★ NO MORE OUTFIT BOREDOM WITH THE STYLE SHIFTER GAME: tinyurl.com/ym...
We’ve all felt Wardrobe Boredom at some point in time. Do shopping hauls help? How about thrifting? Maybe buying a new pair of shoes?
In this video, I will show you why these popular style boredom solutions don’t work and how I’ve found out what works long term.
How do you fight Wardrobe Boredom?

wonder-wardrob...
So you wake up in the morning and you open your closet. The same old boring mess, right? No fun items to wear. Is it time to do a haul? Instead of being inspired, we go with that safe option that made us feel secure the last time. But what are people going to think if you wear the same outfit or article of clothing? Should you take a risk and wear something else? Maybe it’s time to do a haul, just in case.
These are all thoughts that go through our heads whenever we are in front of our wardrobes. I had these thoughts as well and I can tell you that all of my clients had them in a form or another. At some point, I thought maybe the issue is with our age.
Maybe the older we get, the more secure we feel, the more we enjoy the clothes in our wardrobes. I have clients from different social backgrounds, different countries, and of course different ages.
Trust me when I tell you that we have all faced the same problem: wardrobe boredom is widespread. So how did we get here?
Where does the urge to do a shopping haul come from?
When we feel the urge to do a haul, shop, or change up our fashion style, it’s a sign that something is bothering us. There’s an issue we seek to escape from: it’s either anxiety or boredom. We could implement many tricks to delay the next purchase. But until we realize what’s going on emotionally - what we are actually trying to cover up with another haul or even video haul, we will keep thinking about what to buy to make ourselves happier. This happens even if you are a minimalist. Some trends will get your attention at some point. Or you will randomly buy an article of clothing.
Unfortunately, that little dopamine you get from a new purchase won’t last long enough and you’ll be back to square one.
There is a lot of advice out there on how to deal with wardrobe boredom. And I’ll tell you in a bit why I don’t agree with any of them. Especially with doing a shopping haul. You might have even tried some of these and figured out by yourself why they don’t work.
One of the most common pieces of advice is to check Instagram influencers or blogs for style ideas. See their post and try to copy that.
Or another solution might be thrifting. It’s not that expensive after all and there’s no guilt involved if whatever you buy gets worn just a few times or it doesn’t even fit with what you already have in your closet.
New shoes seem to be another popular solution to wardrobe boredom. Shoes can scale up your outfit and make it feel fresh for a while.
Another very popular solution has nothing to do with clothes. It’s make-up! Experimenting with different lipstick shades or a completely new look is another easy way out of the pesky boredom rut you find yourself in.
If make-up is not your thing, you could maybe go for new accessories. Cheap jewelry can be found everywhere nowadays and if you get the right color and style, your outfits will have that fresh pop again.
Unfortunately, I have to tell you that none of these will work. Wardrobe boredom will be back very soon. And now, with some of this badly placed style advice, your closet will look even more confusing.
I gave this widespread problem a lot of my time and I’ve researched it properly, so you don’t have to. And this is what I’ve found out. It comes down to one important question:
How come what we have is never enough?
The fashion industry is full of smart people that make a lot of money convincing you and me that we need new clothes all the time.
Globally, 73% of women update at least 25% of their wardrobe every three months.
This artificially created need to be on-trend, or to keep buying can be correctly identified if you ask yourself a few simple questions:
Does shopping feed a fantasy you have about yourself?
Or maybe about how life is going to change once you buy that tempting item? If you answered yes, here’s what you can do about it. Try to recognize and appreciate who you are, what you have already accomplished, what you have right now, in real life. Practice gratitude. This will create a sense of well-being and it will make you less likely to subconsciously try to fill an emotional hole with more stuff.

I have to add something here. For many many years I used to go to the hairdresser with a photo (usually of an actress or singer etc) to show what kind of hairstyle I would like. I always left with a sense of disappointment. I got the hairstyle but it just didn't look as good on me as it did on the actress. After a few trials and errors one of the hairdressers told me that it will always look different since I have a lot less hair than that particular actress in the picture. (one of the issues) And I also realised I wanted to be as pretty as the actress and of course I felt disappointed because although my hair changed, well my face did not. I was always unsatisfied. I feel similarly with clothes. We often want to look like someone else and we feel that outfits can do that job but then we feel disappointed. So I think learning to love ourselves is one of the solutions here.

