My chow was a very obedient dog, I didn't need a leash with her. But we started training from her 4 months individually with a coach who worked for police and in a group for socialising. She was very stubborn indeed but thanks to the help of great trainers she became a very great dog, I miss her a lot. If you don't have much time or if you are not planning to hire a serious coach, think twice.

I have been rescuing Chow Chow's for 35 years and anyone that says that can't be trained has no clue what they are talking about. They blow me away time after time by learning themselves. They actually have more manners than most humans do. The sad story about you can't have them around children is sad because mine let little boys then never met walk up and grab their ears and did nothing but lick their hand like they knew each other their whole lives. Most people that say these things have never had the privilege of sharing their lives with a Chow because they will never be so blessed

I was on a rescue squad for ~15 years and worked full time in an ER for a few years and I had tons of dog bites. Not a single one was a pit bull, and maybe 1 or 2 Chow bites. People act like they cannot afford to have a dog boarded and trained, but compared to the stress and cost of everything an untrained dog may chew up, the board and train programs are well worth the money.

@@lisalindberg4836 My wife had a Chow mix when we met who lived to be 1 week shy of 16 years old. Besides barking at the door, she was pretty docile and sweet. It was a dog from her first marriage and the dog was bonded to her husband, not her. Until her husband started acting like a royal jerk and when push came to shove, the dog sided with my wife to protect her against her husband. Nothing happened, but that dog was bonded to her from the rest of her life. They owned the mother and raised the pups, and here is the really odd thing. Her dog was about 40-45 pounds maybe? Another dog from the same litter was over 110 pounds. My wife's dad was a mechanic, and that big dog stayed at the shop and roamed free inside the fenced in lot protecting customers vehicles from anybody doing anything bad. Nobody every touched a car under his watch LOL.

@@lisalindberg4836 That was kind of my wife's dog's siblings nature. If someone came across as any kind of threat, he would just stare at them menacingly. He bit a few people that were not welcomed in the yard. The dog would never go after the person's arm or throat. He would wait for them to walk past, then clamp down at the very top of their hamstring. Long before I met my wife, my wife's mom was home and her husband was deployed, and someone came by trying to do something that the husband would have not appreciated. The guy wasn't happy with her answer and got mad and animated, but walked away, and received a bite to his upper hamstring for his efforts. You'll love this. At one time they had a Doberman and its name was "Satan". I don't recall why right now, but when Satan was a few years old, someone brought a stray kitten by and Satan fell in love and protected and nurtured this kitten and they became the best of friends. So they named the cat "Pitchfork" for Satan and Pitchfork. They were religious people (they passed some time back), so I'm not really sure why they chose the name Satan.

Mine was estimated 5 in the shelter, in 2017. Broken and angry. He's a sweetie, enjoys people but sometimes draws a line. I step in to be his advocate and he appreciates that. He goes to the dog park, not an issue. I have another dog (Chow mix) and even a cat. He's fine with them. He enjoys friends, comes to house parties with me. He does not run away. But he is wary of strangers. He will not put up with idiots. Will not put up with aggressive people. Independent, yes but no. He's not in my face all the time, but he's no more than 3 yards away. If I leave the area, he gets up and follows. This with multi broken bones/osteoarthritis. And he really relishes my praise, so he does like to do what makes me happy. Me, though, not just anyone. He's MY dog, 100% by choice. They need a confident and firm owner... never cruel, never scared and wimpy. Yes, I had previous experience with Chow Chows but he's the first of *my own* Chows. And yeah, so my first very-own is a 70 lb "F dog" that the shelter said was too dangerous to open the cage 😢😂 If they hate you, you're toast. If they love you, your attacker is toast.

I had a chow growing up and also two poodles, but man the chow was the trouble maker for sure, would dig wholes to go under the fence and get out, bit my nieces like twice, would literally maul my other poodles till they almost died, I loved her but she was literally a hunting dog, we had tall grass in our backyard, and she’d creep up on birds like a lion hunting a a deer and she’d catch every bird she jumped for, super athletic dawg… my dad unfortunately had to take her to a store like 20 miles from my house and we just let her go😢 that broke my heart be she had come constantly been finding her way to the neighbors yard and they had three little girls living there so my dad thought it was better to just let her go before the dog really gutted one of the kids.

