i got introduced to them at a gig in amsterdam and he made an effort to say some dutch stuff as well, i like tortimandi, engin miskun and most of all klamstrakur, it`s my new word for people like it, hate to hate or acknowledge the hate, so to be hatari or a hatarar or however that works, i like the vocals a lot, especially because for matthias a vocal with distortion is hard to master without it going eeeeeep or something, i enjoyed my ass off at their gig and now i am a fan, so don`t hate this at least, it is good.

Absolutely fascinating. This is like a proto-Hatari, an rough and unpolished version of the band we know and love nowadays. The voices are definitely there, the outfits are kinda there too, but the scenic personae are completely absent. Their body language is notably different, with Matthias moving much more than nowadays and Klemens being definitely more... static, shall we say. They've come an awfully long way since then, ramping up the symbolism and eroticism of their performances and developing those wildly contrasting personae. They were a diamond in the rough back then, and they've now grown into a full package of artistry and brilliance. ❤️ #TeamHatari

I love it.. it's a bit like looking at a baby picture..lol It's baby Hatari. It's weird seeing Matthias with long hair. Even as someone who likes long hair on a guy, I'm glad he cut it off. It's cool to get this glimpse at where they started and see how far they've come in a relatively short time. I forget that they haven't actually been together all that long. I'm also kind of wondering when the BDSM angle came into this. It doesn't really seem to have been as much a part of their deal earlier on.

@@slitherzither From what I've reckoned, they started incorporating the BDSM aesthetics into their act at some point in 2017, when they turned their satirical eye towards capitalism. BDSM gear was supposed to symbolize our part-willing, part-unconscious submission to consumerism, and the blend of pleasure and pain we derive from it on a daily basis. And of course, there was probably also an intent to generate shock value and titillation at work there; we shall not insult these guys' intelligence, nor ours, by pretending that they don't know the disturbing and erotic potential of such getups. But that's precisely what I love about them: they go for the crotch and the brain at the same time, targeting both our eyes and ears; and that's what makes them so utterly captivating and riveting. I'm sure they wouldn't have half the impact they have if they were just a slutty BDSM band with no satirical charge, or a piss-take band dressed in jeans and t-shirts. Heck, I'm sure they wouldn't be where they are today if they had maintained the appearance and body language they display in this video. 😁

@@isey4482 Well, that image counts for something is a certainty. And, yes, if they came to Eurovision like this, they wouldn't have gotten even half of the new global fans' support. And we wouldn't be seeing 49% comments by drooling gay dudes, which is obviously a big chunk of the Eurovision fanbase. As well as 49% other Eurovision fans. But as a straight guy, I can say that their image does nothing for me sexually, former or present, but I still like their demeanor. I like the contrasts in what they show. Though you could already clearly hear that in the music as well, which is what matters most. Their visual appearance is just an extension of that, and fits in on multiple levels with the satirical nature of the band. Possibly with how they're being consumed more for their image now as well. Sex sells, of course. But it's gotten them a bunch of new fans also. I like how they're unafraid to pervert their image for the sake of the music and drive that home even more than they already were. Oftentimes with bands that Hatari gets, in my opinion, wrongfully compared to, it's more that the image is more important than the actual content of the music, which is a big part of why I never was able to enjoy the music they get compared to. If Hatari had never changed their aesthetic, the music would still be awesome. Ódýr was/is awesome and they made that long before they changed their look. Of course, all hypothetical, 'cause the only thing to say is that they were destined for this because they are doing this. Hatari is Hatari. Though, when Klemens wasn't holding his guitar, he was already dancing in a similar fashion. Matthías remains largely unchanged, except for the oufits he wears now. Klemens started to invest more in his dancing performance, and they have people dancing with them on stage now, along with the BDSM outfits. I wouldn't say it's such a huge jump. It's just that it's really appealing to Eurovision fans. They already won best live band in Iceland at the start of 2017, when they didn't have their current aesthetic at all. The massive influx of new fans doesn't change the quality of the music or measures their actual success. Not to me anyway, and I've been following them since late 2016, when they barely had any listeners outside (or inside) of Iceland, except for the ones that visited the festivals or gigs they played at. They were already a huge success to me back then, and that hasn't changed.

@@clam_boy Yum, a meaty comment. I love meaty comments. And well, I wholeheartedly agree with everything you wrote. "I like how they're unafraid to pervert their image for the sake of the music and drive that home even more than they already were": I like that too. I respect and admire their fearlessness, their apparent absence of concern about the possible consequences of their artistic choices on their careers or private lives. And oh boy, is it easier said than done to be that bold and unafraid in a teeny-tiny country such as Iceland. Lord knows I would never, ever dare to contact the Icelandic BDSM association and kindly ask them to lend a hand in putting together a music video, let alone feature myself in said music video all decked up in leathers; but Hatari did it without batting an eyelid, and I give them huge props for that. (And also my thanks for allowing me to indulge vicariously in those BDSM antics.) They inspire me to show the same amount of courage and boldness, to be fierce and spirited in my choices. Granted, I won't be dancing wildly or donning kinky outfits any time soon; but I have my fingers in other pies, and Hatari encourage me to bury them deeper in said pies and wiggle them unafraid. Having said that, I'm highly curious to see how they will evolve from now on. Will they succumb to the lure of European fame and fortune, like the Sugarcubes back in the days? Or will they disband after the ultimate selling-out point that is Eurovision, having completed their satirical journey through commodification? I cannot see them pulling off the Hatari act for much longer, if only because of increasing age and family responsabilities; but who knows. Until then, I'll go and check on them live at least once.

@@clam_boy Hatari being more a performance art project than a band per se, I developed the theory that their "according to plan" drill does contain a kernel of truth, and that they do have a couple of milestones they want to achieve in terms of satire before they stop operating as Hatari. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they already had a grand finale planned, along with several satirical stunts along the way. But we'll see; and boy, am I eager indeed to see what they have in store for us. I'm totally and utterly convinced that their disbanding announcement was never genuine to begin with, not for a single second. The deadline for submitting entries for the Icelandic ESC preselections predates said disbanding announcement by a good two months; so they knew perfectly what might be in store for them at the time. The way I see it, that disbanding announcement and the collateral release of the Spillingardans video was a complete satire of the publicity stunts that are part and parcel of the music industry. Basically, they pulled a Miley Cyrus on us, releasing that super-raunchy video while at the same time playing it all coy in suits and jerseys during their (completely fake) IMN interview. The whole thing was a major satirical coup, a masterpiece of deadpan humour. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Spillingardans was more genuinely and disturbingly erotic that anything Miley Cyrus, or any other slutty songstress for that matter, ever released. You mentioned how "they’re pretty much invulnerable to criticism if they keep on playing their cards right": that's something I've noticed too, and have been enjoying tremendously. I lap up their caustic self-derisiveness, their complete awareness of the fact that they cannot extract themselves from the very things they're mocking - perfectly embodied by their 2017 Iceland Airwaves promo segment, in which they branded themselves as "hypocrites" in the most deliciously tongue-in-cheek way. As the French would say, they're both judges and defendants; that's a tricky position to be in, and one that could easily be their downfall if they took themselves just a mite too seriously. But, as the French say as well, a confessed sin is half-forgiven already; by acknowledging the inherent paradoxes of their work and staying firmly on the satirical side of things, they protect themselves and deflect any possible criticism. I'll make a confession: I already have my ticket for their post-ESC tour in Iceland. I'll try to release my inner tramp the way Klemens always does on stage, and indulge in a bit of wild dancing. :P
