now daily and i just want to be sedentary and remain seated as feel unsteady under foot which of course won’t help the metabolic processes and thus just feel I’m beginning to just “rust up”. It’s like my toes almost try to claw into the ground with each step to find the stability required to walk. Brain fog was featuring but since got onto a good B1 and Focus & Memory supplement that seems to be working for the best part. However it can feel like the brain “breaks wind’ every now and then and just feels like mush momentarily. The inflammation i feel is pretty much from the waist down, my quads, hamstrings and buttocks muscle spasm/twitch regularly and feel like they are “alive” and sweat way more than they used to. Always clammy, pants always damp, legs get patches of a burning sensation, like they are sunburnt but never are. Like someone is giving me a Chinese burn. Happens regularly around the front of ankles. Anxiety comes and goes but of late has gone up a tier and now makes me breathless when i speak. I take 2.5grains (1 cap) NDT daily upon waking up and another at midday on only one other day in the week where my stress maybe higher. Last bloods TSH was 3.4. Any help to steer me in the right direction appreciated.

Thank you! SO very helpful. My Symptoms started a year ago with Auto Immune stuff, trocrruing flues with high fevers of 104 and needing medical attention for it.: Partial Alopecia, hair falling out in clumps and patches, I miscarried, had brain fog and fatigue and constipation. My life came to a hault! At that time, my TSH levels were normal and so my doctor felt there was no "Empirical Evidence" to suggest it was Auto Immune, I worked with a functional nutritionalist who said I had all the symptoms of HYPO thryroidsim or Hashimotos so she treated me for leaky guy with supplements with an AIP Paleo Diet and I recover after months . Recently I have had a relapse perhaps from diet or stress, and have extreme fatigue and shortness of breath where I just feel like I can't get air in my lungs. My panel this week showed I have high LDL cholesterol levels. This points to Thyroid issues right? My doctor is considering something called WILSONS SYNDROME, and has me checking my temperature...which is low temperature Hypothyroidism and is suggesting large amounts of t3 as a treatment. It seems this Syndrome is not recognized by the medical community. Do you know anything about that? I think this all seems like Hashimotos. I would love your feedback. .....And thank you!

Wow, I finally understood everything that a non-doctor needs to know about Hashimoto's, thank you!! When I was 20, my mother took me to Endocrinologist just in case, because she has thyroid issues my TSH was normal, but antibodies were awful and I also didn't feel normal, but my doctor convinced me I'm fine now at 26 I'm continuing my thyroid journey due to excessive hypothyroid symptoms, in order to hopefully get my life quality on somehow normal level, depressed states and panic attacks, awful gain weight, fatigue and just chronic apathy are not doing me anything good

Wow! You explained this so well! Thank you! I have had hashimoto's since like 2010 always showing hypothyroidism symptoms never having normal range tsh(always between 6-11) but t4 and t3 normal range. It's been a year exactly I have had uncontrollable anxiety, insomnia..literally only slept a few times a month recently been put on sedatives to make me sleep, heart palpitations to where I can like hear and feel my heart beat so fast and more. Both doctors say its unrelated. Latest TSH just show .18 but doc says just a little low and stop taking meds for a while. I feel like crap. Two days ago it was overwhelming emotions and heart beating.....I feel like the docs think I'm being dramatic.

When o was first sick in 2008ish I present with massive joint pain and I felt like I was burning from the inside out, had to have fluid drawn from my knees, could barely walk. They ran all the tests ana tests and thyroid tests and they were all crazy high bit treating me like it was two separate things...so they sent me to a rheumatologist for joints and swelling and endo for everything else. I just have a hard time thinking things are unrelated. So now with insomnia and anxiety and all the other things they are saying are not related to my thryoid..😕

My experience with the different symtoms has been confusing, since I also have bipolar disorder. So it has been diffucult to dishtinguish between some of the symptoms at times. And I have had to convince healthcare personell to run the tests at times, because they assume that im fatigued because of my bipolar disorder. This happened to me 2 weeks ago, I had to convince them to run the tests. And the test showed iron and b12 deficiency. Now as I got the supplements, I am feeling a lot better and I have the energy to educate myself about my hashimotos with videos like this one. Im starting to make some success in understanding the disease better, for the first time after very long periods of inability to learn and remember new information. Appreciate these videos! I've been diagnosed hypothyroidism for over 9 years. I've never been told I have hyper symptoms but I do. My toes and fingers stay cold but the rest of my body is hot and I sweat so easily. I lose feeling in my limbs. Constant headaches and muscle/joint pain. So incredibly tired all the time. Like there are days where I dont even want to lift my body to walk to another room for food or anything. Anxiety is high because I'm not cleaning the house like it needs to be. I feel worthless sometimes because of it. I was just diagnosed with lab work for having Hashimoto's Disease.

