Just made your "Reversible Wide Brim Hat" and it is perfect in every way. Fits adult woman perfectly. Your instructions make it easier to assembly than most bucket hat patterns. Couldn't be happier....another one on the cutting table. Thank you so very much for the excellent video and downloadable pattern.

It was going great, and then the outside top was a little short. I took your advice and bought the magnet guide, but it didn't come until this afternoon. I never get my seams straight, so now maybe I can. And I measured my head, so I made the medium, but I think I could've used the small. It was a learning process and it's a great pattern with a great teacher.
@madcaphats
@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
Well!! This one is a bit of a journey. The top with it's six seams is not always completely co-operative! If you find the hat a bit big on the medium size, you could adjust the seams on the brim to make the brim a bit smaller thus fitting the top that is smaller. It is a bit of a hassle but let's say that I have done that lots in my career when one piece turns out mismatched to the other but a slight adjustment on one will help. Bit of a pain with the seam ripper. Thanks so much for sharing and I hope the magnet helps you like it helps me!! Thanks for your kind words but you are putting in the effort to deserve all the credit for what I hope ends up to be your new favorite hat!! Tori xo

Your hats are beautiful, please, tell me, how long a cord do you start with, and thank you. I was confused about that. I see you use 3/8 inch seams. Your video is very clear, and I am in awe.
@madcaphats
@madcaphats 2 ай бұрын
Hi Carolyn ... my cord length is bit longer than needed but once I finish the hat I trim to what I feel is the right length for either under the chin or tightening at the back. Better to be safe than sorry. There are shoes laces you can use as well, so look for length around 1 metre. If you are cutting cord, I cut a long piece about a meter as well and then cut in half once I add the toggle. Hope that helps. And thanks for the lovely comment! Cheers, Tori

Hello, I just purchased this pattern as well as the Sunblocker pattern. I am wondering if in future, you could actually show how you use your Serger to finish off the raw edges? I am new to "serging" and having some challenges getting things to line up properly. Since you are such a great demonstrator.... it might be nice. Thanks for all the helpful videos. Madcapper Lady.

Thanks so much for the video and pattern!! Trying this one out now. Question on sewing the Brim- Why do you not close the center back seam BEFORE sewing the pieces together? (min 4:28). I want to top stitch the seam allowances down as you do with most all of your seams and think it would be easier to do before sewing the brim edge TIA
@madcaphats
@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
Barb, I just try to keep the two pieces about the same size when i close them up. Doing it the way I do means one side of the brim has not stretched a bit while sewing and they will match up perfectly, the same diameter. If one is out of wack a bit, you can adjust with that back seam on that out of wack side so the seam that is your brim edge is perfect, all the way around! Do it the best way for you however, make your own path! Tori

Thank you for this excellent tutorial and pattern. I did notice that you don't backstitch at the beg and end of the seam. Is there a technical reason? tyvm
@madcaphats
@madcaphats 6 ай бұрын
I prefer to over sew the starting point when I get back to there which to me seems to remove the tension on a single start or end point but doubling the load for about 2 cm or about an inch. You can do backstitch if you prefer that method.

What are the differences between this reversible wide brim hat and your big, beautiful beach sun hat, aside from this one being reversible. They look quite similar, but I know there are differences, and perhaps some that are too subtle for me to discern with my limited experience. I'm trying to decide which hats to make next! 🙂

Hi, I'm new. I opted for the free pattern. I wasn't sure about the weight of the stabilizer and got a 2 sided fusible piece of pellon 72F. I'm thinking its too thick to use 3 layers of interfacing so I'm experimenting with just using the fusible thick piece. My plan is to trim the interfacing before bonding so the seam allowance is just the fabric. What do you think? Also, did you notch the outer edge seam of the brim before you serged it? Thanks for your help, your instructions are clear, but I'm always experimenting!!!
@madcaphats
@madcaphats Ай бұрын
Hi Patty ... did you finish a hat? I use medium weight one side fusible and I use the two sided when I do a hat like the sunblocker where I would add a trim to the edge. Hope your's worked out! Cheers, Tori
@PattyDelaney-gj8nc
@PattyDelaney-gj8nc Ай бұрын
@@madcaphats I have made 3 hats. The free pattern is big on me. I chose a decor type fabric for both sides and found it very difficult to “ease” the top pieces without a lot of ripping & cursing. The 2nd hat I didn’t use the additional stiffener and it was fine with the decor fabric. The shape of the top was what I would call “puffy”. Perhaps because it was too big. I’m not complaining, just reporting. I like your construction and will sample more hats.

Tori what type of fabric are you using in this video? I read in the instructions you used cotton twill and denim. What do you recommend for all around. I've been using cotton canvas and it wrinkles to much. I finely got the pattern down but material I chose isn't friendly. Thankyou for all your help..
@madcaphats
@madcaphats 2 ай бұрын
Hi Cynthia ... you want to wash your cotton canvas first and maybe more than once if it wrinkles easy. The tighter the weave the less problem I have with wrinkling ... you can even use twill on the reverse side which looks very much like canvas. Try to stay in the 8 oz range for one side and if you using quilting weight for the other, the brim piece will need some extra stabilization like an iron med weight fuse non woven. That is a big brim so it needs the extra weight for support so it will turn up and stay in shape after washing. Def. wash your fabric first so you are not disappointed with distortion from shrinkage. Cheers, Tori

Is there a way to add an elastic sweat band to the inside of the cap at the brim seam? Would you make a fabric /elastic/fabric sandwich and sew it into the seam or just attach the elastic (the plush kind, not waistband elastic) when you topstitch the seam closed?
@madcaphats
@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
Hi Vicki ... watch our new video about the Summer Bucket Hat ... if you make one side from lighter fabric, run a narrow piece of elastic across about 10 inches of the back of the hat. I would use a piece of 1/8" wide or 3mm wide and 7 " or 18 cm stretch across ... make a mark on the wrong side for start and finish, sew the elastic on the wrong side, and then do the closing like the video for this hat. The Summer Bucket Hat is here ... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jc6ba9Srm9bSlaM.html
