In this video I shot the Zeiss 40mm and 50mm CF FLE side by side and compare the results. Which one should you get? Skip to the conclusion to hear what I think each of these lenses excels at.

Great video Nicolas! I love your content. Very informative and beautiful and it leaves the decision for me to make my own judgement of the gear you're looking at in each video. I'm sure I will go back to these two new videos many times.

Hi! Thanks for stopping by! This is actually my goal for content on YT : something that can be revisited and you’ll pick up different ideas. I think there’s too many youtubers who labour a simple point for 10 minutes... but I know that not everyone learns the same way, so I’m trying to make content for those of us who prefer to be given just a hint, and do the heavy lifting themselves ✌🏻

Thank you so much for these videos, Nicolas! I've been recently looking into wide-angle lenses for my 500c/m but it's been so hard to find a good comparison of the two.... I shoot mainly portraits and the ones of your son, Louis, have been a great reference for me! I don't know if you are aware of that but you've also helped me make a decision with extension tubes a couple of months ago hahaha. Please keep making these great informative videos, I love watching these! :)

Hi, I’m glad I can be helpful. I like the 50mm for portraits, and of course the 150/180mm. The only lens I don’t love shooting portraits with is actually the 80mm. 😅 Do keep in mind that children have very round faces with big eyes, so a wide angle portrait isn’t unflattering for them. Things start to get more complicated with adults, especially thin angular faces, big noses etc... Oh, and if you have some extension rings, the 50mm makes a fun macro lens! If I remember right it goes to 1:1 magnification with a 32mm extension.

@@nicolaslevy2657 I'm only shooting portraits on the 80mm as it's my only lens hahaha. I might look into the 150mm! But I keep hearing great things from the 120mm... And great news about the 32mm extension ring! I actually picked up an 8mm + 32mm for very cheap. :) Merci beaucoup, Nicolas!

Nice review. There is another way to use circular filters with the 40mm lens. Remove the Hasselblad retaining ring and fit an 86-95 adapter and use 95mm filters. Not a cheap option but it works well. I have modified a Lee filter holder with Sugru putty so that it now friction fits onto the lens (or a 95mm filter) without needing an adapter ring. To avoid vignetting, I’ve also fitted H&Y magnetic strips in place of the filter holder slots and magnetic frames to my Lee filters.

Great video and good comparison. I was only disappointed that you did not include the CF 60mm/3.5 Distagon. IMO, it is probably the best walk-around and general purpose lens for Hasselblad. FWIW - looking at Ebay and other sources for used Zeiss lenses, it is downright difficult to find a CF 40 lens with both caps and retaining rings!!

I haven’t owned the 60mm on hasseblad, but I used the 65mm on the Mamiya for a couple of years and was super happy with it as an only travel lens. I spent most of 2023 shooting a mamiya 6 with a 50mm and it’s a great focal length for me. Allows me to do people with a decent depth of field but without standing too close either. Since that video I have been lucky enough to find a yellow and a red filter for the 40mm. Now I feel like I have a very complete set!

Back in the 1990's I bought a new 501CM when they were first introduced. At the time I had a little more disposable income so I opted NOT to buy the 80mm lens. Instead I purchased the CF 60/3.5 & CF 100/3.5. They were an ideal pair together. Later, I purchased the CF 40/4 FLE. So, together I had 40, 60, 100 lenses which I have always thought to be the best generic combination of Zeiss lenses. However, economically speaking, the 80 could replace the 60 & 100, while the 50 could replace the 40 & 60 combo. 3 weeks ago I purchased a used 501CM ( built in 2001) with a CFE 80 lens & A12-IV back. I also purchased a CF 50 FLE lens. So totally opposite of what I did in the 1990's! In the tradition of Ansel Adams, he recommended in one of his books to buy the 50, 80, 150, 250 combo. Now owning a 50 & 80, I'm still out to lunch as to any possible further lenses - 40, 120, 150, 250. Note - I don't really have any need for the 250, but they seem to be the least expensive CF lens on the used market, and for the average price, seems a no-brainer to own one.

For my Hasselblad 501 CM I use the 50mm lens, I don't have the 40mm lens. However, I use the 60mm lens the most. The difference between the 40mm and the 50mm isn't even that stark when compared directly.