I understand exactly what you're going through. I've had the classic hypothyroidism all my life. I've had lifelong depression. I always have a low body temperature around 96. Very tired and exhausted. Constipation. Gallbladder disease because of gallstones. Very dry and itchy skin. I'm 35 and since I've done an low oxalate diet my hair is falling out and getting really thin. Oxalates get stored in the thyroid and in my opinion cause hashimoto's.

Works for me, too. If I stay away from gluten, dairy, and sugar I’m fine. When I fall off the wagon and eat breads, ice cream or sweets, I get rashes (very minor and most people would not realize but after going on and off paleo/keto I can feel the slight bumpiness on my tummy when I eat the carbs) and discomfort where my goiter is located so that must be the inflammation responses being talked about in this video. Eating only meat, vegetables, and fruits keeps me feeling fine.

Hi Dr. this is very helpful. In February my gynecologist sent me for blood work: my T4, free was low (also vit D low and cholesterol high but that I always assumed it’s in my family, so normal), this time also my triglycerides were high (and I am 18% body fat). I went to see an endocrinologist and from last week blood work it looks like my antibodies are high but TSH and T4, free are normal. I feel more the immune related symptoms, I feel my lymph nodes are inflamed like flu symptoms and actually my hands are always very hot, not happy, low energy and a feel of malese, migraines more frequent than usual. Today I went to see my family doctor for the yearly check up, when I mentioned the cholesterol she said, but you always had it high also before so it’s not related to your thyroid, and actually your thyroid works just fine, it’s only that you have an inflammation in the body :(. But at least she prescribed an ultrasound to the thyroid. I am feeling I am in a flare state, lasting 3 weeks. At the last comment of my husband: must be menopause and not taking me seriously I was really upset. Thanks for the information, maybe I am still in time to do something about it.

Not able to work, drive, and function properly throughout the day. I have brain fog, major insomnia: I'm awake all night until the next morning around 7:00 am and will sleep about 4 hours. I anxious, irritable, have gained 40 pounds in the last 7 years. From 2017 till present i gained 15 pounds out of the 40 pounds. I have been gluten free, exercise does not help me loose weight and calorie counting did not help either. I have problems at times with speaking, I recently started getting tremors in my finger, hands, and toes. I get migraines a lot, butterfly rash, off balance at times, sunlight and bright lights bother me, when I to the car I am beat red on face and chest, tachycardia and i had an ablation last month for SVT's.

I have practically every symptom you have discribed . I recently was at Cardiologist and they have started new heart meds for severe PAC's and PVC's. If this doesn't help them an abliation is next. I take Armour Thyroid 2 grains a day and still feel like crap. I would give anything to feel better. Good luck to you.

Thank you for your educational series about this frustrating condition. I fit the 1st cat but I recently have been experiencing an odd "joint pain" listed in your last cat. What is so confusing about it (dr doesn't know how to treat it) is that the on-and-off-pain is in my clavicle bone & joint and travels up my neck and back of my head sometimes. The clavicle bone is enlarged - this is how I've figured something was going on. This popped up few months ago. I have had general blood tests done to look for causes, such as cancer or rheumatoid arthritis and they came back normal. Could this be related to Hashimoto's flare up?

I am not on medication but have been on thyroid supplements for approximately 4 months now. I'll will be interesting to see my lab results again. I'd like to avoid medication if at all possible and wondering if my next lab results levels have improved is it safe to keep off meds and make sure I am at good levels with the supplements I was low on.

This video made so much sense to me. I am in the immune category. I have days of feeling normal and all the sudden I will wake up feeling sick or like I'm getting the flu and feel so weak. I will even get a slight cough. Then after a couple days I will feel fine again. I get a lot of bad headaches or migraines too. What can I do to stop this or help it? When I feel bad I usually take vitamin c and garlic and ginger and that helps a lot. Is my immune system weak during those times or is it over reacting? What can I do about it. I'm so tired of feeling so bad.