I have started to make my own clothes. Sewn, knitted, etc. Why? Because I was not ready to give up on the "kick of adrenaline" from having new pieces, but I wanted to make it last longer and be...deeper? So with handmade pieces, I get the fun while picking patterns. I get fun from picking the fabric and finishes. I get fun from preparing mood boards, planning alterations I will make, and so on. And then the process of making the piece takes much longer than one click. For me usually around 3-4 weeks. I like fashion, I like clothes as objects - I know, I will never be a minimalist. But crafting allowed me to still be engaged in the process of acquiring stuff in a less mindless way.

To avoid unsatisfactory purchases, I mapped out all my criteria based on my preferences and what I wanted out of my clothing, so that even if I bought things that I came across on a spur, it's because I have done my homework beforehand. Next is that all items in my wardrobe, whether they are bought or hand me downs, regularly or infrequently worn, need to have an utilisation plan. I am constantly looking out for opportunities to wear my dormant items and lessen the wear on my regular ones. So with all these mental activities ongoing, wardrobe boredom is never a problem for me lol.

Thank you for the tips! I found them all very helpful. Shopping when bored is certainly a problem I struggle with myself. Just one thing - is there a way to maybe turn your sound up when you're editing? Your videos are always so qiuet I have to crank up the volume, and then I forget about it and nearly go deaf when I put on something else after your videos

Very helpful as I realize I go into stores when I bored, missing family/friends, etc…. Maybe I’ll join a new book club, I realize I shopped less when I was engaged more readily.

Daria, you are amazingly sensible and practical! The question: why is what we have never good enough- makes me think: I basically have everything I need! Not only in terms of clothes, but with the people and things around me ❤️ I justneed to look at them in diff perspective, find ways to make them look good and fresh again.

I love the phone a friend idea, but if it happens to be an hour when your friend won’t appreciate a call, I find the advice of waiting very helpful. Save the link and/or a picture of what you’re interested in and wait a week or more to see if you truly need it. Often the answer is “no”.

Very clever and deep ideas here Daria! Muito obrigada! I specially liked that you didn't focus on clothes but on our approach to life. I stopped buying new clothes a few years ago thanks to you, so whenever I felt "the need" to buy, I went out thrifting. It was fun and seemed cheap at the beginning but it turned out to be a mistake! Most of the time, I ended up wearing the same thing because I didn't know what my style was. After following your videos, decluttering, reorganizing and a lot of ironing (very important indeed!), I think I'm starting to get it at 38 years old! By the way, beautiful video and beautiful surroundings (Gulbenkian!) Make one in Jardim da Estrela please! Keep on nailing it!

Overall great points. The only one I disagree is being against usimg your wardrobe to imitate outfits tou see in photos and media with the things you have in the closet. I think it brings creativity with no shopping.

I'm sewing most of my own wardrobe after a massive weight fluctuation, so boredom is a major risk, if I don't make my approach to self-expression very intentional. I have long hair, and I wear it in protective styles, so I often spice things up by going full Khaleesi and doing something more involved, for my hairstyle. I especially love recreating Classical Roman styles, because they use different techniques (sewn on, instead of bobby pins), so nobody else is doing anything like it. I prefer simple hair taping anyway, for my normal looks, so I already had the tatting needle. All I needed was a thin wool yarn that was close to my hair color, so I could do invisible stiches. But of course, it's perfectly possible to do all sorts of interesting styles that don't require *any* new equipment, whatever your normal is. It's kind of like the makeup idea, but instead of buying something new, you're showing love and care to what you already have, so it has a completely different impact.

Very sound advice re mindless shopping. Also please let me know about the multi coloured dress you wore in the park. Do you know if there is a pattern. I made the decision a few years ago to only make my all of my garments. That dress is so fun I really must make it. Thanks again you’re so enjoyable to watch and the sound of your voice is appealing.
