Actually, I was most intrigued on first sight by the landscape framed by the railway compartment. But the others are also "wow" ....

Based on the examples you highlighted, most of what I see isn't photography. It's graphic design a la Photoshop. Overprocessing, compositing and staging isn't photography as I envision it. I challenge anyone to actually encounter some of these scenes in real life and make a photograph of it without the embellishments.

I second this. We are at a point that we are making up stuff. I’m amazed how these picture make no sense, and people try to make up a meaning for them.

I would like to agree with you on all points. Isn't it interesting how this is also a reflection of society in recent decades? How not only our values but also our perspectives are shifting? For me, these photos have no soul, no life, let alone empathy. In terms of actual and true photography, I can't find any aspects here.

My initial reaction seeing some of the stuff, most of it, was wanting to sell my hasselblads... So much of it is photoshopped into oblivion, and the rest thats not, looks then like the photo on the beach of the guy under the umbrella... ART! 😂

Once again I appreciate the thought-provoking commentary throughout this video. Once thing that did attract my attention about the images was the number of them that have a very soft, almost washed-out palette. Is this a thing in current competitions? There didn't seem to be a very wide range of lighting: must go and check the site for myself I guess. Thank you again Alex for the inspiration you challenge me with in every one of your presentations.

Great video! I think the images of the trees and greenish water is a cypress swap, like in Louisiana. What grabs me about these images is the simplicity of composition. By reducing everything to its simplest form, the distractions are removed; there is nothing to see except ‘the one Thing.’ One is simply left with the clarity of an emotional feeling, and an admiration for the artist having expressed it so succinctly.
@nvrumi
@nvrumi Ай бұрын
I agree on the cypress swamp. The photographer did a nice job of using a ND filter to stretch the exposure time and produce the traces. That was an excellent decision. It also was good there was not much wind so everything stayed sharp. I also agree on your nice expression of the simplicity of the images.

Great video! In general I don’t like competions, except when it comes to sports. When it comes to art I find it so complex I lose track of what I see as important. Photography is so many things, so is art. Only because I don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not art. What I notice whilst watching the video was that I was looking for light,shadows, contrast, texture and emotions. I’m going to take a closer look at the pictures and see if there is a favourite.

7:08 "What is this?" you ask. To me this seems like a piece of forest being flooded where the grass undergrowth waves in the stream of water. This requires some longer exposure in order to get the motion blur in the grasses. But the branches of the tree above that are tack sharp. So this could be a blend of two photographs where the sharp top (short exposure) got combined with the motion blur in the water. The motion blur is minimised as opposed to the thirteen-in-a-dozen shots we see in the interwebs of waterfalls with completely white regions of presumably moving water. Great idea. Great execution. In this shot here.

2:58 This is a beautiful stilled image indeed. Powerful. Not sure that it is "architecture" - not, it is not "of" but yes it is "about". Who did this play with dark and light that makes me think of Fan Ho, before the latter did? And let's stay in the period after the invention of photography in answering that.

A lot of these images are minimalist or nearly so. The architecture images have few examples if the subject being the backdrop so to speak, with a good dose of "chiaroscuro" lighting applied. All of the images have very clean and rectilinear composition. Almost a cleaner "Bauhaus" look.

I’m of a similar mind to some of the other commenters; those pictures don’t look like photos but more like they’re paintings or something like that. I’m not sure how I feel about that because it’s artistic and well done with a lot of skill involved, yet not really what I would expect from photography. Seeing these sample images, for instance, I wouldn’t consider hiring them as a wedding photographer. However, I could see them selling well to people who want to put those pictures on a wall

This is why I never win any competition, I just don't have that artsy 'vision'. But that's OK, I don't need to be good at this, world somehow looks better when I'm looking at it thru viewfinder and that's all that matters to me.

Please explain to me, how hasselblads official voting page, does NOT show the names of the photographers, how the official hasselblad youtube channel, shows the finalists without crediting the names of the photographers and you too, showing pix worldwide without ever disclosing copyright/names etc. i just stumbled upon this because i was making a podt on facebook and also posted a screenshot of a photo and someone pointed out to me that i can not post photos without copyright and without posting names of the photographers or the people in them. So then i tried researching who to give credit to but turn out there are no names published anywhere with these finalists. How is that even possible? Ty

I reacted in haste to Alex's brief overview. I went to the linked Hasselblad site and looked at some of the photos. There are too many to take in but a few in a short time. Reading the artist's statements gives some insight into what they are doing, and why, allowing a deeper appreciation. Viewing photograph is an interaction between the photo and the viewer. Each viewer brings different experiences and expectations, so the interaction will be different for each viewer. I learned photography growing up in California during the 50's when the f/64, straight, west coast school dominated. This was largely a reaction against pictorialism, which was the use of photographic media to make "Art", rejecting the excellence of the straight photograph. It is ironic that Ansel Adams worked to make photography accepted as art. I can go to an exhibit of 400 Ansel Adams prints and go back to only a few for a second look. Much of what I am seeing today is a return to the pictorialist aesthetic, to produce "Art" using photographic media. The art community hypes art, making it seem much more important than it really is. It is important to them because that is how they make their living. The majority of artists are amateurs. They do it because they enjoy the act of creation. Think of all the school, college and community center art classes. Art is often promoted as a form of therapy. Most art is used as wall decoration. Much of it is cheap poster art. We must ask ourselves "Why do I look at photographs?" We must look within ourselves for the answer. This takes us back to Alex's opening question.

I think the photos are all excellent, but at the same time seem to carry the same aesthetic.

I must be out of touch with contempory photography. While the images shown are interesting, I much prefer modern pictorialism. Photographers of the past and their work appeal to me more than what I see presented in the video. Here are a few examples: Elias Goldensky - Portrait of Three Women, Alfred Stieglitz - Night Reflections, Hal Morey - Grand Central Terminal, and Léonard Misonne - Sale Vemps.

Hasselblad abandoned their pro customer base when they discontinued the H6D. The turd that’s is their mirrorless offer is a joke compared to the rest of the mirrorless market! NASA isn’t taking an X2D on the next mission they are taking a Nikon. Screw Hasselblad! Don’t spend Hasselblad money on a camera company that caters to the wealthy soccer mom community. Yes I ditched the H6D whenI couldn’t even order a new battery. Never again!

I like the photos at 2:30, 4:20, 6:33, and 8:15. For me, most of the photos you showed look completely fake. Maybe it's because I don't like nor understand why people like contemporary and geographic styles. My thoughts when I look at most of these is that they're too processed. Idk if that's on purpose for some or not. I don't feel any kind of emotion when I look at most of them. That's my number one criteria for judging whether or not I like a photo.
@jpdj2715
@jpdj2715 Ай бұрын
Alex, you repeatedly reference what judges would think, feel, judge in the case of these photos. I have to take you on your words, literally, here. In photography as art "we" shoot for ourselves. We learn from others as a way to see what already was done before us, or to make a new blend of old concepts. And this way stay away from plagiarism or covetous coquetry. That's the "why" essence of your own teachings in these tubes - I thought :)

Sorry for saying this. But I don't like the curators at Hasselblad. They have made a terrible choice. Too perfect, dead and locking almost like AI. Not my kind of photography. I have been selling prints and stock photo for 30 years now and have been able to live on my own work. I have seen a lot of art and photography. I like nearly every vlogg you do, so this tock me by surprise.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. There are some images in that shortlist which I don’t really care for, but there are some that appeal to me. If you look through the comments under this video, you’ll find that many people agree with you but also many people really like the photographs Of course it’s just one competition out of many and each has their own different type of aesthetic and look and feel