This has been very helpful to understand my symptoms and where to categorize them. I was just recently diagnosed with Hashimoto desease about a week ago. But for 6 years I have been trying to have my doctors tell me what is going on with me because I have had these symptoms for that long. I had to request for several opinions and for them to do a hormonal panel to see where I was with my hormones because I suspected something was wrong as soon as the symptoms started progressing and becoming more intense. I have both hypo and hyper symptoms but you said in the video that can happen correct? currently my OBGYN prescribed me with supplements from PURE vitamins/full script to treat my Hashimoto. However, I don’t know if that is the best treatment?? How can one know if the holistic way is the right way to treat Hashimoto or if I should request the actual medication/hormonal replacement therapy? That is where I am confused. I am currently taking Thyroid support complex, Vitamin D3, Dim Detox and Pure melt vitamin B 12 lozenges. Plus supplements for my cortisol (cortisol manager ) . Am I doing the right thing? I saw your other video on what would be the best diet as well, thank you for that guidance, I found it to be helpful. Especially after 6 years of living with these symptoms and being rushed out of every doctor’s office before I can even ask any questions :(

I am just at the start of this journey...so glad I didnt develop it younger. Re the moods symptoms, I am a clinical psychologist and never heard of this as a cause of depression or anxiety, what an eye opener! I myself was FRUSTRATED when I first had symptoms and and difficulty finding scientific information. SO much was testimonials with no scientific methodology at all just random... this made me feel better eg diets, dietary limitations, supplements, etc etc. I was not depressed or anxious but I had rapidly cyling high and low blood pessure diagnosed via a 24 hr halter moitor ...that together with the rapid heart beat I experienced mimics anxiety. I also can understand that the frustration I felt could be described as anxiety and finding no relevant info could be labeled or felt by some as depression......Sybil Francis PhD clinical psychologist

He had started me on PTU but my regular dr stopped it because all levels were normal. However my symptoms are crazy!!!!! I experience the ups and downs freezing, extreme sweating, wt gain/ loss and I have not been treated for anything since 2012! My numbers are always borderline or just barely elevated or low so nothing is done And I can’t see an endocrinologist without a referral.... now I’m experiencing joint pain, fevers, headaches, freezing and eye pain as well as just a feeling of Blah!! But not like I normally do when I’m sick. I wish you were closer to me!!

I started with thyroiditis 30+ years ago and was on cytomel and felt normal for years thanks to a great doctor and Cytomel. Now the autoimmune part is causing me to have hard symptoms like syncope, inflammation, joint pain, muscle loss, rashes, nausea, foggyness and I've had a couple hyper symptoms now, so my new doctor (because my 30 year doctor retired) won't help me. He thinks I have R.A. or some other other autoimmune and believes i never had a thyroid issue according to my bloodwork. New endo. cut out my cytomel and started me on Synthroid and the past year I have gotten worse and worse and he won't help me. Im suffering and feeling depressed like I'm dying and I have several specialists focusing on several different symptoms. I was confused, like the doctors, but this makes so much sense. Thank you.

I have stopped all meds, last 2 days, b/c of temp increase, etc. after taking it. My endocrinologist gets mad when I do this, but the sx’s are brutal. Every single one you’ve mentioned. What are some things I can do to help alleviate this flare? Thanks again for all the help you offer on your channel

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 10 years ago. My endocrinologist says I have Hashimoto's with a capital H. I was only on levothyroxine 25 MCG once throughout this time and I'm always euthyroid. However my TPO goes anywhere from 400 almost 5,000 so I have a lot of hypo and Hyper symptoms. It really sucks. Although I must admit lately I have been feeling okay for the firsr time in about 4 years.I started working with a chiropractor that does muscle response testing and I found out I was allergic to a lot of foods that I had no idea of. When I stop eating these Foods my palpitations went from 10+ times a day to once every couple of days and I have finally been able to go back to the gym after about four years. I know some people don't believe in muscle response testing but I was desperate and I figured what can it hurt. I tried evrything else. I was so glad I went in with an open mind because it was "different". I know there are some quacks out there but not all natural physicians are quacks. I guess you have to use discernment. Good luck

I've recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism after having suffered most of the hypo symptoms for a while. However, I have heat intolerance, low HR but high systolic BP so I know I get mixed symptoms. Autoimmune conditions run in my family and I am post menopausal, so there has been an awful lot of overlap of symptoms although I always suspected hormonal imbalance, I just thought it was menopause for a long time. I did a thyroid home test a couple of years ago which came back normal but recent blood tests have indicated increasing TSH levels. I've been started on levothyroxine and have to go back in a couple of months for more blood tests to see how the dose is working. At least now I have a name for my various hormone problems

