Hatshepsut was a powerful female pharaoh of Ancient Egypt who used effective propaganda to ensure a long and prosperous rule. She ruled 18th dynasty Egypt from c. 1479 - 1458 BCE.

So what did Hatshepsut really look like?
Reviving the faces of ancient Egypt is difficult - Egyptian art served a very different purpose than it does today. While rulers 500 years ago depicted themselves fairly faithfully, to preserve their image for future generations, Egyptian art was not meant to truly represent the figure at all, but rather the power and idea behind the ruler.
These ancient Egyptian portraits also depict their subjects in the prime of their life - thin, and youthful, even working from a grid system that would result in each subject looking mostly the same. Some rulers would even rework statues, just borrowing them from their predecessors and slapping on a new name. These idealized statues represented perfection, so any individualistic features were thought to ruin that perfection.
Knowing all this, is it possible to get close to what Hatshepsut really looked like? We do have a few clues.
Although it’s disputed, researchers believe they have found the mummy of Hatshepsut. I won’t be able to show it here because of community guidelines, but images can easily be found online. Based on the dimensions of her sarcophagus, she was about 5 feet tall, and died around the age of 50. By the time she died, she was heavy and balding, suffering from diabetes and bone cancer, probably because of a carcinogenic skin cream she had been using.
In terms of actual facial features, we have dozens of statues of Hatshepsut, all looking really consistent. I actually superimposed her mummy with the statue images, and the proportions surprisingly matched up. But the statues are missing some depth, and distinctive features - so I’ve added some from her relatives - the mummies of her Half brother/husband, and father show prominent cheekbones and deep set eyes, with the same wide mouth as Hatshepsut.
I’m going to depict Hatshepsut in her prime, just as the ancient Egyptians did in these images. And while we may not be able to get to her true face, we do know what she would have worn. Egyptian women often wore plain sheath dresses made of undyed linen. Of course, the wealthy would have more ornamentation, wearing large collar necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
Kohl was used to elaborately line the eyes and eyebrows, and red ochre was used as blush and lipstick.
My favorite thing about creating Hatshepsut was her amazing wig. Egyptians would wear elaborate wigs, made from real human hair. Many elite women would shave their heads entirely and wear wigs for almost all occasions. These were arranged into elaborate twists or braids, and ornamented with gold. During Hatshepsut’s reign, a thick, shoulder length wig that was stiffened with beeswax was very popular. Even as she aged and lost some of her hair, this loss wouldn’t have been noticeable to the people around her, because she would have always been wearing a wig.

Egyptians, specially ancient Egyptians, are not and were not that dark. As an Egyptian myself, it is so jarring to me to see Caucasian features on burnt brown skin. Egypt's character, civilization, history, language & DNA are connected to the Mediterranean & Levent, not Africa. Ancient Egyptians' DNA does not include any Sub-Saharan African DNA. If you know Hatshepsut's temple, you'll see the clear distinction between Egyptians & their African prisoners of war. Egyptians' skin is like that of the Italians, Greeks, & Turks; not black, not African.

Well said! All the Afrocentrics (black Americans and Brits) who lay claim to Egyptian cultural heritage and history under the guise of being African aka black (Bantu), claiming you’re not real Egyptians but Arab, Turk, Persian, Greek, and Italian due to invasions and colonization. And that the “real Egyptians who they claim where black” was killed due to genocide🤣🤣🤣

Very nice recreation! 💖 One correction - her husband might rule 13 years... or only 3. Egyptologists argue about that, but left almost nothing and all his children were infants or toddlers at time his passing, so it seems short 3-year reign is more probable. That would mean Hatshepsut could be younger than 50. If she was born after her father became Pharaoh and if her husband ruled only 3 years, Hatshepsut would be less than 40 (11-13 years of her father + 3 years of her husband + 22 years of her = 36/38 years).

The tale about the Great Snake and the mariners who happened to be on his island. Also, i like to think that she had lover (favorite) and it was young and very talented architect (who built all these temples). There are a portrait of them with her daughter. I think it's the first time I go through a whole documentary. Usually I would skip some parts or only reach the half of it. This one was really interesting since I didn't know about her. Thanks 😊

Wow!! I think you’ve nailed how she kind of really looked like!!! Like another person commented, the tone of her skin looks to me like modern Egyptians ( I’ve never been there though it’s in my bucket list) and the rest of her face is awesome!!!! Great job! Thanks!!!👍😻😻😻😻🐾

Actually, for most if not all 18th Dynasty Pharaohs, how they are depicted in contemporary art highly correlates with their physical features. Most art of Akhenaton is the exception. Hatshepsut and TIII are in a league of their own. They demanded it.

At 15:04.., the comment made the statutes and her mummy surprisingly match up. No surprise. My earlier point. Hatshepsut and TIII were very particular. One of their character traits.

This is truly remarkable. Rarely have I seen a recreation that seems so true to life, or true to a living person. Don’t know exactly how to express this, but it is very human, and yet I can picture a person exercising great power.