I feel so bad. When I was 12yrs old I begged my parents for my own dog. As a child there were other dog's as I was growing up. We had a family dog that had passed and another dog that left with my older brother when he moved out but I never had my own. So they surprised me and took my to a family friend's house that just had a litter of chow chows and told me I could pick one and in another week or 2 he could come home with me. Well this pup took to my father like no other and wanted nothing to do with me or really anyone. He was good around my mother and with my brother when he visited and if my father was there he would accept pretty much whoever my father allowed in. But if my father wasn't there this dog was Alpha and at the time I knew no better and neither did my parents back then. They would only say that I needed to spend more time with the dog. He was all black with super dark eyes and had like a purplish tongue and when I would have friend's spend the night it would be a nightmare. As soon as I would start to turn my doorknob we could hear him growling but couldn't see him. So if we had to use the bathroom I would have to scream for my father to come ger the dog so we could come out of my bedroom. My dad's buddy that the dog use to lay between him and my father many nights while they were having some drinks and choping it up. So dog knew the man really well but one day he tried entering our yard and my father wasn't home and Harley was on this guy as soon as he took first step in. Thank God my brother was there and Harley respected my brother and he was able to get him off. The guy went to hospital and had to get stitches and hospital reported the bite. Then pretty much the same situation happened with another one of my dad's buddies but this one the dog didn't know very well but did know him. So this was 2nd bite and 2nd time he sent someone to hospital for stitches. Now the dog catcher told my father if he were 2 bite another person he would have to be put down. It was a beautiful summer day and me and my best friend that was at our house more then anyone that didn't live there so Harley new him but that dog only wanted my father and I don't think he liked us 2 much bc we were loud kids and Harley was his happiest laying at my father's feet. So we were spending the day in the pool and when my father was home Harley knew he made the call on who was allowed there so he would basically find some shade and lay and just watch and we were in and out of the pool all day with no problems till my buddy got out to use the bathroom and then came out the house eating a hotdogs and asked me if he could give Harley the last bite and he knew the dog and about the bites. So when he asked me I figured he would throw it to him but he tried to feed it to him and something set Harley off to were he had my buddies hand in his mouth and trying to shake him to the ground. So between my buddy screaming in fear and me screaming for my father to help my father got him off him super fast but who knows what would have happened if he wasn't there. And he also had to go to the hospital and that day the dog catcher was at our home to take Harley and wasn't having such a hard time that my father had to pick him up and put him in the truck and even though he felt horrible about everyone Harley bit he still loved that dog like his child and my dad was that manly mand would never show emotions. I could see the hurt in his eyes and I felt horrible for him but at the same time I'm now scared to death of the dog because I was there to witness the attack on my friend. This story is from 30+ yrs ago and back then I didn't know anything about dog training and my father grew up on a farm and he could get any animal to listen to him and the way he was raised he wouldn't even probably have considered sending a animal to someone else to be trained. I feel horrible for those that were bitten..I felt bad that my pop lost his best friend and I feel bad for Harley bc as a family in a whole we didn't put in the time and effort to assure him a good life and he lost his life and in his mind probably only thought he was protected number 1 (my father) and number 2 (his home) and since Harley I promised myself I would never do that to another animal and I have had some amazing dogs. I have had many pitbulls, a American bully and a cane corso that right from a young puppy were socialized and were incredible companions and since Harley I only had 1 dog that needed to be leashed and she was a rescued pit that had parvo and lost her hearing and loved to play that game of running when I would get close. She was a awesome dog and such a lover of people and other animals but you give her a chance she is going to check out the neighborhood. But all my other dog's very rarely were on a leash and were right next to me and were always paying attention to me. Unfortunately never had a dog professionally trained and even though they were really good and lived good happy lives..they were never as obedient as a dog you have trained. And I think in the future that any dog I decide to get that they go through the hands of the professionals bc not only will the dog learn but so will I and I feel that is the only way to 110% assure that we are giving the dog the absolute best life.

I've never seen a pitbull who love people, they are very animal aggressive. They are the worse guard dogs known to man. They are the only dog breed I get now because of their love for people. You must socialize all pets at an early age to be and they should be ok.

There's only one thing no one has to train a chow to do, bite. Most show no signs of aggression they just come right up and get to business. I was surprised you mentioned him growling because everyone I've seen gave absolutely no signs besides moving at a faster pace. By the age of 14 I knew about 4 people with tooth holes and scars from chows to this day I don't know any with bites from pitbulls.

I’m so sorry to read this. Your chow was just a typical chow. This breed is a one person dog, who usually don’t take well to children, and absolutely not to strangers. Being a chow owner myself with children, I always monitor him and the kids when they interact together. He’s my dog, he likes my husband and the kids, but I’m his human. He likes our oldest daughter of 13 more, since she’s calmer, but also loves to play with the younger who is 10. He’s almost 2 and though we got him as a pup, and for a chow he’s very social, I would never leave him and friends of my children unattended. If I’m not home, and they have friends coming over then he has to be in his crate, and if I’m home and they interact with him I’m watching his body language. I have trained with him quite a lot and he does listen quite well for a chow (and here in Europe prong and ecollars are strictly forbidden by law), he’s always on a leash whilst on a walk. Unfortunately, he’s not dog friendly, so the children can’t walk him. We love him immensely, and he is my best friend, so I feel your fathers pain, but I also understand his decision. Owning a large, intact, chow male comes with responsibilities that I never take lightly.

If you are their “person”, that dog will do anything for you. I’d give anything for five more minutes with my girl. She was the best. I miss her derpy map of the world tongue, her chocolaty eyes, her obsessive toe kisses. She was so much my best friend.

I know that they have their admirers, but chows are among those breeds that I would Never own. Many reasons, but the bottom line is that, as a 63 year old woman with bad knees, no young fast man could ran fast enough to give me the world's most expensive chow for free. Hard pass. But, to those that like them, happy grooming, LOTS of happy training and for those who insist on keeping them in Southern states, please clip and AC those poor animals