Before I knew I had Hashimotos, I had horrible brain fog, hair thinning at the root, weight gain, no joy, heart palpitations, and a high heart rate. I also have hives. Then with LDN, And Whole30, and supplements, I got into remission. I felt good but added NP thyroid. Then I got cocky and fell away from the protocol except the NP Thyroid and LDN. Blood work still looks pretty good, but I have hives again (they are different this time. Show up on my face 5-10 mins) low motivation, hair falling out a lot, and losing weight is very slow. (I need to lose about 20lbs) I upped my LDN to 4.5 from 4mg, NP upped to 75, a grain and 1/4? And I’ve cut out dairy, gluten and sugar. Any thing else I need to do? Ps: these videos are a God-send. I've had my specialists stumped for YEARS because of this yoyo effect ,. I've got meds to raise and lower my heart rate and BP. My TSH has been low to borderline high or low, not spikes. Finally an astute endo diagnosed me with Hashimoto. You see I had thyroid cancer in '93. I had a total thyroidectomy with I-131 treatment for any free radical cells that might be present In 2000, my endo (for diabetes) noticed a small spike in my TSH . A scan showed a small pieces of my thyroid was present. FF to 2019, after a car accident, the ER Dr mentioned I had and enlarged R thyroid gland. Then began a merry chase with a new endo. The R lobe of my thyroid gland grew back and is functioning with a massive goiter on it., but still it was enlarged too.

Dx Back in End of July 2023 with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, After I landed in hospital from an attack of Pericarditis!!! I fit into this category and it's a helluva a ride! I have a lot of cross over between Hypo and Hyper - mostly Hypo and the 'immune response' symptoms are always present on some level. The symptoms that are the worst for me: Fatigue (cannot get out of bed), Brain fog, and a breathlessness with any kind of exertion - so exercise is very difficult for me. Joint pain is terrible and nothing seems to help (ibu/aceto) - I'm not going to lie.... I do edibles at night for sleep, and help with the joint pain/RLS. My Drs are not very sympathetic towards me and just keep saying that my symptoms are mostly like "age related" - I am 53 and only really started eating better and taking better care of myself over the past 5 years. So... I have a few years of living it up like a rockstar under my belt (late nights, excessive drinking, "party drugs", ... so I agree with them to an extent, but only after switiching to AIP diet and cutting out nightshades do I finally feel some relief from the "immune response" symptoms. Thank you for posting and your content! A little validation goes a long way.

I have the "IMMUNE" type. Recently I have rashes come and go. The primary care prescribed me some different types tropical cream to treat my rashes each time. I have been very tired, headache, anxiety, bloated, brain fog, and flu like symptoms but no fever. What should I do, thyroid Dr. won't see me unless I have a referral but my TSH always normal! Only my Thyroid Peroxidase test was high in the pass but haven't checked again for quit a few years.

Hey doc. What does a low T3 mean? I definitely don't feel fine. I get these odd waves of sheer terror and I start shaking. It's very scary.. I've had anxiety, but this feels physical.

Thanks Dr., that's what I wanted to know, I have lost weight, When I go see my Primary Dr. His Nurse tells me" Everythings O.k." I had thinning hair, and then my hair grew back, it fluctuates.!

I was diagnoised with hypothyroidism a year and 2 months ago. in the last 2 months I have tried to lose weight so I tried eating healthier and every time I start this regiment I get extremely sick. and this time I have pain in my foot. I can barely walk on it at times and bones are extremely stiff in that foot when I wake up in the morning. I dont know if It sounds like that immune thing but when I went to the doctor she suggested I get orthopedic shoes and said I have small arches. Ive never had issues with my feet until now.

Is it possible to have both grave's disease and hashimoto's disease? I know its not common, but is it possible? I experience hypothyroid and hyperthyroid symptoms at the same time.

Started my meds last August. First issue was the Synthroid 112mcg gave me the worst headaches I ever had. They lowered my dose to 100mcg, and the headaches stopped. Three days after changing dosage, my throat hurt every day for two months. I stopped taking my Synthroid, and my sore throat stopped. They switched me over to Tirosint 100mcg. I've lost a few pounds, but not much and at my last blood test my results were completely opposite of my 1st blood test. I went from Hypo to Hyper, which was ok because I was losing weight. I know it was ok, so they lowered me down to 88mcg. I had hand tremors start about a week ago. Next blood draw isn't until May. This sucks. I went back and looked at my lab results from the last 10 years and my TSH was elevated and nothing was done. I was given some anti-depressants and sent on my way.

Ablated thyroid at 12 years old because of a goiter. Medical records are no longer available for that procedure. No therapy ever made me feel right so after 45 years and 30 or so doctors and endocrinologists I decided to just start with some Lugols iodine. I'm still cold, tired with dry skin and poor mental energy but my last thyroid panel in 2017 showed that I'm still making t-4 and t-3 but on the low side of range for sure. I don't drink chlorine or fluorine and avoid wheat so no bromine either. The only issue I may still have is lead and mercury toxicity. I don't know I've kinda given up on doctors but I was thinking of just having a panel done to see where I am now . Any Ideas?