@nicolaslevy2657
@nicolaslevy2657 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, I do not have a Rolleiflex. I used to have a couple Mamiya C330s before the Hassy. The Mamiyas were really nice to use handheld, great walk around/documentary cameras. I don’t like the hassy as much for this kind of use. Probably comes down to how nicely the C330 hangs on a strap, and that the CF lenses’ focusing rings are a bit stiff for my taste. At the moment I only use the Hasselblad on a tripod in posed/staged situations, and I don’t own a true walk around film camera anymore. I gotta say digital plays that role a bit better for me. But whenever a tripod is involved and I’m making more “intentional” pictures, film is still king.

@@nicolaslevy2657 ah I just checked your extension tube video and it was a Hasselblad Voile! I want to basically find a relatively fast agile medium format camera that I can use for my natural light fashion portraits. I think the hasselblad is good because it is mechanical and quite small. I do like the idea of the versatility of the rolleiflex though. I don't like pentax 67 or mamiya 67 series because their form factor is a hinderance. What do you think?
@nicolaslevy2657
@nicolaslevy2657 3 жыл бұрын
@@MattJungJinChoi For what you describe I would use a camera that is more meant to be hand-held. Either a rangefinder, like a Mamiya 6 or 7 (I had both, they’re great cameras !) or a SLR like a Mamiya 645. The Pentax 67 is a beast, but there is a reason SLR cameras have taken over the photography world and made TLRs obsolete... It’s a design that just works. For fashion I would rather go for a Mamiya 645 because it’s smaller, has interchangeable backs, and you get much more frames per roll, but I understand the love for the big 6x7 negs... I agree with you that the RB/RZ67 are really impractical cameras for hand-held work. It’s kind of funny to see how popular they are with a lot of KZfaqrs. I had one years ago and I couldn’t sell it fast enough. 😅

@@nicolaslevy2657 Hahaha intereting these massive MF cameras are getting so much hype. I love currently shooting with my leica m2 + m262 with my zeiss lenses but I do want a MF camera that I can travel with that I can enjoy shooting landscapes and portraits from time to time. I had a mamiya 645 super interestingly but hated the plastic construction and also the unreliable battery operated shutter.

Great video! Can you explain the "EV-scale" on the lenses, and how to use it?
@nicolaslevy2657
@nicolaslevy2657 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I’ve never used the EV scale, I think it’s a remnant from an era before the ISO standard, when light meters measured in EV rather than give you an aperture/shutter speed couple. Maybe it’s useful for zone system users? One thing I do use is this great switch on the aperture ring that lets you change both the aperture and shutter speed at the same time, while keeping the same exposure. This is useful for example with flash, if you decide to open a stop to make your flash brighter but want the exposure from ambient light on your background to stay the same. This is not a complicated setting change, but in the heat of the moment I’ve been known to adjust one setting and forget another, or have a giant brain fart and change the shutter speed in the wrong direction. With that switch you don’t need to think about it, just adjust your aperture and let the camera sync the shutter speed. 🤗

one thing I noticed, while you shot, you used 1/4 sec. the thing is, you must WAIT before letting the shutter button, (or cable release) go , the orange strip is there for a reason, this illustrates the shutter speeds LONGER than the back baffels' closing speed, hence a need to wait until the shutter closes, the click noise, otherwise you run a risk of cutting off the exposure prematurely, ie: as soon as the baffel, NOT the shutter, closes!, this only applies to the speeds under the orange strip, 1/15th and faster are FINE, just the slower ones.

I find that there’s a house difference in perspective between 40mm and 50mm on the Hasselblad 6x6 format. 50mm doesn’t seem quite wide enough and the 40mm feels much more equivalent to 28mm in 35mm format. Both are extremely good lenses though 👍

Whoa there, THE 40 mm i think can have the front element removed and insert a ~38 mm Back attached filter ( on the rear of the rear element of the front half). these are included in the case ( behind 4 studded flaps on the case lid). 4 filters, Y, G, R, and a clear, necessary for optical design!!

I wasn’t aware that such a thing existed. The Hasselblad system is really amazing in the amount of accessories and the flexibility of the system. Do you have to manually advance the film to fit the new frame size? Or is there a way to modify a back to advance the film only half a frame at a time…

But keep in mind that with the new “affordable” digital back for Hasselblad, demand (and price) for these cameras and lenses is only gonna go up 😉 And the wide lenses will be especially sought after because of the crop factor of digital backs...
